My mother .... (good vibes request)

Keruvalia
11-03-2005, 03:29
I just got off the phone and my mother has had a stroke. She's only 52! Granted, she's been a sort of rebel hippie her whole life and can't really claim "clean livin'" any more than I can, but geeze ... 52!

I'm told she's doing just fine, but as her son, I feel I need to go pester her and clean her kitchen and make sure she's eating ok and all of that for a few days. I've called my principal and have taken the next week off of work, but I'm posting this here for a couple of reasons:

1] Mom doesn't have cable internet. Hell ... she doesn't even have a computer! I will be taking my laptop and using her phone-line, but NS sucks on dial-up, so my time here will be sparse.

2] Good vibes, prayers, light a match, shake a tamborine, light a fart, or do whatever it is you do whenever you want to send happy warm fuzzies to someone. Her name is Christa Washington - for you Druid and/or Wiccan types out there who do the numerology and automated writing and whatnot. I'm indifferent to your religion, but anything helps. (Yes, STFU atheists, I am aware of medical science and she has seen a doctor and he has seen her).

That's it.

I'm packing some things and will leave in an hour or so to get to her house and make sure it's cleaned up and whatnot for her discharge from hospital in the morning.

Oy. While you're praying for her ... throw a little my way too.

ttyl,

James

i've put a large rainbow envelop of good vibes in the fairy mail for her this very minute, so the vibes should arive early tomorrow. unless, of course, those lazy gnome delivery boys are on strike again...

seriously, though, i joke to alleviate tension. my own mom (who is also 52) recently discovered that she has a brain tumor, so i am really wound tight when it comes to mothers and brain-related ailments. i really hope everything works out for your mother. it's great to hear that you are being so dedicated...it's a sad fact that not all kids would be so caring for an ill parent. fortunately, it sounds like your mom already has a big pile of good Keruvalia mojo.

How major was the stroke?

My 80yr old grandmother has survived two minor strokes with flying colours. She had to modify her diet and exercise the affected limbs regularly to regain strength and use but she's doing pretty well for her age.

Don't believe a doctor if they say that she'll never regain the use of a limb if it appears paralysed by the stroke. My grandmother got told she'd never use her left arm again... but with several weeks of intensive treatments from a physiotherapist and regular exercising it is back to being as good as it ever was (which wasn't fantastic but she is 80, what can you expect?).

Just hang in there and be supportive. Often stroke victims find the hardest thing to cope with is the lifestyle changes (no drinking, smoking, etc). Be prepared to support her with that stuff.

Well, my stuff is packed up for a few days of leave and I decided I'd sit for a little on NS and chat with some folks here and there - oh, come on, you're all as addicted as I am and she won't be out of hospital until tomorrow morning.

Just wanted to extend some thanks to folks who've been supportive. You'll all get an extra orange in your Xmas stocking this year. :D

Anyway, got a T-gram that asked: My mother is Jewish. (I answered the TG, but I'll just put it up here in case anyone else asks) She's ... shall we say ... mildly observant. You've heard of Christmas and Easter Catholics? My mother is a Passover and Hanukkah Jew. :D

To Spoon Endings: I lost my dad to cancer. I know what that's like. I shall recite an extra salat for you in the morning.

Thanks again all.

Dear Lord, watch over Christa and James. Grant that Christa will make a quick and rapid recovery. Impart unto her Your divine wisdom that she might take better care of herself. Also grant James the strength of body and heart to see his mother through her recovery. We ask this through Our Lord, Jesus Chirst. Amen.

I'm sorry if the "take better care of herself" sounds like a cheap shot... that is not my intention... but you, yourself, did admit that she can't claim "clean living". It is good to ask the Lord to help solve a problem, but it is also good to ask the Lord to help someone learn to avoid a problem ahead of time.

Oy ... knowing her ... she'll get home and try to be doing stuff within 10 minutes. She'll want to clean, she'll want to cook. She'll see that I'm there and want to do all this shtuss.

I'll have to remind her every 10 minutes about how she carried me for 9 months and changed my diapers and all of that (yeah, Jewish guilt runs deep - we nearly rival Catholics!) and she'll shrug and say, "So where's your brother, then?"

Yes, I could write a book on Jewish Mothers.

Anyway, it will be trying for both of us for a little while. She's going to have to accept being taken care of and that's that! She won't like it, though. ;)

Best wishes to you and your mother. I feel sure she'll make a good recovery, but I'm sure you're worried. I just spent the last two days at my mom's and shuttling her between doctors, so I know it can be stressful. Strokes have very good recovery rates these days, so try not to worry too much. Though I know that's hard. You have my fervent hope that you will both be better soon. Affectionately, Paige.

Oy .. no kiddin' ... thank Allah for medical science! I have a feeling she'll be ok, too, but I have to go be a doting son a little, ya know? I mean .. .c'mon ... I have kids of my own now. I see what a woman goes through carrying a person in their womb! I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

So, knowing she did that for me, I will be off soon to go try to make up for just a little of the pain.

Of course, Gina has already said, "Why don't you just tell her to move in here with us?" Something I may very well do. I have an extra room and all.

I'd live with my mother if she really neede it, but we'd probably do each other in. Thank heaven she lives next door to her sister. But her sister has epilepsy, so she can't drive. They totally drive each other nuts. But I know if she wasn't around, I'm the only one of the kids that would take mom in.
I'm so glad your wife is in favor of the idea. But your mother probably wants to maintain her independence as long as possible, I know mine does.

Ugh! My mother *hates* doctors. She'd have been content to just die in her garden, but a neighbor took her to hospital.

My mother was raised by a Holocaust survivor and, well, that means she was raised to simply accept her lot in life and never strive for anything better. (Other children of survivors will understand) So a stroke? Oh well .. time to go! Unfortunately, she has people like me saying, "Ermmmm NO!". :D

Doctor Jim-
I am going to use my amazing positive thinking powers to make your mothers recovery go as well as my moms did. she had a stroke at 46, and another at 53. she lost sight in one eye for a whole year, and had trouble with her whole right side, but as another poster on here said- she worked real hard, with diet, and excercise, and YOGA (tell your mom) and made a full come back to her original self. I know the same thing will happen with your mom. Best Wishes!- You Know Who
