I'm leaving NS! (Actually I want to discuss world music, but I just HAD to...)
Sorry about the title, really...it just seem that the exodus had died down and I wanted to make Vitt gag:).
So, those of you who don't only listen to music from the United States (past or present)...what do you like?
Some of my favourites include:
Carlos Vives (Colombia)
Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Inti Illimani, Sol y Lluvia, Los Jaivas, Illapu, Tito Fernandez, Quelentaro, etc etc etc (Chile)
Virginia Rodrigues (Brasil)
Silvio Rodriguez, Los Orishas, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Pablo Milanes (Cuba)
to name just a few:)

Indonesian. I love Gamelan. You can't touch it.
I'm listening to some Gamelan music right now. The bells, the bells. I like African Tribal music as well, but don't know if it has a more formal name. South American music is equally great, if it's upbeat, to me.
I'm trying to find more Asian music, but most of the music shops nearby only cater to western tastes.
Gamelen are those wooden things that knock together, aren't they? (if they are, I have a little set a friend brought me...they sound cool...and if not, ignore me:))
Kathem Saher + Ragheb Alameh (Arabic)

I love all the death metal bands from various Scandinavian countries (mostly Norway and Sweden), Sepultura from Brazil (I think), and all the great rock bands from Britain like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath, et cetera.
Kathem Saher + Ragheb Alameh (Arabic)
I love spanish gypsy music, and I find that arabic music sounds so similar (yeah, I know there are big time connections between the two). I like it even though I don't understand the arabic. I love the versatility of the vocalists and the great minor keys...

No, no, we said music. :D

But you have to use a language, or there is no point. For me, there would be no point outside of the music:(

that's part of a Gamelan. The Gamelan is the entire Indonesian orchestra, very percussion heavy. Bells, xylophones, metallophones, etc. I still haven't learned the difference between balinese and javinese gamelan... I like both.
I just really like percussive music.

Sorry, but she's Celine Dion.
I listen to:
Puffy
Love Psycadelico
Judy and Mary
Yuki (from broken up Judy and Mary)
I don't listen to Morning Musume but consider them one of the most brilliant marketing schemes ever devised. Morning Musume is a girl band in Japan, It expands and shrinks on a daily basis and is composed of girls from 12 to 28. At 28 they are kicked out of the band. It is diabolically evil as they cannot really sing, don't play instruments but were created to appeal to anykind of man from normal young guy to dirty old man in the park.

Just a little bit......
Anyways, I don't really like foreign music, mostly because I can't understand it. Like at all.

Johnette Napolitano
Did a lot in South America, I think just recently resides in the US?
Leader singer of Concrete Blonde...again, currently.
Catatonia - UK somewhere.
And there's always Mogwai,(Scotland), Sigur Ros,(Iceland? Somewhere up North), and Rob Zombie. Because Rob Zombie is his own nation.
I <3 internal organs.

I'm rather fond of Giboni. (Croatian)
Gorky Park (Russia)
Def Lepard (UK)
Sting (UK)
Rod Stewart (UK)
Scorpions (Germany)
Enya
Yanni (Greece)
Newsboys (Australia)
Rebecca St. James (Australia)
And a few others I can't think of off the top of my head at the moment.
Oh yeah, Europe and Roxette are both Swedish if I recall correctly.
And if you add in Classical composers like J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Brahms, Mozart, Tchiakovski, Beethoven and the like the list gets quite longer.

Currently listening to: Amassakoul, by Tinariwen; the Futuro Flamenco compilation; a cd of traditional Maronite chants; and the very wonderful Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.
OK so the last lot are not really world music, but they are very wonderful, and not completely mainstream.

I like Fairuz, of Lebanon, and tons of Israeli pop: Slomo Artzi, Teapacks, Ariel Zilber, Aviv Gefen, Machina, Ofra Haza, and many more.

I like Qawwali, the music of the sufis. The most famous being Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who has died, but his qawwals still perform with his nephew Rahat, who looks like a South Asian Ed Kowalczyk... (the singer from Live) I'd also recommend the Sabri Brothers, and tehre are other artists whose names I can't remember!
My boyfriend has also got me listening to a bit of reggae and dub. The obvious Marley for reggae, but on the dub side it's King Tubby, Dennis Brown, etc. Dub is great chilling music!
And does the Tea Party count? :D Also Rammstein, and from South Africa The Springbok Nude Girls. (coincidentally my uncle custom made their speakers and handled some of their sound thingies. Apparently it was very interesting when he told his wife who he was working for...) Also fom South Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Mandoza. Mandoza (I hope I spelled that right) are a qwaito band. Qwaito is the music of the townships, very funky.

After thinking about it, some very prominent non-american music are held in high regard by most such as Brahms, Beethoven, Bach (all German), Tchaikovsy, Shostakovich, Bartok, Schoenberg, Saint-Seans, Sibelius. Also, those that watch any samurai movies, anime, or the recent Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has listened to Tan Dun and other Far Eastern music.
Also not-to-be-left-out is "Baliwood" (spelling?) which is arguably at least as popular as Hollywood, if not more. It definitely circulates more songs than Hollywood, as the Indian "Baliwood" is almost entirely musicals.
I personally respect all of these to varying degrees. I listen more commonly to those in the first paragraph.
The Lightning Star

Franz Ferdinand! Weeeeeeeee!
I also like Los Amigos Invisibles, especially their song Playa Azul. Panama's music just...sucks.

I used to listen and still do (at times) listen to Trip Hop (as I understand it, the britians came up with this), Desi Beats, I enjoy the good trance/techno/breakbeat/whatever mix by any DJ such as Armin Van Buren (you know the U.S. had a president called Martin van Buren?), Oakenfold(generic, but alright), Tiesto(meh), and others...

You forgot the best part! Like all J-pop idol groups, the hyper-choreographed campy (often "sexy"?) "dance routine" (?) is all important. (The hilarious costumes are almost as good.)
For anyone one looking to check out similar stuff, look for Onyanko Club, Speed, Candies, Max, and (the queens of idol Jpop) Pink Lady.
Some good Japanese bands:
The Boredoms
Melt Banana
Blue Hearts
Barnabys
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra
Nenes
Shang Shang Typhoon
Orquestra de la Luz
As far as genres I like:
Japanese and Okinawan minyo
Japanese traditional art music and gagaku
Chinese traditional music of all sorts (I have an awesome CD of jazz standards performed on the er-hu)
And lots more....
