What exactly is a Troll and how does one avoid them?

A troll is someone who starts or enters a thread with an stupidly controversial comment just to generate a response. It's attention seeking of the lowest order.

Example - declaring satanism to be the one true faith on a christian board just to see the reaction.

Flamers are those who indulge in passionate (firey) attacks on those whose views they do not agree with. They tend to have weak arguments and make up for them with random insults and posturing.

To avoid them? Pull out your phoneline :D. Much like STDS these creatures are everywhere.

ignore em. if they only want to see the response (trolls), don't give em one and they'll leave. flamers, ignore the hatred spewing from their keyboards and just argue back methodically and rationally - eventually you'll kick their metaphorical teeth in and they'll leave too :)

Stay out of any conversation about religion or American politics that is over 5 pages.

I will say that our best trolls are exceptional at humorous conversation.

i cant bealive people would even bother to talk to trolls or flammers
i am newer to nation states i am usaly on then off than on than off its been about a year i just never knew these terms you all have been very helpful

There should be a caveat here:

It's only trolling if done deliberately to provoke a reaction. There are some folks who are just regular misguided, uneducated individuals with bad taste and worse spelling. It is not with malice that they spread their venomous screedos of stupidity, but rather with a sort of innocent and childlike ignorance. Then there are some other people who are just naturally assholes, through and through. They provoke because it is their nature. Being angry at these people is like hating a fish for its scales, or a bee for stinging. So please, be tolerant and understanding of these jerks and idiots. Lord knows I try. It is my daily burden.

Trolls are mythical creatures that vary greatly in size, color, and other characteristics. They usually live in caves, underground, or under bridges.

If you see something that fits this description under a bridge, it is probably a troll:

There are some folks on here that are regularly misguided, uneducated, have bad taste, or are assholes?
