doing research for my college paper... do you think media violence (video games, TV, movies) is directly responsible for violence in children, or is it just one of many factors? Or does it have no affect whatsoever on children?

You should look at cases of mimicry. For older kids, and for general connections between games and violence, I think this is mostly a crock of shit. Doom did not encourage the Columbine kids to go on their rampage. GTA doesn't encourage bank robbers. I played a little Burnout yesterday and I didn't flip my car on the way to work.

But when you look at young kids doing exactly the same stuff they see (like the "backyard wrestling" flapdoodle), it gets a little harder to explain away. Sure, the kids might dumb and/or suggestible and/or have other traits that would probably have taken them out of the gene pool, but in such cases, the media does contribute.

Try
"Moving Experiences - Understanding Television's Influences and Effects" by David Gauntlett, Acamedia Research Monograph 13, 1995

It might give you some more data.

You know what causes violence, people being stupid and not thinking.
Violence is human nature though, and u won't eliminate it completely.

I heard this japanese study that showed broght light on video game causing violence. They "proved" that violence in games doesn't cause violence...
The games themselfs cause violence...

BTW I'm not so sure about the study?!?!?!!

it's a factor. The biggest influence on children are their parents or a significant adult who can teach them the right way to live. Children learn by mimicing the adults in their lives. If you don't talk to them about what they are watching or playing and that it is wring to randomly kill or maim then they "might" think it's OK.

It depends on the person, really. To generalize that all children are just one of those choices is silly, it CAN be a factor.
However, I THINK more children were involved in gangs and violence before the TV was created, so...

I'm thankful for all the good input i've had so far, but my paper is a ways off... and i'd like to hear some more opinions... thanks

I think it may be a factor but I don't think that means anything needs changing.

It can actually put people off violence by showing it in it's true form-a horrible thing that doesn't solve problems.

Yes, people have got ideas from films or games or whatever but if they hadn't got the idea from the film they would still have those violent urges and would have done something just as bad. They didn't watch the film and suddenly go 'hey, that looks fun', they most probably just watched it and used it.

Everyone watches violence in films but a very small percent would ever carry out such violent acts. People can enjoy violence in a film but that does not equal them enjoying being violent themselves.

I really think it's just a cop-out, blaming the problems with human nature on films. There has always been violence and films or games won't change that significantly if at all.

As long as it isn't glorified I see nothing wrong with violence in a film.

To be honest it sounds alot like rock metal music. I mean I listen to alot of Iron Maiden GnR etc but I (like alot of other fans) am not violent generally but I'll still jump in mosh pits at concerts.
Explain that and you'll probably find the answear to video game violence

I sincerely believe that media violence can (and usually does) have an affect on violence in children but I believe it's impact can not be measured simply.

If a kid watches violence on tv, etc. a lot and never hears role models or parents analyzing it or commenting on it and there is no one to reinforce non-violent behavior in the child's life - then I believe it can have a great impact.

I don't think violence on tv, etc. is essentially bad and should be banned or anything... but it needs to be discussed and put into context and not taken at face value.

If you want info on gender stereotypes in the media (discusses violence) a very good (and eye opening source) are the:Killing Us Sofly series of videos (http://www.mediaed.org/videos/MediaGenderAndDiversity/KillingUsSoftly3)

One of many factors.

Parents shouldn't raise their kids on TV.

Nah, computer games have no effect on the young. I mean come on, if the games I used to play as a kid had affected us we'd all be like PacMan, wandering around aimlessly in the dark listening to strange jumpy music, munching pills and being chased by ghosts...erm! ;)

lol... sounds like fun... or we'd all think we were little italian people thinking we could defeat enemies simply by jumping on top of them, and that we could move through the world using conveniently located green pipes...

Even if the two conditions turned out to be correlated, observation of media violence and violent tendencies, how would you determine causation? Would it be the case that media violence engendered violent tendencies or would it be the case that children with violent tendencies were attracted to certain kinds of media content?

That is exactly what i am looking into through my research... I feel that it does have an effect, but thaat it plays on violent tendencies that children already have learned...

Of course Media Violence has a huge impact! It's full of movement, colours and interesting sounds. If you want proof that the media has a huge influence on you then look at the vast sums spent on advertising and researching adverts.
