It's my senior year and I don't plan on going, partly because I can't get a Date ): and because school dances suck. Ah the story of my life.....umm anyways, how was your prom experience?

I went with a friend. I maybe saw her for 30 minutes out of the entire thing. She hung out with her friends and I hung out with my friends, and we only danced together for the slow songs. It was actually a lot of fun, not feeling obligated so much to my date.

I did. We call them Formals here.
My makeup was hideous, and my date didn't talk to me. It was great... :p

People mak it ou to be this great thing, but they tend to be a letdown. Besides, when you go to university there's a ball every year.

Nope, didn't go to mine.

I did go to my (now) ex's formal though... and being the huge antisocial dork I am, I wasn't terribly impressed. If I wanted to be served bad food while bad background music eliminated any possiblity of discussion, followed by my friends nagging me to dance... well, I'd get myself committed, because anyone who *wants* to go through that is just plain batty.

I don't plain on going to my school's formal this year either (I've done VCE over three years, so I get to not-go to TWO formals. Lucky me :p). I might just stay home and... well, post on NS probably :p

we have 'balls'

I went to my 5th form ball, the first 6th form ball, missed the second 6th form ball because I went to a concert (and then to the afterball, best of both worlds) and I went to the 7th form and leavers ball. I didn't have a date to any of them, but no one looks for 'dates to the ball' they just get pissed at a pre-ball and turn up with a bunch of friends.

Last year i went to 2 proms; my own year 11 one, and also the 6th form prom. Both were formal dress.

The year 11 one was in the town hall. The whole year (plus guests) crammed into one room with a DJ at one end, free lemonade for all. The only amusing things were a) seeing everyone looking like complete twats while wearing suits and b) when the rock 'n metal fans got bored and started a moshpit in the centre of the room, smashing into chavs left right and centre. I went with a friend and we didn't stick together after the photos had been taken.

The 6th form one was in a much larger social club, the whole 6th form (plus guests) plus a live band, bar, balconies and an abundance of free champagne for all. I turned up by myself and ended up dancing with a large group of friends (some of whom i'd only met that night) occasionally splitting up for the drunken slow dances with girls (oh the swaying :D ).

Guess which was more fun? Anyway, main point, you don't need a date, and you don't need to be a good dancer, coz as some random guy pointed out, "when everyone’s dancing everyone looks like a fool, so who cares what you look like?" We commenced with the dirty dancing... actually when we'd finished we were both told never to dance like that again to preserve the fragile minds of our companions. :D :D :D

We got breathtested at out formal. Itmight actually have been FUN if we were pissed.

Nevertheless, despite being threatened by the principal if we turned up to our farewell assembly drunk/high, many of us did manage to do just that. :D Now THAT was fun. :D

We had a Debutante Ball thing in year 11, which I didn't go to, because I couldn't be bothered asking anyone to be my partner (Okay, okay, it was the fear of rejection :p) and I can't dance.

We had a Formal the next year, and I went to that. I won the "Most likely to end up in jail" award, but I wasn't there when my name was called, because I was out front trying to get, uh...stuff. :p

I hadn't planned on going to mine, but a friend was determined to go and he asked out this chick who didn't want to go with him because she was hoping I'd ask her. She got tired of waiting for me to figure that out and pushed the issue.

We ended up dating for a while. The chick my friend got to go with him I dated a few years later. Makes me either sound pimper than I really am or lame or both. Not sure.

Anyway...

Ours was on a riverboat. There was dinner served in the hold on picnic tables with paper plates. I sat across from a guy who had a nickname for me that implied halucinagen(sp) usage. (something I didn't do until much later) It was dry chicken and potato salad.

The dance floor was very tiny. Worked for me, since I've never been much of a dancer.

The pictures where taken on the bow of the boat in the nighttime delta breeze. Breeze is euphomistic. Money spent on hair was wasted and the comb provided was about as effective as Buster Keaton trying to pick up his hat.

Being the Sacramento delta we passed the homeless living on the banks of the river and where buzzed the entire time by shirtless dudes in one of those speed boats thats just a sliver and a blown V8.

The planning comitee f'd up the reservation and only rented the boat for I think 2 hours instead of 3. Everyone sat in the muddy bank waiting for their limos to come back-well, not me. I drove my moms Caddy.

I took her to this jazz club after that. In front of the club I parked and we made out a little only to be interupted by the priest whose yard I had inadvertantly parked in.

I tried to talk the band into playing Prelude to a Kiss and the dude kept sayin' he didn't know the song because of the generation gap between us. Except he was in his sixties and I was a teen, and it's a Duke Ellington song....I had caught him a few liquid breaks too late. I had brought my sax on the off chance that I could have talked him into letting me sit in to play the song. Obviously that didn't work out.

Thing is, it was a comedy of ridiculous things that happened, but I still remember it. I can still tell that story sixteen years later. If I concentrate I can remember the feel of the lipstick when we kissed (and the flush of embarasment when the priest stopped us). It was something I did that I can never do again.

It didn't mean the things that it was supposed to mean, but nothing in high school ever really did. It was an experience. I'd always rather have an experience than none at all.

Wouldn't have said that if you'd asked me then.

I went to a fairly liberal school, where they expected everyone to turn up at least a little bit drunk. Our school is no longer welcome in the place where we had our 7th form ball, as 3 people threw up, one who snuck into the kitchen and did it all over the dishes, one who did it at the bar where they served us chippies and coke, and one on the back of their highly expensive curtains. The principal made a formal statement before every ball that the school did not condone afterballs, and did not have anything to do with them. That way, they weren't responsible for us if we all got arrested.

Our teachers were laid back, it was the principal who had a pole up his arse. I remember once in maths we all just walked in, put down our bags and walked out... :p Good old Mr. Alder didn't complain either. And my school was a very strange environment. It's the most academically selective school in NSW, yet the people varied anywhere between supernerdy and people who turned up to school drunk on a daily basis...

I have a vague recollection of going to a hardcore gig instead, although this may be wishful thinking - it would after all have been 16 or so years ago - I can, however, certainly say that I didn't go to any sixth form formal.

EDIT: in fact, come to think of it, the only formal I have ever been to was one we held for the workers in the anarchist collective I was part of. Plenty of gorgeous ballgowns, sparkling tiaras, plunging necklines and immaculate coiffure. The ladies also dressed up as well.

And I wasn't a popular person, and the awards were chosen by vote (which, again, I wasn't there for :p) So i'm still rather mystified. Ah well. It looks good in my resume. :D

I went to a co-ed public high school, one of only two in the wider region without a uniform, and one of probably less than 10 in the country. We were widely known as a 'stoner school' although quite a few kids who were constantly in trouble in their early years managed to make it through and pass their final year. It was weird too because we were a decile 10 school, implying that the surrounding areas were wealthy.

I went to Prom with a German foreign exchange student that my friends hooked me up with on a blind date. It turns out that she was very attractive, though somewhat shy. We road in a limo (my first time in one) and went out to eat before heading to the ballroom at a hotel. I had a lot of fun, and my friends finally got to see that I actually can dance. I managed to be quite limber despite my recent knee injury. :)

It was 1991.

My girlfriend of three years and I had broken up three months before the prom, so I went with a friend of my sisters.

I don't like dancing much. There was no booze at the prom per se. I had an OK time at the time tho, as about 85% of the class was there and we were all (at least at a basic level) friends. Sure there were the cliques, but I could walk up to anybody and talk to them.

Anyway, that was 14 years ago now. Time moves on. And I am very happy I went. You know why? Because it's easy to be jaded. It's easy to not care or to just brush things off. But memories of things we've done are the spice of life.

So go. I say go. If only for your future self. Believe it or not, you may be even more enlightened in the future. :D

Actually, it's not so bad. If you'll suffer me, I have a couple of pointers:

1) Go get a 4 year degree right out of highschool. Take it seriously, studying from 9-5. You'll get a good job.

2) When you discover alcohol and midnight diner runs, remember that your metabolism will probably start to slow around 20-23.

3) Take a vacation every year one you start working. Even if it's only for a 4 day weekend, and there are 4 of you sharing a room at the Motel 6.

Went to my prom. Why? Because I was part of the prom committee. Had a Mix Chinese Indian girl as a date. Was very boring honestly. We expected the crowd reaction to be better especially the dance. The food was super horrible. And the best part about the prom was during the photoshoot and sitting around the tables talking rubbish.

At the end of the prom, we nearly had a fistfight with the bouncers my friend hired. He got some Gang members to be the bouncers (idiot). And they thought we were just young snots and demanded for more money than we initially hired them for. But my friend offered to pay them off. We don't want trouble with these guys.

The best part.. was after the ball. After I dropped my date off, me and my friend went illegal racing down the highway at 100mph.

------------------

Even if you don't have a date.. just go for the experience man, don't need a tux and shit, just go with shirt and long pants.. Unless you have to pay..

I went to my prom (even got what I wore in the pic thread - go kilts) though I don't think anybody turned up with a date... People just turned up in groups of five or ten and waited for the food to be served. After that there was a lot of group photography which I ended up looking ever so slightly foolish in. Especially the picture taken from an "alternative"* angle. There was some dancing, but about half the people didn't bother, I was one of that half. I just socialised with whoeever I hadn't talked to for the last five minutes and watched everyone get slowly more inebriated. (I'm a boring teetotaler) In the end I left about midnight because I couldn't be bothered going on the Glasgow pub tourbus.

*Read: The alternative angle was facing up the way, taken from inside my kilt. It turned out sickeningly well.

Well it looks like 2 weeks from now, I will be spending another fascinating night with Counterstrike......god I'm lonely....err anymore experiences?

I hadn't been planning on going because I broke up with my bf of 2 years who left me for one of my best friends. A few months after that happened, relations got sour with nearly the rest of my grade. So no, I wasn't planning on going.

Then a friend asked me two weeks before prom. I said yes, and he practically took it as an invitation into my bed. The actual prom was kind of boring, though one of the few times I got to dance the way I want to.

If you can go for free, or because the school is paying for it, or because you've paid dues, go. Just for the hell of it. You don't have to stay, you really don't have to dress up too nice if you don't care. And dates are over-rated.

I went to my senior prom.

I like to dance though and especially to get dandied up so I had multiple compelling interests in the matter.

At my school we had a 'Summer Ball.' Thing was, Lower VIth (Juniors for ye Americans), Upper VIth (seniors), parents and teachers could all go, with UVIth half price tickets for them and a 'partner.' So it was a pretty unpressured affair with only half the girls with dates if that. Fun to ply the adults with wine and get them ever so slightly tipsy :D

Fuck prom. I'm not gonna go when we have it. Formal wear sucks ass, plus it'll just be filled with drunk people freaking. I'll pass.

Didn't go to a school dance, didn't go to graduation, didn't have my photo anywhere in the yearbook.
You're lucky.

I don't go to dances.
1) I don't dance
2) I don't wear dresses
3) I don't wear makeup
4) I don't wear uncomfortable shoes
5) I can't stand around and eat food at home. For free.

The semiformal is actually going on right now. It started about.. an hour and twenty minutes ago, I believe. Obviously I'm not there. All but maybe one or two of my friends are there but I'm still not going. Because of the reasons above and plus.. I don't belong there. Its not what I do.

I didn't go to my prom. But i flew down to Florida to go to my girlfreind's prom.
The prom itself sucked, but I was more then happy to spend time with her.

In fact, the only thing I paid for in the entire prom experiance, was the prom tickets.
I got free flight, free food/lodging, free trnasportation, and my mom paid my tux.
Of course, when I got back I saw no reason to go to my school prom (Which was a month later).

Sounds like me, except my photo was in the previous year's yearbook because of the Dungeons and Dragons club I had wandered myself into.

Other then that, it's like I never existed to that school.

I went to my prom. Stayed for a couple of hours, danced a few dances, then retreated back to a house party where I got stoned and drunk agianst school directive.

It was fun while it lasted, but damn, it's not fun sitting in a hot gym for four hours with a bunch of very bright lights pointed straight at you while listening to boring guest speakers and a boring validictorian speak while you're hungover and burnt out. Compounded by the very warm grad mumus (as some of us liked to call our graduation attire).

My Senior prom. Ah yes. It was 1961 and I went to the prom with my girlfriend Jerry. After the prom, a group of us went to dinner at a fantastic restaurant that had a band and dance floor. We then went to my house; Jerry lived about 40 miles away so she was staying there, to change clothes. Then off to a party at Bob's house until dawn. Wonderful night.

I didn't attend my senior prom because the person I wanted to go with didn't ask me, and the people that did ask me I just didn't want to go with them.

I went to the drive-in movie instead - with several of my cousins and a friend of theirs - who I ended up marrying.

Don't give up yet, Imperial Guard, the girl of your dreams may ask you yet.
The girl of my dreams already has a bf. ): It doesn't help that I can't maintain my usual calm and cool composure when I'm talking to girls I like....

Eventually you'll get in a relationship, and it will eventually fall apart.

One important lesson from it though is that girls and women are nothing to become nervous about, they're not mystical magical beings.

Which said, they can be difficult to understand, but dont let that deter you.

It's my senior year and I don't plan on going, partly because I can't get a Date ): and because school dances suck. Ah the story of my life.....umm anyways, how was your prom experience?

Don't be soft. Go anyway with some friends. Get drunk, have a good time. Don't bow to peer pressure. &ct.

I went to prom, but with low expectations (everyone always complains about every single thing). But I actually had a lot of fun. I had a date, but my buddy went solo. He had a blast, he said it was better to dance with anyone and everyone istead of having obligations to your partner. I say, try it, You never know. If you get nothing else out of it, at least you can say you went. Plus, prom is really what you make of it; if you go expecting not to like it, you probably won't. Go there intending to have fun and do whatever you want, you'll probably have a good time.

I don't even really like to dance (very bad at it), but I still had a good time.

I went to my prom. I didn't have a date, but most of my friends didn't either, so we hung out together and had fun. My best friend went with my cousin, but they each wanted to hang out with their own friends and another friend went with a guy who also happened to be our friend. One other friend went out with the guy she had been living with for years, they both hung out with us. I don't normally like school dances either. The only other high school dance i had been to was the first one of grade 8. It was my first high school dance, i went more for the experience than anything else. It was fun too, my friends and i hung out together and had a good time. I have never felt the pressure to have a date, it was never awkward for me.

I went to my senior prom with a fellow geek. It wasn't that great, but we had tons of fun afterwards. A bunch of us got drunk ( I was old enough to buy, drinking age was 18 then) and went to see Rocky Horror.

My junior prom I missed. I already had a date ( he was such a hottie, I thought he was out of my league) but a couple of weeks before that we ended up moving. My parents didn't tell my until the last minute. I was so pissed, that was the only school I went to that I hung out with the popular kids.

I did go to our homecoming dance that year. There were more guys than girls in our little clique, so to make sure no one was dateless we went as a group. The dance was a bore, but we went outside and drank a couple of bottles of vodka. It was loads more fun after that. There were ten of us, but only three girls. I've always had more guy friends than girls.

My eldest sister, Samantha, went for about an hour, then skipped off to (I think) a Smash Mouth concert. Kitty went to hers for about 5 minutes, then hauled her boyfriend to a Black-eyed-peas concert.

I intended to keep up the family tradition (Offspring, if you must know...) but the school chose a science museum for my senior prom, and I broke into all the exhibits and spent quite a while playing Gauntlet & Pac-man. My "date," who knew I had no interest whatsoever in her gender but had been my close friend for six years, shared my bottle of Jack while beating the (fertilizer) out of my ex-stalkee's little brother. I drove her home, snuck into the after-party (by apologizing for several things I hadn't done and loudly denying other things nobody had accused me of while walking right past the line for cash-collection line), and can remember very little else.

My friends who went along with my original plan said "it was fun."

Heck no, didn't go. Me and two of my best friends stayed over at each other's houses, watched movies, went to Disneyland, drove around, went out to eat, had a few illegal drinks, watched some porn for the first time--damn, we had a hell of a good weekend! Screw the prom!
Although we did help one of our friends out, she wasn't allowed to go so we sneaked her out and took her to my place so she could get dressed, and gave her a ride there and back etc. That was cool.

I went to my prom, It sucked. I spent $200 on my date, only to have her break up with me a week before the prom. I couldn't get anyone else to go. So I went alone. Like I said, it sucked. But Karma kicked ass. Her senior prom was next year, and the same thing happened to her. Her boyfriend that year broke up with her a week before the prom and she was forced to go alone. So I guess it all worked out at the end.

If I ever have children, I will recommend they do not go to the prom. I'd take them to a concert of their favorite band, singer etc.

I didn't go to my senior prom. I was out of town that weekend, taking entrance exams at a university...so I had no option.

Although I apparently didn't miss much...I'm told the band sucked donkey balls. :p

skipped junior, but I went to senior. To this day, I don't know how to dance. It was so much fun, I was actually suprised(the prom, not dancing).

Not to mention I may be in love with the girl I went with. But she's on the other side of the country now. :(

By the way, I think the funniest chat/forum post ever would be: "Hey, is anyone here from Pennsylvania? Do you know Kimmy?"
