The cause of global warming?

This is something I have heard often over the years. Doesn't get much play in the media because it's to fashionable to name humans and particular countries at fault for global warming. But this is something we really have to consider at the root problem. In fact I think this is the problem. But read on and tell me what you think

Marrakech, the current composition of the atmosphere is completely out of wack, I believe it's naive to think that humanity isn't the cause, but I do agree there is a natural cycle involved.

I believe it's a mix between human pollution and a natural cycle, this isn't the first time it has been brought up, too. This wasn't quickly dismissed by enviromental scientists with agendas either.

In the end, I trust our scientists to make the right call.

Not our politicians, or lobbying groups, enviromental or pro-business.

It is irrelevant whether this is affecting the climate or not, since the warming effects of carbon dixoxide in the atmosphere is known (theoretically, not just empirically), we know that our efforts are contributing to global warming.

Based purely on the amount of greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere alone, it is estimated that the earth's average temperature will rise by appoximatly 2 degrees kelvin by 2050 (not taking into account all the various effects this might cause).

Now, given that the climate is changing, do we want to make it *worse* with our own contribution? After all it's not the temperature of the earth that matters, but the rate of change.

Since there is no *actual* evidence that this is happening now, it's just another random varible added to a rather disturbing model. Therefore we should act to reduce greenhouse gases, period.

Some say it's the "greenhouse" gases that we've been burning for the past couple of centuries that have cause a heating of our atmosphere.

Personally, I think it's all the flatulence created by the 6.75 billion people on this planet (highest it's ever been, and beans are easy to get to).

Only part of it is human related. If it were all human related, then the world would warm dramatically by 1900, when pollution was in nearly as great of volume as today's, but far dirtier. However, the deeper reason is the end of the Little Ice Age. Two hundred years is a blink of an eye in geological time. The earth has been warming because the Little Ice Age has ended, and God only knows when it will stop.

Let's not forget cows. There are millions, if not billions of cows world wide, each one's arse is spewing liters of methane into the atmosphere each and every day. It is a problem comperable with cars, especially Volvos because they're so much like cow pats.

Well, that may be a problem that can be solved with genetic engineering. If scientists are working on self-shearing sheep, then cows that don't fart methane are feasible.

I think you're forgetting the effect is culmalative, and the "dirt" in the pollution contributed little to global warming, but more to things like acid rain. It doesn't matter that the Earth is warming as a result of a natural process (if it is), we *don't* want it to get any warmer!

But here's the thing: we can't stop it. The climate is never stable, and it has changed even in the past 1,000 years.
Also, yes, there would be plenty of warming that resulted. It was the first large-scale use of carbon-based products for fuel, pumping massive amounts of CO2 into the air.

Well I dont disagree with the fact that humans have an impact. Would be foolish to say otherwise. But climate change is a fact of life on earth. With or without humans. There are signs that it is far more than human stupidity that is warming the earth.

Well, I do think that it's blown out of proportion, just a tad - like everything reported by anyone, liberal, conservative, or whatever. However, I can't stand it when people drive on nice, paved roads, alone, in their SUVs and Jeeps. And when they leave their car running. Gosh!

Precisely. A more serious problem, as mentioned before, is caused by animal flatulence. Have you ever smelt a horse fart? It sucks.

Firstly, the population then was tiny compared to what it is now, therefore the amount of CO2 released would actually be tiny, secondally, there would be a delayed effect while the Earth warmed up (in the same way coastal towns are cooler in summer) and thirdly, again it doesn't matter that we can't stop climate fluctuations! We may as well just say, we can't stop crime, therefore we should do nothing to stop it.

The theory of global warming - i.e. that increases in atmospheric Carbon Dioxide produced by man are causing a worldwide rise in temprature, is a crock.

Go read Michael Chichton's new book, State of Fear - the hype is exposed for what it is. Check his references too (they're listed in the book).

There is no dispute at all about the fact that even if punctiliously observed, (the Kyoto Protocol) would have an imperceptible effect on future temperatures -- one-twentieth of a degree by 2050. "

Dr. S. Fred Singer, atmospheric physicist
Professor Emeritus of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia,
and former director of the US Weather Satellite Service;
in a Sept. 10, 2001 Letter to Editor, Wall Street Journal

Just how much of the "Greenhouse Effect" is caused by human activity?

It is about 0.28%, if water vapor is taken into account-- about 5.53%, if not.

Look I dont think people are generally disagreeing with the point that its getting hotter. Just look outside. The facts on how this is happening is the main arguement. I think it is hype that man is solely responsible.

Methane from livestock is the biggest source of the greenhouse gases in New Zealand. Worldwide, livestock emissions reach approximately 94 teragrams (Tg=one million tons) annually. etc

Cows also cause deforestation, drought and famine. (just a bit simplified view...)

Protaria (apologies if I've mispelt your sn), dismissing global warming as hype is not stupid at all - at least, it's about as stupid as dismissing any dissenting view. Most sources - Michael Critchon's book included - are slanted on this issue one way or the other. The truth of the matter is we're not sure exactly how much temperature has been rising in the past few centuries, and we're certainly not sure how much of this is the responsibility of human activity. Even after that level, we're definitely not sure how much cutting back to our limits can reduce climate change (a natural process, by the way). What is for sure is that there are a lot of people around and they need cars. Electronics. Planes. Environmental regulations or not, we're still going to need cars. Electronics. Planes.

The whole global warming theory is a shaky ground at best. There are, contrary to popular belief (it seems), many esteemed scientists who hold different views. The area is too politically motivated and the firm knowledge too little to take anyone at their word, however.

Personally, I wouldn't mind right now if there wasn't two feet of snow outside.
