Mixed Feelings.

I just completed filing for my Social Security benefits. I'll be getting $1,195.00 per month and that will enable me to pay off everything I owe. Then I can start helping my estranged wife, my children and my grandchildren more. That's all good.

However, being eligible for Social Security is quite a wake-up call for me. I definitely don't feel almost 62, but my birth certificae says otherwise. So this is all very sobering. I can almost feel Father Time breathing down my neck!

For several years now, my fourteen-year-old mind has been writing checks my considerably older body has sometimes been unable to cash. That's how I wound up almost killing myself in a military parachuting accident, and why I recently broke my right leg in a mountain biking accident from which I am still in a cast.

Prior to my 40th birthday, I had never had a broken bone. There's a message there, one which I am reluctant in the extreme to hear! Although I really, really don't want to, I must slow down. Sigh!

I may just refuse! :D

Refuse man. If it gets harder, try harder. If you cut down it will be a slippery slope and before you know it you won't be active at all. Okay soyou won't be able to run marathons on a regular basis but you gotta keep active.
When does the cast come off now? You must have had it a month give or take

Poppy- you just need to exercise caution with physical activities as we ALL do when we get older. Its not that youre getting old, its that youre getting older.
I'm 30 and last weekend, I spent 7 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday, working on my yard. I carried bricks, dug holes, raked, all kinds of stuff. When I was 20....I could have done that same job in half the time I think and not felt like I had been run over by a train the next day. Everything ages, and thats not necessarily a bad thing. It just means we have to slow the road and lighten the load sometimes. You arent old...... :fluffle:

Oh, I have no intention of becoming inactive! I will always test the envelope, it's in my blood! But to avoid checking out too early, I may just not push quite as hard. :)

The cast should come off in a couple of weeks. I have another doctor's appointment tomorrow and should know more after it. The damned thing was on a full month last Tuesday. GROAN!

Awww! U so sweeeet! :fluffle:

When I was 30, I was still getting up at oh-dark-thirty so I could run my standard ten miles every other day. I was still doing that at 53, plus working out with weights and the exercise machines on alternate days. I was in the best shape of my entire life at the age of 53, something the doctors said saved my life in that parachuting accident. Staying in shape gets addictive. :)

well good luck man. When I had my cast off it was great. but still make sure its not over worked its really easy that it can get damaged again and believe me no one wants to go through that.

Good to hear it's comming off soon. You have the right idea. Stay active, this keeps you from aging too quickly, but don't push yourself to the point of injury. Remember, not everyone has the privelage of living into his sixties. Don't see it as a curse, but rather as a blessing. You're still around to enjoy life.

Tell me about it! I discovered that during my convalescence from the parachuting accident. They put about 2 lbs of metal in my leg to hold my femur together, using screws to attach it to the bone. I tried to get back into things too quickly and the heads of all the screws sheared off! Had to have the entire operation done over again. Groan.

Yep! And man, ( as they said back in the 60's ) I dig it! :D

When playing rugby with my buddies starts to break bones, I'm going to be very depressed to only be able to play every eight to ten weeks or so. :p

You know, in a way I have an idea of what you might be feeling like. I catch myself wishing I were a child again with childhood stresses and "problems" instead of having to pay rent, keep on top of bills, go to a job, etc.

I tell you one thing though, there's nothing like being on stage if you want to recapture your youth. :)

Yikes! That's one of the few things I've never been able to do, ice skate. It's good that you had little feeling in your knee at the time.

Pain is good. It lets you know you're still alive. But too much pain can ruin your entire day! Heh!

LOL. I can't skate anymore, I can't put enough weight on the leg, still play tennis, squash and mainly non contact sports these days

One of the strongest men I've ever met was 58. He told me when he was 52 he lost his job working on the roads and, not wanting to become a blob, started going to the gym. He wasn't that tall, nor was he very muscly looking. Stocky, yes, but not overly so.
I helped spot him when he benched 200kg. He repped out at 180kg.
Which shows you that age really doesn't matter.
I always think if I can do half that when I'm his age I'd be happy.

age is but a measure of experience, not a handicap on ability.

I'm clearly in a thoughtfull mood :)
