In light of seeing Napoleon Dynamite, I thought we could discuss that degree of patheticness our own NSers are guilty of. It has to be Napoleon-dynamiteistic patheticness. Any level lower then that will not do. :)

Well, I'd hardly be pathetic if I wasn't home-schooled. But I am, and I'm thoroughly pathetic.

Wanna know the easy way to abandon a good social life? Go to home school!

Wanna know how *not* to meet more than five people in seven years? That's right, home school!

Okay, I think you guys can see what I mean...

I'm pretty sure that there isn't a lower level of pathetic than Napoleon Dynamite. DUMBEST. MOVIE. EVAR.

Combine your bowhunting skills with bad-ass guitar skills and you could be called Ted Nugent.

I didn't really like the movie, I think I laughed maybe 2-3 times during the entire thing. A lot of my friends really enjoyed it, and quote it in pretty much every conversation I have with them.

Wow. Apparently, you got the Condi Rice special intelligence report. Which is to say the inaccurate and misleading one. It wasn't the best movie ever, but it was pretty funny. Worth ninety minutes, anyway.

Napoleon Dynamite was not up to all the hype, there is about 2-3 really funny parts, but most of it was just stupid

I thought it was funny. Mainly because I know people who are pathetic like that. It made the movie funny in a sad ro sympathetic kind of way. Quoting the movie that much is too obsessvie though.

Here's how I'm pathetic ... I watched that whole movie and the deleted scenes and everything and could not, the whole time, shake the feeling that I was missing out on some horribly funny inside joke.

Maybe I was meant to feel that way.

That wouldn't happen, because I'm a very sociable and likeable person. I did have my share of complaints in my Public School days, but it was always the retarded/stupid kids who were just jealous of who I am.

Thank you, CF. I thought it was hilarious. I guess you have to have a certain kind of humor, know/have the right type of people/life, or be on the right kind of drugs.

But where is he? He sent me a tg, but i haven't seen him lately. :(

Actually, if you look at it like the movie is making fun of the state of Idaho it's really quite funny.

So, it's sort of like SLC Punk in that respect? SLC Punk has a *ton* of inside jokes, and it relentlessly makes fun of the American Hardcore Punk scene.

If Napoleon Dynamite is like you say it is, I'll watch it.

I found Napolean Dynamite funny in that stupid humor that I love. So I really liked it. The second time I saw it, as per my job, I started noticing the little things that normal people notice. Various tech things like the fact that you can see tech peoples' legs in the reflection of a payphone at one point...I'm a theatre techie and so I'm supposed to notice little things.

There is a television show, Reno PD or something like it, that is the same way. I felt like I was missing out on something for most of both Napolean Dynamite and SLC punk, but the Reno Cop show was hilarious for me. (I'm from reno originally) maybe you just need to have a certain viewpoint/knowledge set (though not necessarily geographical position) to fully appreciate these.

What to do when you're bored:

1) get a styrofoam or plastic cup
2) get a permanent marker
3) draw a person on the cup
4) make a hole at about 3/4 of the person
5) put a straw in the hole
6) pour some water

For SLC Punk, you *really* have to be into the Punk Rock scene. The origins, the history... Everything. It's fucking great when you know all about it. I assume it's the same for Napoleon Dynamite and the state of Idaho.

And Reno 911 is funny as hell. I still don't know what's up with that guy and his "Cheetah Legs", though...

slc punk starts out okay if you were in the scene but its ultimate message is the most pathetic cop out, mainstream bullshit betrayal of the scene i've ever seen. i liked the first 3 quarters of the movie, but by the final credits i would gleefully have kicked the creators teeth down his traitorous whore throat.

That's exactly the response they were looking for. It starts out making you believe it's a "Hardcore" movie, but then it really insults the scene.

It shows how stupid most of it really was, and I've gotta tell ya, they're right. They were supposed to be "Anarchists", but they were fucking conformists through and through. It's a great movie for anybody who really understands what the subliminal message is.

its not really a subliminal message, its just a look at the scene through clichedly conventional lens. its a movie that just has a better eye for the superficial details than most hollywood portrails of the scene but no deeper understanding.

Yeah, but it does a really good job of pointing out oddities.

Like with how the guy with the blue hair (forgot his name, but is played by Matt Lillard) was talking about how the Sex Pistols were frauds, and then later on in the movie you see the his friend's van, and it has a *huge* Public Image Limited logo painted on it.

Brilliant.

maybe its just that i see the scenes flaws as such easy targets, but the movie never really understood its virtues. of course i'm a expunk with two jobs, a wife and a morgage and all the other trappings of conventional life. i understand how my youthful idealism failed, i just don't agree with what i think was a superficial anylisis of it. i know in some ways the scene just recreated the conventions of the larger society in minature, i know in some sense we all always were posers in our attempts to recreate ourselves, but damn it just wasn't that simple.
