Best football (soccer) matches EVER!

Let's face it - some football matches are really bad. Hereford United vs. Leigh RMI is hardly my idea of a top football classic. There are, however, a few diamonds in the cave that is association football. What I want to know is which are your personal favourites. Some of my recent favourites are:

1) Holland 2-3 Czech Republic (Euro 2004)
2) Liverpool 5-4 Alaves (UEFA Cup Final 2000/01)
3) Chelsea 4-2 Barcelona (Champions League Round 2 2004/05)

Well there's my top three. How about you? What are your favourites?

One final reminder - this is soccer, NOT American football. I'm British, so I really don't care about the Superbowl. No offence, all you Superbowl fans. :D

Leeds 4-3 Liverpool (2001?)
Leeds 6-0 Besiktas (2001)

Leeds 3-0 Deportivo (2002)

Yes, I'm a Leeds fan. ;)

They're not too bad...well actually, that's a lie. They're my local team and look like they'll be slipping back into Division Two (or League One, as they confusingly changed it to).

That's bullsh-t and you know it.

We're 10th (Even if we do have a couple of games in hand), and we're closer to the playoffs than the relegation zone. I'm expecting automatic promotion next season.

I agree, the Holland/Czech games was the single best played game of football I've ever seen. I mean, 35 shots on goal in one game, it was outstanding.

However my favourite game was Germany 1-5 England back in 2001. It was a perfect day as I was out with a group of friends and most of us were letting off steam after just finishing a summer of night shift work. I think that England conceding the first goal actually made the match twice as good in the end.

My favourite match I've never seen was obviously the 66 world cup final. Shame I was -15 and a half back then!

I'm not 100% sure of this, so don't hold me to it. I believe that the "Match of The 20th Centruy" (official FIFA Bureaucratism) was played between Real Madrid (yay!) and... Sporting Lisbon I believe. The scoreline was something like 7-5 in Madrid's favour.

England - Brazil, World Cup 1970.
Italy - Brazil, World Cup 1982 (with Paolo Rossi).
England - Holland, Euro '96.
Germany - England, World Cup qualifier, 2001.
Internazionale - Arsenal, Champions League group phase, 2003.
Arsenal - Dynamo Kiev, Champions League group phase, 2003 (wasn't a great match, but I certainly remember it - Ashley Cole scoring in the 89th minute to keep Arsenal in the CL).
Manchester United - Exeter, FA Cup 3rd round, 2005. Mwahahahahaha!

I might do a poll to find out which is NS's favourite football match EVER. Keep those nominations coming in. Only those with more than two nominations will be considered. So far that's:

Holland 2-3 Czech Republic (Euro 2004)
Germany 1-5 England (2002 World Cup Qualifiers)

Lries, I thought leeds drew in Milan and won in Lazio, but anyway.

I agree with Holland v. the Czechs. I thought the first half on Milan Man Utd was brilliant (we went to pieces in the second and I didn't see any of the Chelsea game.) Although I was only nine at the time and I can't remember much, Man Utd's win in Turin and the two draws with Barcelona in the treble year will always stay with me.

PS Man Utd drew in Lyon

England v Germany 5-1 Qualifiers..

Liverpool v Alaves 5-4

Liverpool v Basel 3-3 (Though LIverpool got knocked out from the second round CL, however it was still a good game. We were 3-0 down during half time. And nearly snagged a fourth twice). :(

Liverpool v Fulham 4-2

Quite a few number.. but I can't seem to remember. IMO, Comeback games are always the best.

Ohhhh as Tinks here i got a special one for her! :p :D

Blackpool 0 Bradford City 3 May 1996

2-0 down from the first leg of the play offs and the Blackpool Program features directions to Wembley, cheeky gits. Manager Sam Alladyce says his players are playing for places at the Twin Towers. It is the seasider's name for sure.

Perhaps not. No one is quite sure how, or even why City turned this tie around. After 30 minutes the scores were level and looked like staying that say. Carl Shutt scored one, Des Hamilton got another to level up after around 70 minutes and, almost impossibly, Mark Stallard bashed a scrambled ball in in the last ten minutes.

(Borrowed from Boy from Brazil (http://www.boyfrombrazil.co.uk/2003/his-theset.asp) with a little editing by myself)

Bradford then went on to beat Notts County 2-0 in the playoff final...absolute class :D Oh as for the FA Cup 1911 1-0 over Newcastle in a replay! Even Bradford have won the FA Cup! :D

Neither were flukes...both teams had a work ethic and knew how to play for each other, and both had coaches who knew their teams strengths and weakness' enough to make them play to maximise their strengths and minimise their weakness'. Neither were flukes...unexpected yes, but not flukes.
