Do you know a hero? Do you know someone who did something that amazed you by its virtue? Has someone you know, or you yourself done something amazing we should all know about?

A friend of mine once pulled two tourists out of the surf, swam out and pulled them with his boogie board. A rip had been dragging them towards a rock jetty and would have cut them like so much liver, but he calmly and quickly took charge, went in and got them while many bigger guys just stood around.

So why not regale us with your tales of amazing actions? Do you know someone who should be mentioned in this thread? Only first and second hand accounts please, no urban myths.

Uma Thurman. Her heroicness in 'Kill Bill' is amazing.

Yes, I know several hero's in my lifetime.

Some like my Pastor, Pastor Ang. Was the Vice Superintendent of the Internal Security Act. He saved alot of towns and villages during racial riots of '69. Thousands of people's lives have been saved because of him by organizing the police force and diverting the mobs.

I knew a guy in the Army back home I'd say was a hero. I dunno what would have happened to me if I didn't know him.

Professor Robert Short, and Dr Coovadia, who are part of the international effort to fight AIDS.
Aside from research and stuff, they're involved in grassroots efforts to reduce infection rates.

I know Robert because he lectures at my university, and actively involves students in the fight against AIDS. He gives very stirring lectures too.

When I was five I watched my father run into the surf (on Bailey's Beach near Dargaville, NZ) and swim out to rescue a fisherman who had been caught in a rip. It took him over 20 minutes to fight the rip carrying the unconscious man to get back to shore. What was even more impressive was that Dad had broken his neck playing rugby only a couple of months earlier.
