2005 Major League Baseball

Since Spring Training is in full swing (no pun intended), lets discuss some baseball.

I am a White Sox fan, and much to my chagrin, I am positive they will waste the year, mired in mediocrity.

Their outfield went from outstanding to decent at best. Their rotation and bullpen is not any better, just older. And now they have to rely on always injured and always whining Frank Thomas and incredible inconsistent Paul Konerko.

And I don't even want to talk about their love affair with that asshole Carl Everett.

Baseball sucks.

Then you'd have my team, the Phillies.

Who couldn't like baseball? Other than Europeans or other Europhiles?
No true American could think baseball is boring, it is the American sport.
And don't even get me started on soccer, the most boring sport known to man, if it can even be called a sport at all...How can you enjoy a sport where the games last forever and the most common score is a tie of 0 to 0? The fact that you can even have a tie disqualifies soccer as a serious sport in my book...

Hey man, come on, don't be like that. I'm an O's fan too. They are going to be competative this year. Still may end up in 3rd, but at least it'll be a close(r) 3rd. The Yankees are old and overated and the Red Sox looks like may be without Schilling for a while. That will really hurt them. The offense will be one of the best in the league, the bullpen will also be one of the best, and the rotation... well it really can only go up from where we started last season. :D

I've always wondered why it was called the World Series too, Riverlund so - I looked it up. Here's a portion of the defintion:

The "World" appellation has stuck despite the fact that only teams in the United States United States article and Canada Canada article participate. While some would contend that there is no reason to believe that the World Series winner is a significantly better team than any club team outside Major League Baseball Major League Baseball article , no challenges have been made by other leagues. Attempts to pit the North American North America article champions against champions in the Japanese or Latin American leagues have, so far, not succeeded.

A persistent myth is that the "World" in "World Series" came about because the New York World New York World article newspaper sponsored it. Baseball researcher Doug Pappas refutes that claim, demonstrating a linear progression from the phrase "World's Championship Series" (used to describe the 1903 1903 article series) to "World's Series" to "World Series". Furthermore, investigation of the New York World for the relevant years revealed no evidence of the supposed sponsorship. (For details, see Mr. Pappas's web page on the subject: http://web.archive.org/web/20031212202050/http://roadsidephotos.com/baseball/name.htm

It's funny, but the new Mets look alot like the old mets. It's a shame that they're going to screw up another great manager. They've already ruined Howe's career, now they're going to ruin Randolph's.

Anyway, we already know that the Yankees will win the AL east, the Braves will win the NL east and whoever wins the AL central will barely be above .500

Get the hell out. "Mets ruined Howe." Moneyball Howe is one of the worst managers I've ever seen. He's sub .500 for his career and he had shittier years in Oakland than he ever had in NY.

Four good years don't make a great manager. Howe's got the common sense God gave a fencepost. And he doesn't understand AL ball. The man banks everything on the tater. Players said playing for Art was like playing for their grandpa. I've never seen Art argue a call. He's not a leader. He caved in to the veteran "assistant managers" like Lieter, Franco, and Mike P. Compared to Howe, Valentine was one of the great minds of baseball.

He's unqualified to be growing tomatoes. But so long as he's growing tomatoes, he's not screwing up any ballclubs.
The Lagonia States
16-03-2005, 17:37
Howe's actually an excellent manager, but managers will only thrive in enviroments that are condusive to their style. Howe is a laid back manager, who believes in letting his players dop their job and simply try to promote a good clubhouse atmosphere. This is not what the Mets need, and this is not what Willie Randolph will give them.

Willie is also a great leader and has been a talented member of the Yankees coaching staff for years, but he's more of a Joe Torre type manager. Willie would do well to get the most out of players that have already been established as a fully functional winning team.

What the Mets need is a revolutionary manager, one who will go in and show them who's boss. This is what the Yankees did in the mid-nineties and it worked wonderfully. The Mets will not win with all those egos floating around, just as the Yankees didn't win under similar circumstances in the early nineties.

Ideally, this leader would be the great Buck Showalter. If you want to win a championship, he's probably not your guy, but give him a year or two and then they'll be all ready for someone else to take them there. He lays down the law, busts egos and turns losing players into winners.

Manager Lou Pinella is also an excellent choice.
