Depends on the video game. I noticed that Devil May Cry 1 on Dante Must Die was extremely not good at relieving frustration.

You get angry during the day; you come home pissed off at the world and everything about it; you play Doom3 or Half-Life 2, or any other first person shooter. You loose yourself in the wanton carnage and forget the reason for being angry. You feel better.

Or

You're an undesireable person; you come home to your Massive Multiplayer Online game and take on the personality of your character in game. You lose your real identity and take on whatever identity you have in game. This is assuming people like you in game.

Nothing better to relieve frustration than crushing someone against the boards while playing EA Sports Hockey!

Point noted; I think the main point with video games and relieving frustration is that you can act out your anger through a game rather than do something destructive in reality.

Classic Metal Slug always relieved me of stress, you can get Emulated Roms for your computer, or if you have an xbox you can buy Metal Slug 3.

There is probably others for different consoles, i'm not sure though.

It's just quick, simple and enjoyable, I think that is what makes it effective.

I find that the GTA series is one of the best stress relievers - nothing like smashing the heads of a few people in, or blowing them off, to let off steam. But then I am a morbid soul anyway.

Great stree reliever for sure, as long as it isn't friggin' hard. Mindless killing games are great relievers, so are fighting games if your not getting your ass handed to you.

Depends on the game really...

Some games if it's tough or irritating, might make you even more frustrated. Or when your losing.

Like CounterStrike for me is really a reliever, because I can kill people for fun. However to those dying... their pulling out their hair. :D

I find that playing a good, long game of Madden 2005 can either relieve all amounts of stress, or bring on a fuckload more.

Especially when you're beaten 31-30 in the final minute of the game, thus having no chance for a comeback.

Puzzle class games do not relieve frustration, or any game that requires some ridiculous task to be accomplished in order to get further in the game

On Vice City, I like to go "bowling".

"Bowling" is basically getting in a car, stepping on the gas, and heading straight for a group of people. You hit the brakes, do a turn, and see how many people you kill in the tailslide.

It's really fun.

rather than (or as well as) focusing on stress relief, you could also focus on other (more tangible) benefits of gaming, such as increased Hand-eye co-ordination, higher situational awareness, and increase in Multi-tasking abilites, etc

:( Or you could focus on getting zoned out while staring at GORE violence while your 3 year old is screaming its head off when you're 17.

I find the KOTOR series to be the best stress relievers. Go Dark Side, and you get to do so many fun things.
Lady: Sir, could you please sell this to someone for me and give me the money? I don't have a license to sell it, but I need the money since my husband died. I could probably get 500 credits for it.
Me: 500? Gimme it or I'll kill you.
Lady: But...
Me: Now.
Lady: Fine, evil man! I hope you die. *gives you item*
Me: I think I'll kill you anyway. *kills her*

Sooooo much fun.

I have them on X-box, so I know little of mods for it (I might if I had X-box live, but I'm skint)

EDIT: I'm too involved in these games. The second time around on KOTOR, I called my character Darth Revan, just so I had the option of saying 'But I'm not Darth Revan any more, I'm Darth Revan' :D

Statement: I do not understand your interest in this meatbag, master. Unless this is a clever ruse to catch it off-guard, in which case I congratulate you on your deviousness.

You know what game is not only useless for relieving frustration, but also great at instilling a deep feeling of futility and uselessness? The zombie infection game, but the version without soldiers, where you just sit and watch everybody die.

Burnout 3 is good though.

Statement: There is a 99.8% probability that this meatbag wishes to inform you that his people have been kidnapped by the Sand People and he wishes you to rescue them.

"And the other .2%..?"

There is a 0.2% probability that he is a lying, deceitful little meatbag that requires blasting. But that may just be wishful thinking on my part, master.

After he said that, I wanted to go with the .2%, but couldn't find the option.

I pretty well need some sort of physical activity to relieve frustration, or drugs.

But video games do an excellent job of helping me forget about the source of frustration.

Knights 2 is hard to beat. I was referring to either one. I almost had the highest level, the one after mastery. Something involving the word "universal" I think. Then I did something bad. I told Kriea that she had to die. I dropped into the gray. Damn game.

Also, I think they improve coordination, reflexes, perceptiveness (IN First Person Shooter, you have to spot snipers, enemies, ect.), strategic-ness(with realm time/turn based strategy games), and sociality (MMORPG). Just a heads up! Lol I LOVE video games.

I got to the top of the light side on the original. It was odd. The picture showed light streaming upwards vertically behind me, and my character had this funny light which randomly imploded into him.
