When they arrived to meet the salesperson, she was suprised at their skin color (she showed apparent suprise and disgust on her face) and "magically" raised the price to $4,000. I don't know what the hell is wrong with some people, but this is 2005 not 1950.

That's where you start speaking to them about the latest book you've read, or something you have in common, and show proper manners, and prove to them that their biases are baseless.

Ugh, believe it or not: I live in the north, in Columbus, Ohio; and there are roughly 4 or 5 people in my class that are just like that. One of them has a "****** hunting licence", that he said he got when going hunting "down south". Those people are some of the most ignorant/stupid people I've seen in my life.

I'm not depressed, I'm actually quite happy, I just don't care. I've gone through many tests for depression so I know I'm not depressed.

When I was about 12 (6 years ago), my mother and I started dissagreeing on a lot of things. Right about that time my aunt died of breast cancer, something my mom had contracted 3 years prior, and came out of. She got a bad case of PTSD and started taking everything out on me. Eventually because I was so out of line, according to her, I was beaten, choked, verbally abused, had all of my rights restricted for nothing, the whole nine yards. Eventually it got so bad she proclaimed she hated me and wished I was never born. A week later I found out that my mother had problems and had problems with fertility. I found that my older sister had a surrogate mother, my aunt. I found that my father was also a huge advocate of condoms. So on top of being a small chance of getting fertalized to begin with, my fater was using a condom, slimming that chance even more. I was 16 at the time. I had already closed most of my emotions off, and the ones that really showed were hatred, but this threw me over the line and I shut off all emotions. Ever since then I have not cared about anything, until I recently met a person I actually feel something for. I met her and stayed closed for a bit, but then I opened up to her, and found out she was in a similar situation with her father, although he never beat her. She had also closed off most of her emotions to other people, and we are apparently the more open with each other then any body else.

I consider myself to live in a fairly rural, southern, and potentially racist area (Western North Carolina) and to my happy surprise, I've encountered almost no racism. The only racism I've seen even near here was actually in Charlotte, a very urban and modern area. Most of the racism I saw there was directed at the growing Latino population.

I guess really, though, location doesn't matter. There's asses everywhere.

Yes, and this general apathy has hurt me harshly. It being my senior year in High school, I don't care about my future, which is a bad thing. I'm a smart student*, I just don't care. I know I should be applying myslef so I can do well in the future, but I don't care about that, I actually wonder what it would be like to get shot, and what it would be like to die, and if you've ever talked with me about sucide you would know I would never commit it. I see suicide as weak, and I figure that with all I've been through I might as well be as strong as possible.

I live in Miami, Florida. Considering this is one of the most racially diverse cities in the US, I'm suprised it even occurred.

My mother told me about the same thing during an argument when I was 15, she said I was a "nothing but a failed abortion". I wasn't very surprised, since I knew that I arrived at an inconvenient time and my parents had had to get married because of me. I was terribly hurt, of course, and I moved away from home and never really managed to talk much to my mother after that.

15 years later she suddenly told me that at the time she was expecting me, my father's stepfather had offered to arrange for an abortion, but she had refused. I was so happy, it was such a relief I burst into tears. All those years I had thought she didn't want me, and all this sorrow had been a complete waste of time!

I think maybe you should ask her what she meant. Maybe she said it in a moment's anger and didn't realize what effect it had on you. Maybe you can save yourself from a lot of pain. At least you don't have anything to lose by asking.

As you get older, you tend to be more aware of racism than you were as a child. I my case (half Native, half Irish), people tended to not focus their racism on me as a kid, but felt fine about doing it once I was an adult. It IS shocking when it's not something you've experienced a lot, and have been raised with the belief that this sort of thing is no longer acceptable. Well, it isn't really, but that doesn't mean that people don't go around with such disgusting thoughts on their tongues...

You'll never change these people's minds...nor should you put the effort in to do so. That isn't your job. Your job is to live your life, as you are, with no apologies for your race. Don't let these sorts of attitudes bring you down, but ALWAYS let them shock you, because you need to be aware of them, and you need to prepare any children you may have for them. The people that you will surround yourself with will find these beliefs just as repugnant as you, and in the end, who matters more? Your loved ones, or some bigot in a grocery store?

Ok so I am Puerto Rican people, thats right Puerto Rican, and damn proud of it. I have never been at the brunt of open racism. But since I live in Alaska...uh yah that is another discussion. I am the brunt of passive racism. Many of my friends don't even know it, but when they joke about me not being "black enough" or the "token black man" even "oreo, he's black on the outside, but white on the inside!" that gets the gold star for racism. Fortunately these friends are close enough to me that they do not do it often and stfu when I tell them to. Unfortunately, what they say/do just proves that racism seems to tag along no matter what.


Now with Kej's situation, I would not beat the crap out of them, I would not get into a discussion with them. Instead I would put myself in a vulnerable position to them, whether verbally or physically, and when they try and hurt me I would tear them down (again either in a verbal debate/discussion, or in a complete fist fight). See, if you "beat the shit" out of racists right off the bat, that just concretes their beliefs even more. And if you try to debate or discuss with them in the hope you will change their mind, that will not work either. Instead allow them to begin the discussion and when they finally think they got you, take them down.

The Africans were/are not animals, they adapted (not evolved) to their environment. Its as simple as that. Last time I looked, that was Max Barry's decision, not yours. And he and [violet] explicitly allows racist opinions to be posted uncensored, along with all other views and counterpoints. If that's a problem for you, you might want to post elsewhere. Another outburst like that last one, and you won't have a choice in the matter.

Let's see how fast I were to get banned if I went around posting "White People Suck". Now I don't believe in that nonsense, however I would be banned fairly quickly wouldn't I? Now as for restraint, yes I shouldn't have said that but hey he deserved it. Now I'm sure you are a logical intelligent person, but this whole situation seems a bit flipped around.

It's been very interesting lately. I'm 16 turning 17 in 6 days and there's been some "things" occuring lately that I've never really observed before. I have a multiracial background (African American/Caucasion). In the 16 years of my life I have never encountered blatant or highly noticable racism, until a few days ago.

My wonderful tale starts in the grocery store and I hear two gentlemen discussing something very shocking. The conversation went a something like this:

Guy 1: I can't stand it when they advertise products with niggers in the commercials.

Guy 2: Yeah, I don't even allow ****** food in my house.

Guy 1: America is getting more corrupt every day, especially our women. The women who have abominations with those niggers are low.

I was SO shocked, I wasn't offended at the moment because I was in a state of disbelief at what I had just heard. A few days later my parents called a luxury apartment sales office in order to get pricing on one of the units. The price given on the unit was approximately $2,500. When they arrived to meet the salesperson, she was suprised at their skin color (she showed apparent suprise and disgust on her face) and "magically" raised the price to $4,000. I don't know what the hell is wrong with some people, but this is 2005 not 1950.

Fun. There's a hip thing that i only know maybe three white girls who're capable of doing (it's a dancing thing) and only one of those would actually think to bring it into the bedroom.
