Spin, Spin, and More Spin

I have seen people quote this and that and the other thing from sources who are, to put it kindly, partial to certian viewpoints. Is it possible to cut through this spin and use the truth and discuss that?

The way to do it is to spin really fast in the other direction, and the two spins should cancel each other out if you do it right.

Tough call.

Most of us seem to have a tendency to form positions on certain subjects based on our own prejudices. It does then become very easy to fall into the trap of only believing "evidence" that supports our belief.

What is that saying? "There are lies, damned lies and then there are statistics"?

I don't think that anyone here (apart from the trolls of course) would honestly post stuff they knew to be false in order to support an opinion. However, we see long arguments all the time where people throw "facts" back and forth.

Human nature perhaps?

It makes sense to me because I do not believe in the concept of "absolute" truth or morality so I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with me because I accept that my truth may not be their truth.

I only get frustrated in debates/arguments when the person with a counter-opinion to my own does not acknowledge any of the points I make or picks out only a couple to defend.

I'm sorry.... Did you have a specific issue in mind? ...or are you speaking generally?

Unfortunately, most sources are biased at least to some degree. It's difficult for people to agree on what's true. Some people have disagreements over what happened 5 minutes ago. The best you can do is try to obtain information on the same subject from multiple sources and determine what the differences in opinion are.

I am a subjectivist, it just ruins debate when people are too bias and arrogant. Also, I was saying in general.

Perhaps you can explain how those posts are "subjective" and not you tootin' your own horn?

That was humour.
On top of that, that post wasn't even in a serious debate...

That had nothing to do with him. What is called a liberal in the US isn't all that liberal in the view of the UK.

That seemed to be a statement of fact...

I don't see where you're getting this "tooting his own horn" from, except a possible misunderstanding of the first post.

If we want people to agree with us one way is to tell 'em what they want to here. We may as well 'cos they mostly here what they want anyway

This thread has perfect examples.

Does anyone want a burger?

Obviously hungry and only wants to hear about food.

Ein Deutscher']With grilled chicken meat?

The same but a finicky eater.

:D

A physicist with a very practical solution.

What you should have said is:

"I'm partial to straight forward food without garnish myself. You know what your eating then, right, and discussions over dinner are'nt hampered by fiddley eating procedures and complicated relative rotational movement of condiments round the table. "

That way there's interesting bits for more of your readers.

Hmmm. That question sounds too simple.

Cut the spin and say what you mean. :p
