Futurama

I wrote this poem when I first heard that Futurama was cancelled. I'm ready to share it with people now.

Seven Cartoon Angels
Seven cartoon angels were standing in a row,
Praying for the lovers that Fox said had to go.

Professor Farnsworth saw them come. He had no thought to flee.
He reassured his frightened son, “The fans will set us free.”
The rifles fired, his heartbeat stopped. He perished with his clone.
And seven cartoon angels took two more angels home.

Hermes and Labarbara wept for their son, Dwight.
They knew within their bleeding hearts this would be their last fight.
And when they fell, Hermes still clutched his bureaucratic tome.
And seven cartoon angels took two more angels home.

Dr. Zoidberg panicked now. “Woopwoopwoopwoop!” he cried.
The Fox soldiers were merciless and Dr. Zoidberg died.
Be still, o noble shellfish. You’ve no more need to moan.
A thousand feasts await you when the angels take you home.

Amy clutched her green-skinned love. “We’ll meet again” she said.
Then she screamed her final scream and Amy Wong lay dead.
Kif fell with just a single shot, because he had no bone.
And seven cartoon angels took two more angels home.

As Bender fought, his metal fists were flailing left and right.
But even as he struck, he knew that this was his last fight.
A can of lager in his hand, the robot died alone.
And seven cartoon angels took a metal angel home.

Fry and Leela stood there as they held each other tight.
He looked her in the eye and said “This will be our last fight.”
They faced the guns together as they made their final stand
When the dust cleared, Leela’s ray-gun still lay smoking in her hand.

“I’m sorry, Leela” whispered Fry. He knew he couldn’t win.
And then his wish was granted when the soldiers fired at him.
Seven cartoon angels took them to the promised land.
Where they will live forever in the heart of every fan.

Yeah. Family Guy, for one.

Futurama is far from dead. Fans of the show still enjoy watching it on Adult Swim. In fact, even after two years the ratings for Futurama on Adult Swim are higher than ever. Besides they were able to end the new episodes with an appropriate ending (holophoner Fry and Leela walking off hand in hand, implying they get together), even if it didn't wrap EVERYTHING up.

I have all 4 seasons of Futurama on DVD, and I've driven my girlfriend to distraction by watching them a lot, and, more importantly, incorporating key lines into everyday conversation.

Most usefully:

Yeah, well, I'm gonna go get my own (Whatever)! With Blackjack, and Hookers! And forget the (Whatever)- can be used in almost any situation!

My best mate has actually used "Hey, sexy mama... wanna kill all humans?" as a pickup line... and didnt get a slap or a strange look as a response.

"Only amateurs do two takes! Now, throw in a reaction shot of me and print it."- Dismissing complaints that something wasn't done properly the first time around.

"With my last breath, I curse Zoidberg!"- is now used to signify an irrational dislike of something for no reason whatsoever.

Great show, it really is. It's a pity that, unlike Family Guy, it's not being resurrected anytime soon. At least I've got the DVDs and comics to keep me company...

thank you, poet, for expressing all our grief.

okay. i love the simpsons. love futurama. but i will never get why people like the family guy. i know what you're going to say--"it's really not!"--but the family guy just always seemed to me like a really poor simpsons ripoff. it's like with every joke they're saying "look how hip and ironic family guy is"; whereas with say futurama the hipness and irony is subtle and more artful.

now i'm really asking for it, but i also have to say i never found south park very funny. little kids swearing, that's funny for about three seconds, then it's just brainless and boring.

maybe i am just too old...

anybody remember the Pac-Man cartoon?

*wipes a tear from his eye onto his claw*

That was SOOO beautiful. They called me noble, and promised me a free hot meal!

And on this day, Dr. John Zoidberg feels honored by this beautiful poem.

There are many similarities between the Simpsons and Family Guy. They're both cartoon families that were aired on FOX that we all get a laugh or two out of. They both have their strong points, but Family Guy just feels more naturally funny, while the Simpsons still tries to pass itself off as serious.

Also, Family Guy isn't very good at individual character progression, but rather the humor is based almost entirely off of the hillarious group antics. The Simpsons seem to be able to make each character stand on it's own legs with the humor given, but the humor isn't as consistant as Family Guy.

An episode of Family Guy has on average a lot more funny moments than does an episode of the Simpsons, and the humor is far easier to attain, there is very little depth to any of the really good jokes. The subtleties of Family Guy are great, and unlike the Simpsons, are not required to understand the entire episode.

Ok, this is quite enough from me. Peace.
