Advertisements! WTF???

Is anyone besides me totally fed up with television advertising? How the hell can the dim-bulbs who make these things live with themselves???

Just saw an ad where they were trying to convince me to get all excited about something called "The Little Giant." The damned thing is a ladder! A damned ladder, for crying out loud!

How can they say, "Save up to $500 or more!" Sheese! the term "up to" sets an upper limit, so how can there be "more?"

And the local automobile advertising! OMG! Why oh why do these cretins think that because the owner acts like an idiot in his own advertising that's somehow going to convince me to buy from him? Give me a break!

Some of the worst ads I have ever seen advertise things on the Internet. Like those morons sitting at their computer desks getting all excited about some damned Website: "I went to this Website [ notice they never actualy say the name of the Website! ], filled out the form and now I'm making $90,000 a month!" Right. As IF! "It wasn't a get rich quick scheme, but guess what! I did!" I guess we're suppose to think that because these total morons got rich by visiting a Website, then surely we surely would be able to!

Anyone else have an ad they love to hate?

Anyone else have an ad they love to hate?
The latest Burger King ad for their "new" sandwich.
It has little or nothing to do with anything, and looks as though someone had been slipping LSD into the advertising division's food.

And some of those Toyota ads that have nothing to do with the trucks. I hate those.

Is that the Burger King ad with the African-American country & western singers and all the gorgeous women? I have to admit that the women are nice to look at, but you're absolutely right about the ad having very little to do with anything Burger King makes. Your comment about LSD can be applied to advertising people across the board, in my opinion. Heh!

There's a TV in the living room here at the dorms. We have free cable.

I've used it for total of five minutes all year.

TV went to hell the instant they invented Reality shows.

The only thing worth watching is the now-endangered decent documentaries, and some of the shows on Adult Swim. And a show or two Nick if you're not in the mood to stimulate brain cells...

Television, like public schools, seems to be aimed at the lowest common denominator. I can count the number of programs which challenge me to think, or which impart interesting information on the fingers of one hand. Sigh. :(

I mute and/or turn off my TV when it gets to commercials, they cause me cronic headaches with their stupidity, ignorance, and moronicism. I really wish someone would kill the fuckers that make the commercials so I don't see anymore. But if thats not bad enough, THEY ACTUALLY WORK, which reinforces my already low opinion of humanity and our chances to survive the next century.

Also, the Morning Musume ad for Epson printers where they fly around in cute costumes delivering prints to each other and giving the V for victory sign are annoying as hell.

Well, here's the trick.

Smart people can completely ignore commercials.

The only time I've ever been tempted by a commercial is when it was something I'd have wanted ANYWAYS.

Delissio pizza, god they make it seem like it gives orgasms, makes you a multi-millionaire and makes members of the opposite and same sex fantasize about you.

Burger King, in general, has crap ads. Not just the "Rock Candy Mountain" ripoff bit, but the ones with the "king" mascot.

Like the guy waking up next to the guy in the rubber king mask. It's generally not a good idea marketing-wise to say that your mascot has gay sex. That sort of thing is usually left up to the public to figure out, like with Spongebob.

Hate all the commercials for toothpaste, and how fantastic tehy are compared to thers.

There is expically one whhich contaians bleeching substances, where a girl has been at the beach, and the narrator says something like "when you get a tan, you see it right away, but how about your teeths?" And she looks like a total moron.

Ususally I just zap around during commercials. Luckily I live in Sweden, so it isn't as bad as in the US when it comes to the amount of breaks...

Personally, I hate comercials that use sex appeal. Like the old Pepsi comercials that had Britney Spears.

For two reasons:

1. In my opinion, using sex appeal is the most shameless way to get your point across.

2. This thing objectifies women yes, but it also makes men look like IDIOTS. They think they can sell me something just because they plaster a bitch like Britney Spears or Anna-Nicole-Smith* on my TV? HELL NO! Give men a little more credit! Jesus! We all aren't oversexed perverts!

*Post "Trimspa". And yes I am well aware that the whole this is bullshit, and like Jared from Subway, they probably just paid for the liposuction.

I hate no advertisments, mainly because if they're absolutely terrible they amuse me more than anything. Damnit. No wait. I hate any advert that's longer than say... 20 seconds long. Especially those ones for music. You know.

"This limited edition album is not available in the shops, order now and save £2.99 on post and packaging, again, this is not available in the shops." gah... they last for AGES. I hates them. The music on them is usually pretty bad too.

The Aiful commercials with the stupid dog were pretty bad as well.

The Ginza Jewelry Maki ads with that stupid woman rolling in her diamonds are pretty awful.

But the worst ads on Japanese TV are those on CNN for local (often foreign) businesses that appear to have been done on a budget of about a $100.

Whoever it was, yes we did have the Neandathal Kellogs cornfalkes one in the UK.

I didn't watch much American tv but what I remember the adverts were really boring, 'you don't need to diet, the fat is to do with middle age, take these pills, you don't need to be middle aged to take them, call 1800 RIP OFF today for your free sample.' At least in the UK they can make you laugh sometimes (as anyone who watches Tarrant on TV knows) and although that Honda Accord ad is one of the longest it got such rave comments, because it took skill to make. Whereas Michael Winner and his eSure ads get among the most annoying. (My dad did a version of that for the Staff awards) 'you just ran into the back of my..brand...new...car!' 'Don't worry dear it's only a commercial.' 'Hello mum!' I mean...wtf?

What's the point of ad free tv if there's nothing to watch...hmm...today's schedule from 4pm:
... continued EastEnders (rpt)
16:30 - 17:00 As Time Goes By (rpt?)
17:00 - 17:35 Songs of Praise
17:35 - 18:25 Kidnapped (ooh an old film :p)
18:25 - 18:55 Last of the Summer Wine (rpt)
18:55 - 19:45 Antiques Roadshow
19:45 - 20:05 BBC News (all of 20min)
20:05 - 20:10 BBC Local News (ooh 5min!)
20:10 - 21:00 Casualty (on a Sunday? oook)
21:00 - 22:00 Supervolcano (wow an interesting documentary...finishes Monday of course, and then there's the other two part documentary about Yellowstone Park...definitely getting their money's worth out of this one)
22:00 - 22:15 BBC News (15min now)
22:15 - 23:15 People Power (documentary about..riots. Yes riots.)
23:15 - 23:45 Billy Connolly's World Tour of...(with a title too long for the programme it reflects the arrogance of this totally unfunny comedien, oh yey)
23:45 - 01:20 The Innocent Sleep (1996 film starring..Michael Gambon [he still stars?] with violence and strong language that no-one's heard of)

So that's tonight's Sunday line up...can I be bothered to get out of bed yet. Damn I have to eat once today so yes :(

Edit: oh yea, at least ITv has some decent films and dramas on it usually. Channel 4 has...decent news..um...um..hmmmm.....occasionally some American comedy if I can be bothered to turn it on. I can't say I subscribe to the 'I have to watch this fantastic American series' fan club. One big minus: Big bloomin' Bruda. We don't care what a group of idiots do when shut up ok!

Fortunately in the UK we still have a far higher quality of TV programmes than in the USA and the BBC remains free of advertisements due to the TV license which I believe is worth the price. All the other commercial channels however are blighted by about 2 - 3 minutes of adverts every 15 - 20 minutes and I immediately turn off the volume or switch to another channel during these adverts.

Oh god, I cannot stand the new Burger King commerical with all those whorey women. I think it puts down females, and every time I see it, I feel a deep amount of shame and disgust.

Aside from that, hell yeah I am sick of commercials. TV in General. They are always trying to leach off of us. Oh look at how cool this gadget is! Then you get it and it is crap. I hate the attitude which is like "Oh boy my life is so much better now that I have this action figure". I dunno, I can't even describe what I feel about advertisements.

What I am really disliking is that now when you watch movies featured on TV, in the corner every once in a while an advertisement pops up that is all bright so you have to look at it because it caught your attention.. I mean come on.. if 10 minutes of commercials wasn't enough, now there are commercials while I am watching a program.

I look at every commercial in that way. Maybe it's because I hang out with a lot of Emo kids. Most of them are against the Corps.

There are good commercials though, but I admit most of them are terrible.

I think the best recent one was a Verizon commercial.
The guy is driving along in his car, his wife calls and says:
"Hey honey, have you heard about the creepy guy the police are looking for? They say he's hitchiking."
The guy hears "Hey honey, have you heard about....creepy guy...bzzz".
Guy says "Sorry dear, cant hear you." and hangs up.
Guy looks over to the passegner seat, which is occupied by a large guy in a hockey mask.
Guy says something I cant remember >_<
Hockey-mask guy "Mruh."
Guy "Not much of a talker, are you?"
Commercial cuts to talking about Verizons larger service areas.

I actually laughed at that one, but thats just me. :p

New system, TV stations pay for the shows they have with $ they get from subscribers who order a la carte, thus, no ads, and only the good shows survive. Show does not get good ratings, station loses money by less people subscribing, show is dropped, replaced by better show, it all works out, and we pay for the shows, not advertisers.

I really hate the new Carl's Jr ones with the unborn baby .

I will never eat there again , ever

I know!!!! That commercial defies all odds of having so little to do with the product it's scary. yeah so the mom is eating jalepenos...and the slogan is "not for babies"-but this is just too literal.

the National American University commercials are pretty annoying too....I"m sad to admit I know the words to the song because it is on so much. :(

I think the fact that commercials are on every 5 minutes during a show has turned me into a chronic remote flipper... I will try and watch tv but can rarely get through a whole program because I enevitably flip during commercials.. which annoy me more then fingernails down a chalkboard.. So needelss to say i rarely watch TV anymore... Movies... DVD's and a friend of mine gets shows off movie channels so no commercials for me... ever so much better... They wonder why everyone seems to be ADD these days? hell they give us shows in 5 to 10 minute intervals and wonder why we cant concentrate? @_@ Besides the shows all sucking.... there is that too...

I know. They're pitched to the lowest common denominator. This is one of the major reasons I seldom watch anything other than the Science Channel, The History Channel, The SciFi Channel ( which has, BTW, started repeating itself! ), and FOX News.
