I hope it is. All of the talentless rock bands around today can fade into obscurity, and rock can go underground and be good again. Yay! :D

Rock is already dead. It died around 1996-97.

Most mainstream rappers are more inspired than most mainstream rock stars these days, so more power to them.

Sadly it is true. Rock has died. I wish like hell people would stop listening to the crap rock that is playing on our radios today because it can't compare to what rock was in the sixties, seventies, and yes, even the eighties.

Pfft, rock isn't dead. Rock hasn't even changed. Lots of fluff groups with a good solid backing. Just like all music. Rap has hits that come and go with figureheads in the background, people at the pinnacle of their game.
Besides, while A Simple Plan, Jet, and Theory of a Creedback may not be your bag, you have to admit that there are a lot of groups out there being innovative and carrying Rock to new levels, like Radiohead or Tom Waits.

...Oh my God.

Your theories about rock music can be easily disproven by so much as looking around your neighborhood. Garage bands anyone? Those people are not mainstream, and whether they go mainstream or not, they are still original with a start like that.

...That sad thing is.. hip-hop and rap took over, oppressing those garage bander's everywhere, drowning out their good lyrics with.. P Diddy.. so very depressing. :(

hear hear! amen! I second that! I prefer homegrown British rap because it seems to hit more of a

"It's refreshing to hear someone rap multisyllabic words together, and to talk about cartoons or food or ancient myology or anything other than how cool they think they are."

spot. But even that doesn't go completely back to "skillz on a mic" as it does go back to just making rap interesting.

Although I do disapprove of the sexism/homophobia found in loads of hip-hop, I wub Cypress Hill! And I approve of their anti-authority message. Everyone's favourite stoners! :D

exactly...i haven't gotten into a whole lot of u.k. hip-hop and would love to know of some groups that are like that in the uk scene...but you're right...make it interesting...don't have some guy gettin paid by your record company to write the lyrics...DO IT YOURSELF...put some thought into it...give me a story, not an ego check.....

Who cares if they rap about themselves? I have plenty of thought provoking music to listen to. Rap is fun to listen to. Not everything has to be deep and meaningful. Sometimes you can just sit back and enjoy absurdity.

To say that rappers can't think up good lyrics is, to me, an unsupportable claim. Man, I wish I could string together a rap like they can. The good rappers are really, really good, even if they don't rap about mythology or some crap.

And most rappers work very closely with other people in writing their lyrics when they aren't writing them by themselves.

What we need to do is start slaughtering record execs.

There are still very many good rock bands out there that never make it, and thus never even try to make the big time.

True...

Which is why filesharing and MP3's are a good thing. I'd never have heard of half of the music I listen to today if i'd stuck to what was advertised in my face and overplayed on radio...

I get sick of rappers who release whole CD's full of the drizzle you say is "absurdity".

Your next paragraph does not link together: good lyrics and stringing together good rap are two different things. You can string together crazy rap that makes no sense at all (bad lyrics), or you can have good lyrics rapped really bad. In my experience the U.K. "homegrown" rappers (actually the Terra Firma Krew isn't U.K. homegrown but whatever) rap about interesting stuff while also stringing it together very fluidly and ..just .. amazingly(if that is a word).

Rap is not simply about the meaning of the words, it is about wordplay and the beat and flow of the syllables and sounds.

Even the best rock lyricists don't come close to the level of wordplay that a good MC can muster.
