Evolution is...

The other thread made me curious about people's thoughts.

Of course I think Evolution is real. And that's all I'm gonna say --- I got tired of getting deep into the "shit" after many months on the PC Gamer Forums.

Evolution is real, anyone who disagrees should breed something like fish so they can watch heriditary genes in action.

Okay, I'll say this --- How do you think 98% of Basketball players look like Stretch Armstrong? They play the sport a good portion of their lives, so their bodies have to adapt to what they're doing. Their arms get longer, as do their legs, and generally they just shoot up.

My word, a Lamarckist.

But hey, most people inclined to play basketball are also probably more inclined to grow like that. (or they already are like that)

Uh... what does that have to do with evolution?

I agree with evolution because scientists have yet to come up with a more logical theory. Evolution seems much more likely than an all-powerful being snapping his fingers and popping up organisms.

Do I have to paint you a picture? I'm stating that they're evolving to suit their needs; their key need being to reach the basket more easily.

Historically, it's an example of Lamarckism, the idea that was the biggest rival explanation to Darwinism for the mechanism of evolution until it was eventually discredited. It was the root idea of Soviet Lysenkoism as well.

I'm assuming Pot is making an educated joke. :D

Adaptation is different from evolution. Evolution takes place over time through the passing of genes through generations, adaptation takes place within a lifetime of a single individual. Someone who "adapts" to have flexible muscles and becomes a contortionist does not pass on "flexible genes" to her children. o_0

Well, they didn't always know that, eh? When Lamarck's ideas were still prevalent, the mechanism for passing genetic information wasn't clear, so it wasn't known at the time whether or not organisms could pass acquired traits to their offspring.

I would have to disagree. First, practice doesn't make you tall! You may get bigger, stronger muscles, but it doesn't make you stronger. Look at high impact sports, sports that cause bones to grow stronger.Let's look at gymnastics. They aren't a tall group of people. Second, being tall is advantageous, but not necessary to be successful in basketball. There are tons of kids who play basketball like crazy until they are 45 years old and never get over 5'10" tall. You're argument is pretty weak.

edit: Sorry, other posts were posted as I was writing

One thing I'd like to add before I nod off to sleep is that I'm surprised how many people opted for "only possible answer". I was taken off-guard by that. I'll be curious to see the numbers in the morning.

Yes, evolution is real. Duh. It may be slightly different from how we understand it at the moment, but so what? That doesn't mean it's fraudulent...

And nice little joke there Pot. ;)

I voted for the second, since I'm cautious about accepting evolution wholesale as absolute truth. I mean, our current conception of evolution. I have no doubt that evolution is the explanation, just pointing out that we don't know everything. :p

Voted for "The best fit to the scientific data available today ", altough I would say that evolution is something you see everyday (if you are in my field that is :D ), so if I hadn't beeen trained to think like a scientist I would have gone for the first one :)
