Is it winning, or the the way you play the game that matters

What is it that makes a sports team (or player in non team sports) great?
I am going to use the word team to refer to both teams and players in non team sports. It is too clumsy to keep writing both.
Is it winning. Does a team only become great by winning trophies and championships. Is this enough to be great?
Does the style of play matter? Are sports about winning or about entertaining.
Some example teams from recent times:
Winners: New England Patriots, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Sampras, Els
Stylish Entertainers: Kansas City Chiefs, Barcelona, Lyons, Hewitt, Ballesteros
Obviously it is best to do both, win and entertain, but if your team had to choose, what would you prefer them to be, boring winners or fun to watch.

After waiting 86 years for a championship, I'd say there's something to be said about winning.

Fun to watch. Thats why i like the Sacramento Kings. They wont win championship, but they play the fastest and most entertaining basketball of all the teams.

I like to be a winner.
But if a loss occurs, I don't even let it bother me, cause I'm just too busy looking good!

My favourite teams never win (I hate them so much... ) but still I come back to them...

If you win, but do so without the slightest thread of sportsmanship you are just arrogent and dull.

i find that when you play a game with all your heart and you still lose it hurts a lot. so winning is improtant.

I very much like to win, but only because it is fun to win. If winning wasn't fun, I would cease to play.
So having fun is more important than winning.

Depends on the game being played.

It depends.
If your team has a history of being total pants, obvious a scrappy win is more important than a beautiful defeat.
However, if your team has a history of being good, you could argue the opposite.
Of course, 'I would have preferred a good performance and a defeat to that scrappy victory' is something patronising sports coaches say to annoy their opponents that they've just beaten, so...

I prefer what I watch to be entertaining. Example: Chelsea-Barcelona. I wanted Barca to win that (as I had money on them), but I didn't care that they lost because it was such a good match.
On the other hand, if I'm taking part, winning is everything.

I say the best sports games are the nail biters where your team wins, so it's a combination of both.

agreed, if im watching it i want it to be entertaining:example-the last super bowl(american football) this year it sucked even though my team won.:headbang:
if i am playing i am playing to win. i am not conserned on how entertaining it is to others who are watching.
