Apartheid? A Quick Question

This isn't intended to be a discussion/debate on the pros/cons, and what not of apartheid (although you can make it one, if you'd like). I just had a quick question. How is the word itself pronounced? Usually, I hear it pronounced as apart-tide; however, the book I'm reading now, entitled Nelson Mandela: The Man and His Movement by Mary Benson, says it is pronounced apart-hate. So, I was wondering...what is the correct pronunciation?
I always went with tide, but hate does seem more appropriate somehow...

I think the difference is actually a matter of pronounciation...
Although I think the apart-hate thing is a play on words.
