Best football result ever that didn't happen

I offer you all a blatant rip-off of the other football thread but with a cunning twist thrown in.

What would have been the best result ever, had you been able to stop one football match out of history at any point. i.e. England 1-0 Germany if you stopped the Euro 96 final after 5 mins (I think we scored in the 2nd minute or something).

My only rule is that you can only include scorelines that actually existed, no matter how briefly, so no Man Utd 0-37 Forest Green I'm afraid! :p

My choice would have to be PNE 2-0 Arsenal after about 20 minutes in the 98/99 (I think) F.A. cup. How glorious those few minutes were!

I wish Holland had not bad Penalties called on the finals

I think that in 74 and 78 Holland was absolutely the best team..
The best team of the 70s and denied twice.

and they were robed by the refs VS the Local team...

at the WorlCup local team has a unfair Advantage...

Superbowl is better that way.

But were they ever ahead in the matches that knocked them out? If not, then I'm afraid they can't count. Well, not for this thread anyway. :)

Then truly they were robbed! I remember being suspicious of some of the decisions that went S.Korea's way 3 years ago too.

How about France 0-1 England in Euro 2004? So damn close...

Arsenal 1 - 1 Sheffield United (1999)

Marc Overmars (spit) cheats, gets Arsenal their winning goal.

Sheffield United 0 - 0 Arsenal (2003)

This is the one i feel least claim to, but according to the majority of people i've heard comment on it the ref should have blown the whistle when Wayne Allison went down injured, instead he allowed play to continue and Arsenal scored.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Sheffield United (2005)

Referee inexplicably denys Danny Cullip's first goal - a decision i haven't heard a single person, Arsenal fan United fan or Neutral, agree with. Fails to send off Reyes for slappign someone in the face. Fails to send off Fabrigas (i think?) for horrific tackle on Nick Montgomery.

First one...yeah, ok, that was bad. No defence.
Second one - possibly. But Arsenal were better on the day anyway, and would most likely have won.
Third - the scoreline never existed. Ok, the goal shouldn't have been disallowed (as an Arsenal fan, I still don't see any reason for it being disallowed). Reyes didn't get sent off because the referee didn't see the incident. And Fabregas' tackle really wasn't as bad as everyone says! Christ, he committed himself to the tackle before Montgomery passed the ball, he went in with only one foot, and his studs weren't raised. It was just unlucky that he caught Montgomery in a bad way.

So yeah. My own ideas - Manchester United 0 - 0 Exeter City (replay)
Australia 0 - 0 American Samoa (Ok, twas only for a few minutes, but it existed)
Bayern Munich 1 - 0 Manchester United (1999 Champions League final)
England 1 - 0 Portugal (Euro 2004)
England 1 - 0 Brazil (World Cup 2002)

I'd have stopped Diego Maradona's Hand of God.

Leeds 0-0 Sunderland (1973)

It would have gone into penalties, and we would have had a 50-50 chance at another FA Cup.

And yeah, I was -16 when it happend. :p

Denmark - Brazil 1-0 in world cup 98 (France)! Always for the underdog :)

Correct me if I'm wrong about the competition

Has to be England 2 - 1 Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. An awesome game that we so should have won without Beckham's stupidity and Campbell having his 'goal' disallowed. Worth it purely for Michael Owen's wonder goal.

Scotland 1 - 0 Brazil. 1982 World Cup. David Nary scored aftter 18 mins. (Real result Scotland 1 - 4 Brazil). Why do Scotland always seem to be in the same group as Brazil when they make it to the finals?

To make sure they never get past the first stage. It's a conspiracy by FIFA.
