Is God Male or Female and Why?

[NS]Ein Deutscher

Some people claim that god is female. Yet I've never seen any mention of god in the bible being a woman or that Adam (who was created in the image of god) was a woman ;)

So what do you think - is god (if "it" exists) male or female and if you think it is female, why do you think so?

I wouldn't take the bible as a source of ANYTHING gender-neutral, I mean, women are basically objects.

I don't believe in a god, but if I did it would be sexless. Maybe you should add that as an option in your poll?

God is neither, since we are made in his image.

Since we are male and female, it would stand to reason that so is God.

God has never been mentioned as sexless (at least to my knowledge), thus I limited the poll to the 2 obvious choices. Sexless is the easy way out and would probably get a lot of clicks. Thus I left it out. I'd like to stick to the traditional choices which have their respective lobbies.

Females (Eve) was created out of Adam, thus Eve is not made in the image of God. According to the Bible.

your knowledge is woefully incomplete, if that is the case. God is referred to as genderless by numerous religious groups, and is referred to as both male and female by many others.

I'm puzzled by this. If you stick to a literal interpretation of the Bible or the Koran, you're pretty much constrained to a male God. On a modern interpretation of paganism, you've got the Mother Goddess. But in eastern religions and less literal interpreations of western religions, you've either got both genders represented in God or neither.

Seems to me you're artificially limiting the parameters of the discussion.

Uh huh. Right. If God were female she would get pissed off and destroy the universe once a month. Adam's member would have hung down to his knees, and the fig leaves would hve been designer. The universe would have to be completely rearranged at least once a year. All toilet seats would be permanently in the "down" position. Men would have been designed to be more sensitive and would cry over romantic movies. And the Bible would read like a romance novel. :D

So, anyone?

God would have to be genderless. If He made Adam in His image, and Adam was the only one of his kind...why would Adam need juevos? He wouldn't have had the specialized sex organs prior to the creation of Eve, because there would be no use for them, much the same as how neither he nor Eve would, logically, have had a belly-button. 'Course, I can't say I believe in either one of them, because their whole story reads more like a heavily summarized 'history of humanity,' rather than our literal origins. But that's another post for another time.

What defines a male, primarily, is whether or not one has juevos and a ding-a-ling. Call me crazy, but I doubt God's packing. He can certainly be masculine, but that doesn't make Him male, not in the normal sense.

As to the fact that God's called 'He' throughout the Bible, that's a very, very long book. 'She' would have been an extra letter every time they could've said 'He' (Captain Obvious, to the rescue!), and with all the references they make to God, it would've been a pain in the arse to re-write. Keep in mind, after all, that books were copied by hand back then. And, while 'It' would have been shortest and least confusing, certainly, 'It' is also very impersonal. It becomes difficult to think of God as a person, rather than a giant menacing force, if God is simply called 'It'. Thus, while 'He' may not be 100% accurate, it's the logical choice, as males were the ones with power, and females were subservient to them, if I remember right.

*shrug* S'not as though the gender makes a difference, though, so it's a bit trivial.

That doesn't make sense. Adam wouldn't have eggs. I'm thinking "in Adam's image" simply mean Eve was created for Adam. As for Eve being created, it's more likely for a male to be created from a female than vise versa. Remember? We all began life as a girl?

In Bible there two stories about the creation of humanity, both are different. In the first one Adam is created in the image of God, and then Eve is created from one of Adams rips. This means that Eve is in effect taken out of Adam, and thus the first Adam would necessarily have had to incorporate both the masculine and the feminine. Since such an Adam was created in the image of God, it must be concluded that God must be similar to the first Adam.
This story is follows by yet another creation story, in which Adam and Eve is both created simultaneously and in the image of God. Again God is both masculine and feminine.
My conclusion is thus that a literal reading of Genesis, would make the Christian God into a creature that was both masculine and feminine. There is of course other ways to read this story, one of them is to look at from a historical perspective (making God a man) and another is to look at what the names Adam and Eve really means (making Genesis into a highly allegorical story). But that is another debate altogether.

Now it is still true that God is primarily mentioned in masculine terms throughout the Bible, but this can easily be seen as titles describing functions. God is then called farther, because it describes God in the function of ruler rather than its position as the universal womb. This could also explain, why the original word behind the holy spirit is supposed to be a feminine word.
If I remember correctly, then it is also typical to see God and the Angels as being both masculine and feminine in Jewish literature. Something that would support the validity of my hypothesis.
Anyway I did not vote, since I did not agree with any of the options.

God is neither, yet God is both. However, for simplicity sake, I will refer to God as he.
Now, yes Adam was made in the image of God, and Eve was made out of Adam, but when following the line, it would make sence that eve is still in the image of God. If she is out of Adam, who is made in the image of God, then eve would not have changed much from the image either, considering how well male and female pare up.

But then again, who is to say "made in the image of God" refers to the phisical in the first place? Perhaps it is refering to our ability to think for ourselves, to be able to make decisions on our own? When looking at the passages, there is nothing to say that God phisically manifested himself in any occasion other than in Jesus.

Granted the bible refers to God as "God the father", but one must remember the custom of the time, when all children were credited to the fathers line, never the mothers. It was the male who was the creator of the family line, thus "God the father"

In Christian mythology, definitely, as it had to be skewed for Jesus/Mithra, as well as the male hierarchy.

In Jewish mythology, no. Yahweh is many things, as the Torah was a compilation work (a literal book of fairy tales and parables, if you will). In Bereshit it can be insinuated on some occasions that Yahweh is asexual. In others, hemaphroditic. But as a whole, yes, male, as that does go with the whole antiquated male social hierarchy.

I think that there is no specific gender to god. our language has an inherent male bias to pronoun, but characteristics of god (biblical) leave it up in the air. any attempt to anthopomophize is limiting.

I belive that God is neither male nor female. Yes in the Bible it dose refer to him as "He" alot but the Bible also states that God created Man (the temonolgy used as in race which includes both males and females) in his own image. I belive he took qualities of himself and divided them to show the difference of man and woman. As the the Bible using the term "He" males have been the domninant gender since the beginning therfore they probably wish to show God's dominance over his children.

Okay, I voted female for several reasons:

1) God is the creator, which is, in nature the female's role. Man cannot create life, man can only create by destroying first (cutting down trees to make a house and such).
2) It would explain the mood swing. OT God is vengeful, and frankly, a bitch. (PMS). NT God is all about acceptance and love.
3) If God was male, the penis would have been a lot better designed... Also, if God is male, why did he load our asses with hair.
Re: 2) God lives forever, or at least billions of years, so who are we to say that the menstral cycle runs on months, maybe it runs on millenia for god, who knows.
Re: A previous comment)Someone said that if God was female, then Adam would have a huge penis. Frankly, I think you're being a little ignorant about what women want. Very true - Genesis explicitly states, at one point, that male and female were created at the same time, and BOTH in 'his' image.

People cannot help writing from experience... people write what they know, and they colour their stories with their own perceptions.

Thus - the Bible, being written by men, referes to god as male.
