Are the mods getting more severe?

Honestly, it seems that these days the mods are tightening the leash on NationStates. What with everything from Cogitation's decision to ban all nations with "ass" in the title (except for Assington, because that's a real place) to mods cracking down on "In before the lock!" in general. It just seems like mods are getting a little harsher.

I'm not saying that's a bad thing in the least. NationStates needs stricter moderation in some departments, but what about the nation of Ur an ass? We all remember the Ur trade pact, and all the good stuff that Ur did. Sure he wasn't around for the great deletion of ass nations, but he's still a valid example of how a badly-named nation can turn out good.

As for the crackdown on "In before the lock!"s, I see absolutely nothing wrong with depriving trolls of food. It just seems like yesterday's mod let that sort of thing slide more.

Players: do you notice this too?
Mods: is there some sort of secret mod meeting where you decided to all rule with an iron fist? ARE YOU ALL MAX BARRY?!?!?!111
...
*ahem*

Discuss.

In a way, they are.
See, Max Barry borrowed some cloning technology and cloned himself off a couple times. Those are the mods.
Max himself doesn't do anything, he makes his clones work.

Rather than clean the forum up of its lousiest elements, the mods do petty things and tolerate too much tattle-tailing.

It is obvious that this has gone a long way towards general's slide and the departure of many good people.

Watch this:

Ass ass ass...in before the lock...ass ass ass

Look and see how I don't get warned. Know why? Because it was relevant to the topic on hand. It's not spam. And it's not in my nation's name.

They've been more than lenient in the past, explaining very carefully that "in before the lock" was considered spam and only served to draw attention to rule-breaking threads that would otherwise just fade into oblivion. They were nice to people who were unofficially told many times not to post "in before the lock" in rule-breaking threads, but no one ever listened, and they finally got sick of no one paying attention.

And similarly, nation names and nation flags are subject to stricter restrictions than the forum, because it's been said many times that while you can debate someone voicing an unpopular belief on the forum, there's no means to disagree with a message someone can put in their nation. That's why we can have a thread discussing Nazi flags and post pictures of them all over the thread, but Nazi flags are not allowed for national flags. Some people got offended by nations with "Ass" in their titles, and the moderators decided it was no longer allowed.

if the mods were smart... they should use "In before the Lock" as an indicator that the poster thinks this tread should be locked. by constantly pushing it up on top will draw mods to it faster. Not everyone wants to report threads, while some people do go overboard with the reporting...

And Myrth... some of those threads really did deserve locking...

The thing is that nobody wants the threads at the top, for the exact reason that they are spam. That's why the mods prefer for us to not post in them and report them in Moderation, I believe.

Don't worry, Planners, the links were broken. If a nation does not exist, it brings you back to your own nation page. The links are fixed now.

My philosophy -and don't take this the wrong way- is that mods are like bees; you leave them alone, they leave you alone. You piss them off, they're all over you.

My two cents, and thank you.

Hear hear. Also, you might want to avoid the behaviors that provoke them. Like you don't spray a hose at the hive, and you don't start flame wars.

I would put good money on them not succeeding, even if they knew what they were doing already. If they are only just now buying books and starting to learn, there's almost no chance of them succeeding, I'd say.

I was going to do precisely and literally that, but then I came across words like assassin, assembly, assorted, and assyrian and said to myself: "... Okay, well duh! I should probably make a few more exceptions."

Rather than clean the forum up of its lousiest elements....
Elaborate, please.

I would need to discuss this with other Moderators before making this official policy, but I think it would be okay to use the Getting Help page if you needed to make a confidential request regarding a forum issue. You can also use irc.esper.net:#themodcave

I disagree.

What if someone posted a porno link and no one reported it AND the mods somehow never see that post? Then what?

if the mods were smart... they should use "In before the Lock" as an indicator that the poster thinks this tread should be locked. In the times I've done "in before the lock" that was one of the reasons I did so: To use that as a suggestion that the mods lock the thread in question. I've also posted a reply where I said "*cough* flamebait *cough*" and suggested an alternative that wouldn't get locked.

Actually, I think they could crack down harderat certain things like namecalling, which can get kind of brutal here on NS (not that it is worse then on other places).

Example given:
Yesterday, there was a thread where someone called a guy with dyslexia retarded.

I don't trust vBulletin to be necessarily secure. However, [violet], Salusa, and several of the moderators are pretty awesome at security, and they've already found (with the help of some of us more observant players) most of the potential holes. So bring it on. :>
