Grelaxians have invaded Earth, butchering millions. There favorite sport is human melting and they love to eat fried babies. Evil, evil aliens. You, like most adult humans, are in the world military, fighting the invaders.
On the battlefield your unit is pinned down by withering alien plasma fire. Your unit has tried to take out the alien position to no avail. Your immediate leader decides to withdrawl. He taps you on the shoulder and orders you to run from the position to another piece of cover. You know if you step out of your present postion you are dead. You also know he wants you to do this in order to draw fire so that the rest of the unit can get away. It was a random choice by him. If you refuse he may shoot you.

What do you do? Follow orders and die so they can get away or refuse to follow orders knowing if you do you will die.

I hope I'd run, but I guess I won't really know until I was in that position.

If you're gonna die anyway, you might as well die a hero.

If I'm going to die, I'd like to at least make a difference to some people. If my commanding officer just shoots me for disobeying, then that's a meaningless death.

I guess...

Well I don't see the point in just getting shot for insubordination. If I get killed like that, then someone else still has to die to draw the fire away from the unit, and two people die. If I'm going to die no matter what, I'd like to save at least one person's life.

Yes...Save as many as possible. You first though ;), if you can.

As a soldier, I follow all lawful orders. This is a lawful order. Ergo, I will follow it.

Well I doubt I'm courageous enough to volunteer to do that, but if I'm presented with the options of dying or dying heroicly, I'll pick the latter.

As would anyone, I hope.

Question. Would me charging the alien postion instead of simply running achieve the same result (giving the rest of my unit the time to retreat)? If so I'd try to take one or two of the bastards with me. If charging would not give my unit enough time I'd do as ordered and simply run out and draw fire.

I'd most likely see if my unit had a heavy weapon like a machine gun or a grenade launcher I could use and find the opposite direction the unit will run so I can basicly run to the opposite of the unit while firing with my said weapon and posibly take down afew little bastards while my unit runs for it and posibly even survive even though I highly doubt I would.
