I'm no Canada hater or anything, I just found this article http://www.weeklystandard.com/Check.asp?idArticle=5349&r=tpijp and would like to hear some comments on it.

The worst insult to a Canadian is calling them American.

I stopped reading that after the third derision of Canada. It's a worthless opinion piece not even concerned with objectivity, and thus a waste of time.

:p :p America could really learn alot if we tried to be more like Canada!

Or atleast the Gov.

Really?
Hmm.
I guess I'm hardened by years of being insulted, though, so I'm probably not the best judge...

What could America learn from Canada? I'm from neither, so I'm not trying to sound threatening or anything.

I'm canadian and american. :(

But holy shit, can't this guy at least save his cheap insults based on complete and total ignorance for the second paragraph? Here I thought you had to know something about whatever you're writing about to get it published.

They have spurned our missile-defense shield out of spite, even knowing it would save their Canadian bacon.
For one thing, if you come to canada, our bacon isn't that crappy ham shit you people keep attributing to us.
For another, we didnt' go along with the missile defense shield because we have better ways to spend our damn money, on such things as health care and education rather than pieces of crap that have failed in every single test thrown at them. Perhaps if you come back a couple years from now when you have a piece of crap that's cheaper and actually works...

What a fucking asshole.

Given that the U.S. spends more for healthcare per capita than Canada and more than half their citizens arent' covered... perhaps they could work on that.

That and they could learn to make good beer instead of piss in bottles.

I didn't intend for this to be an anti american or anti canadian thread, I just thought the article was interesting. The point is that it shows that the rift is not only here on NS.

ROFLMAO!

How does it feel Canada, to be the victim of unfair over-generalization? Easier to give than recieve, no?

Here are some choice samples:
"North America's attic"
"What I got by going to Canada was a cold - Thoreau"
"a docile, Zamboni-driving people "
"Canadians responded as Canadians always will when faced with overt aggression. They wrote inordinate numbers of letters of concern"

Funny shit! My Canadian family members will laugh their ass off at this! It'll be a change of pace since they are so often blushing instead.

We could also learn how to murder hookers in Vancouver and not have the police investigate. :)

This guy was initially funny in his article. But then he quickly got boring. Canada's an independent country and we do things are own way, apparently that's a problem for the writer. I happen to like the states. I've visited a lot and I like the people. I'm not crazy about the current US government but then so are a lot of americans.

To bad the guy who wrote the article was not so well informed. Most of the truths are half truths. Sad really. Not a bad read if you can get past all the whining. Some of his facts are only half right, and I think he just mad up some of the other stuff to make the other half truths seem more believable.

Almost forgot. I have met lots of Americans and have enjoyed their company and conversation. I also have no love of the current leadership of the States but it should not reflect badly on the people of the country as a whole. America the beautiful and America the free.

What a bunch of unadulterated claptrap.
A whole article of generalizations and biased assumptions, made by a writer who had their mind made up that it was a joke before they put pen to paper.
A writer who pulls unrelated snippets out of the air and creates the appearance of that being the norm.
For the record,
I am Canadian, not British and we were singing O Canada prior to 1980, God Save the Queen is the royal anthem, not the national anthem.
I can't drive a Zamboni any more than most Americans can ride a horse and rope cattle.
The wait time for medical surgery is over blown, last Friday I had orphopedic surgery on my elbow, my wait from seeing the specialist to operation was 3 days.
Yes, our police took too long to capture the man responsible for the dissapearance and murders of the prostitutes from the downtown eastside, but if we are picking at police mistakes, didn't American police take one of Dahmer's victims back to him so he could finish the job.
I could go on, but enough.

Because, we are north America's Russia. If you invade us, you will die. Look at Napolean, Hitler, and a lot of other guys.

but there is nothing to invade more than 100 miles north of the american boarder.

I didn't realize that a sense of humor was in such rare supply in Canada - has that been socialized too?

Considering the number of Canadian comedians that are on TV in the US I'd say no.

BTW I've studied humour and that article misses the mark by a wide margin. It doesn't even qualify as Don Rickles' style of belittling. If it was meant to be funny it was weak material poorly executed.

I'm not sure if any one is aware of this, but "The Weekly Standard" is owned by the same jackass that owns Fox news, Rupert Murdoch. If you trust a single word he has ever printed, than , well I won't say what I think of your ability to tell fact from fiction.

Well that would explain the shortage in Canada then - they exiled their only people with humor to the US - or maybe they just came here because they couldn't make a living in Canada what with the socialized humor and all.

BTW - It is good that in Canada they are teaching humor - maybe someday there won't be such a shortage. It will be very difficult until you get over your self-rightious indignation. You should try it - As I said in post 14, now you know how it feels to be the victim of unfair over-generalization. For you it is obviously easier to give than to recieve.

There are only few that we do well in movies and television that is comedy, documentaries and news, nothing else makes it really.
