There have been many a claim to where the sunken city lies.

here is a decent site for it.

http://members.aol.com/jimb3d/myth/atlantis.html

I may do a myths thread every so often.

One of the more interesting theories is that it lies beneath Antartica...or that it was once Britain!

Here's a myth: Mesopotamia was not the first civilization. In school, that's what they taught us.

Now they think Atlantis was the ancient Minoan civilization, given a few translation error assumptions

And one of the more correct theories is that it only existed in Plato's mind.

Hmm? I dunno, It's highly probable that there are whole land masses below the ocean we haven't discovered. I mean, there are underwater volcanoes nad earthquakes, right? How do we know that it wasn't completely submerged by some kind of tropical disaster?

Because Plato made it up.

I am writing a book called slipstream. (it's like stargate) i basically rip our theories to shreds. saying that all humans were moved from other planets and the myths what we remembered from when we were on other planets.

The Canaries Islands are the remains of Atlantis. Well, I think.

Oh, and since I'm here...

Very convincing.

How about you start by giving me one reason to believe that Plato did not merely invent Atlantis for his own literary/philosophical purposes?

Who on all the Earth is Plato?
Oh, I remember... it's the guy who invented Atlantis...
A proof it exists: it's in Age of Mythology: The Titans Expansion (a video game).

Ok, it is not very convincing but it's all I know...

He had no reason to, Plato was not a playwright or writer of literature, he was a philosopher. Not only that, but the statement by Plato of the existence of Atlantis was highly challenged in his time

Cool, I'm off to write a book about the last surviving Atlantian (named Patrick) who blames snakes for the fall of Atlantis and thus sets of on a manic vendetta against all snake-kind (in Ireland only). I will then tie my story in with the story of Adam and Eve by pointing out that both stories contain snakes, before concluding that modern christianity is derived from Atalantian stories.

Ah, yes, but Plato himself describes how an invented myth - the myth of the metals - would be used in the Ideal State to lend stability to the class system. How can we be sure he was not actually attempting to do the same thing with his description of Atlantis?

What would he be using it to add legitimacy to?

At the moment I can't quite recall much about his description of Atlantis other than the fact it was basically circular and had the noblemen living at the centre (hey, its been over ten years since I last read it, so go easy on me) and so I don't feel prepared to venture even a tentative suggestion as to exactly which of his own beliefs he may have been using it to back up.

He had no reason to, Plato was not a playwright or writer of literature, he was a philosopher.

The distinction was hardly so pronounced for him. He made up plenty of myths... "Er," for instance.

Not only that, but the statement by Plato of the existence of Atlantis was highly challenged in his time

So... Your evidence that it exists is that even in the ancient world, when knowledge of it might have been floating around, everyone challenged its existence?

If Plato knew about it, how did he find out? Where were his sources to back him up?
AnarchyeL
09-03-2005, 22:42
What would he be using it to add legitimacy to?

He was actually using it in a round-about sort of way to criticize tyranny. But you would have to read the dialogue first before we could even begin to discuss the nature of that criticism.

Did you ever see the Family guy where the Irish were a super-intelligent Race of über-humans until they first distilled whiskey? Slight similarity here...

It's quite possible that Atlantis was an antedeluvian society that was destroyed in the Flood, and that Noah's children remembered it in oral tradition until the time of the ancient Egyptians. From there we know that Plato formulated his writings based upon discussion with an ancient Egyptian. It's not a great stretch from an archaelogical standpoint. The technical details are elusive, of course, as there is no obvious "Hey I'm the former site of Atlantis" dig to explore.

Circular? it could have been another planet maybe? you never know, aliens may have abducted smart people back then and then went to taking the stupid ones as the smart ones remembered their homeworld.

Atlantis met it's ends when Bepplar the Destroyer tired of their insolent civilization and sent El-Kempo and Sheplar the Devourer to consume the entire island in the space of 32 minutes and 29 seconds.

There is a theory that the portion of the story of Atlantis about its destruction was borrowed from the volcanic eruption of Santorini. The volcano formed most of the island, and when it blew it left a hole almost percisely its size (now a bay called the Caldera (http://seabluegreen.com/vacation/santorini8.jpg)). Santorini had housed a sizeable Minoan-like culture.

Well given that the Antartic land mass used to be in a much warmer area of the Pacific ocean before it slid southward, who knows whats under all that ice.

(Haven't looked at that site yet )

Several authors in the last year or so have used the Antartic location in their fictional works - one of my favorites Clive Cussler had his enduring hero, Dirk Pitt, find Atlantis there.

Atlantis was supposed to be an island, a city state of advanced technology, that was circular - surrounded by concentric, alternating rings of water and land, the water joined by 3 (?) great canals, the land by many soaring bridges ( It's been years since I tried to remember that stuff )

Of course, advanced technology by ancient standards is probably pretty hohum to us. But it would be nice to see what was lost and regained.

By advanced technology it could have been architecture that was attractive. I am quite certain that the word technology didn't quite meant to them what it does to us.
