i would appreciate if you mentioned Ireland gaining it's independance. you only mention the act of union and make no reference to the treaty that ended it. this seems to imply that the act of union is still in effect. i feel that this is important as it was a defining factor in the shape of the British commonwealth as it is today. also, nutterstown, britain never had the 'right' to rule those countries, and saying that it does/did could easily be misunderstood as racist.

5 - No, if we exclude Hong Kong
6 - No
7 - Don't think so
8 - None, there is no empire anymore - it's the British Commonwealth now.
9 - Eep, I don't know
10 - Don't know

I did a lot of work on the British Empire while I was studying history in college, so I like to think I know enough about my homeland's history... I focussed more on Africa and America than the other half, but I covered pretty much everything. My problem isn't remembering dates, but remembering names...

1) At its height, what fraction of the earth's surface did the Empire control? (It's a simple and approximate fraction, no 2606826/2389156201 rubbish).

One quarter of the planet's population and land.

2) In which year was India handed over to the Indian populace?

India qualified for self-government in 1935, and was made 100% independent in 1947.

3) In which year was Hong Kong handed over to China?

1999, I think.

EDIT: Duuuh, 1997, I remember because it was a almost a full year since I'd started high school.

4) Was Rwanda a part of the British Empire?

To my knowledge it has only ever been occupied by Germany and Belgium, in terms of European countries anyway. If Britain has occupied the country, it's going to be news to me. News that's several decades, if not centuries, old, but there you go...

5) Was China part of the British Empire?

Due to the various Opium Wars, multiple parts of China fell under British rule at various points, however briefly. Shanghai was briefly held by British forces (after which treaties forced China to keep the city open to trade), as well as several other places, but Hong Kong was an official British holding until quite recently
The whole of China, though, was never part of the British Empire.

6) Was Japan part of the British Empire?

Not to my knowledge.

7) Did Britain at any point exercise control over the Sudan?

As I recall, Britain had joint rule over the Sudan, in conjunction with Egypt. I could be wrong on that one, though.

8) How many territories remain in the British Empire?

I couldn't tell you from memory, I'm afraid. Mostly just small islands, though.

9) When was the Act of Union with Ireland passed?

1801.

10) In which year was the Battle of Waterloo fought?

1815.

11) In which year was Australia handed over to home rule?

Practically, 1942; theoretically and officially, 1986.

12) Name one remaining part of the British Empire.

Falkland Islands.

13) Do you believe the British Empire was important in shaping world events?

Phenomenally important. The world would be a dramatically different place today if the small island of 'Great Britain' hadn't existed.

14) Would you describe the British Empire as major/minor/moderate in terms of power at its height?

Most class it as a 'superpower', though I've heard references to 'hyperpower' in certain books and on certain websites. I would definitely say it was a superpower of the times.

15) In which year did Britain officially ceade claim to parts of France?

1904? Seems like the appropriate time to do it, if any.

16) Do you regret the British Empire and the actions it undertook in the colonies?

From a historical standpoint, there are no regrets. One must view history objectively, or one is not viewing history properly.

17) In which year did British forces last defeat the French navy at sea?

1805? I'm not sure if that was the last one, but nothing comes to mind at the moment. Knowing me, I've probably forgotten the biggest war of all time somewhere, though.

18) Was the United States at any time part of the British Empire?

No. The United States didn't exist when Britain operated colonies in North America. To clarify, I'm just being pedantic, I know what you meant :p. The regions now with the United States were, at some point, British.

19) Who was Prime Minister of Britian when India was handed over to home rule?

I couldn't tell you. Some people have trouble with dates, I go down the name route.

20) Do you believe that Britain's day has passed as a true world power?

By no means is Britain the most powerful nation in the world, as they once were. But Britain is, I believe, the 5th most economically powerful country in the world (China is expected to surpass that rating some time this year, though, I think). Their military is not the largest in the world, but it is certainly one of, if not the most highly trained and well-equipped in the world, and is certainly respected by all. There is no doubt about Britain's capabilities, but as national pride continues to diminish their current standings may be lowered simply by a dip in morale. Something needs to happen to Britain, or Britain needs to do something, which will 'rally the troops' so to speak and get some national pride flowing again, if they wish to retain their capabilities.
Britain is trying to act like an empire, but without the resources of an empire; while this may seem foolhardy it could well be the determination which keeps Britain as a powerful international force well into the the 21st century.

16) Do you regret the British Empire and the actions it undertook in the colonies? Nope. Heavens no.

17) In which year did British forces last defeat the French navy at sea? By last, do you mean when was the last battle or when were they finally smashed for good and left as the broken shell of a force they have remained until recently? Because I'd guess 1940, when we sent their entire fleet to the bottom to prevent it being captured by the Germans.

18) Was the United States at any time part of the British Empire? Until 1779, I believe. Not sure when Virginia was founded. Although technically the United States did not exist until after the revolution, and so therefore... well, never mind.

Well, depends on the definition of "world power". It has certainly been in decline for a long time, and other world powers, like china, are rising. In addition, it seems like Britain has to choose between siding with the EU or with the US in global issues, and has lost some of it's independant influence. So, if i have to answer yes or no, i'll answer yes.
