Debunking the Dr. Laura Bible Letter

If you have never seen it, you'll get to see it know...but since all the laws come from the Old Testament, who better to debunk it then the jew. I will reply with the actual answers to those questions. :)

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

1. This only applies to Jew's buying Non-Jews...so sorry to all you gentiles out there, also i don't think people sell slaves much anymore...., so the law isn't used much anymore. Plus you must remember to treat the servant nicely.

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

1. This only applies until she reaches puberty, after that you cannot sell her.
2. You are selling not your daughter into slavery, you are giving her to a family, in knowing that either she'll marry the Master or one of his sons.
3. She can leave willingly after 6 years, if it is a jubilee or if she has reached puberty. Whichever comes first.

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Well if she was religious, she would tell you herself. Plus shouldn't you know when she has it by now?

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

Actually we should be smiting you! What are you doing sacraficing? That is the job of the Kohenim (Priest)! But since we don't have out Temple Mount...i'll look the other way...this time!

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

Yes you should, provided the neighbour is a Jew, living in Israel. But because of the diasapora he is not as smart as you..you should teach him, that what he is doing is wrong, that way he may become religious over time due to your teachings.

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

You are right, There are no degrees, it is either an abomination or not.

7. Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

If you are a Kohen then this is true...but now we have Plastic Surgery, so you may correct your blemishes. G-d Bless technology eh?, but this does not apply to your vision it applies to the appearance. Such as long eyebrows, a white ling that goes to the iris etc. But Good vision helps, when reciting prayers.

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

Do not kill them! Teach them the laws, so they know not to do it. Although if he is religious and continues to do so, some lashes with a whip might straighten him out.

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

Provided that you are not going to the Temple during a festival, you may play football freely. But be sure to wash your hands afterwards regardless.

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

No you must stone him as commanded, it is the only way to sav our children from his heresies.

Well i think i answered them correctly, but you must know, these laws only apply to the holy land and to Jews and not in a Gentiles land, if the Gentile allows you to practice your laws, then it is fine.

Even then, it is better to try and teach the person to stop their ways, rather then killing them left and right. After all they may remember their culture, but they were persecuted because of their religion, you must teach it to them again.

Are there any questions? Is there something in the way i answered that you do not understand? If so, i hope i will never see that stupid thing again. -.-

Why would touching a synthetic football make you unclean?

Nothing wrong with synthetic, but the question was asked assuming the Football was made from Pig Skin, which is how they used to make it.

I thought it was leather and a pig's bladder. Or did they do both?

Who really cares about Jewish law? Jews believe in their god the wrong way, so the laws derived from that belief are not binding for anyone anyways. And even in ancient times Mosaic law was inhuman and desintegrative and motivated by haughtiness and racism, no matter how you interpret it.

You are not Jewish, so you have nothing to worry about!

Please entertain me...how do I believe in G-d the wrong way? How is our religion racist and inhuman? Do not base your "facts" based what you see going on in the middle east. Technically i can call Islam also a barbaric religion, because of what i see in Sharia law...but Keruvalia, would be quick to correct my misunderstandings.

Is it me, or does this not so much debunk the letter as answer some of the questions? Wasn't the gist of the letter that if she was going to follow one of those laws why was she being so selective? I think the last part, where it only applies to jewish land sort of re-enforces the letter, I would think. Still cool, just...

Err..which one? I want the actual passage.

Is it me, or does this not so much debunk the letter as answer some of the questions? Wasn't the gist of the letter that if she was going to follow one of those laws why was she being so selective? I think the last part, where it only applies to jewish land sort of re-enforces the letter, I would think. Still cool, just...

1. Actually it answers all the questions, and debunks them by showing his questions do not make sense.

2. True, but i have seen people use it as a way to show that religion is a hoax and they're all violent and such. That's why i did this.

3. Re-enforce? What do you mean?, i was bored by the time i got to the last question but my point still stands. If you do not understand something do not go and interpert it yourself. Talk to the people who passed this knowledge gneration after generation.

anyways i g2g now, if there are any more comments/questions, i'll reply to them when i'm back.

So what your saying is that these laws are true, but they only apply to jewish people. You say that Jewish people can own slaves from neighboring countries.
So why does the law on homosexuality affect gentiles?
I have to say that many of your explanations are quite barbaric. for instance.

No you must stone him as commanded, it is the only way to sav our children from his heresies.
and
Yes you should (kill him), provided the neighbour is a Jew, living in Israel.

Well, MuhOre, but shouldn't the believer in the Bible, from which this passages are taken, be the ones who decide that it applies to them or not? I mean, I understand it was a book written by Jews for Jews (except the New Testament, of course), but for the longest time it's been used by non-Jewish people.

They also chose which books to follow, and not all of the Jewish books made it into the final compilation. One would understand that those books then are the ones that should be followed regardless.

Anyway, it's really to show the contradictions, not in religion per se, but in religious people.

Good thing I'm not religious, eh? :)

Go smoke some weed. That way you satisfy god's demand that you be stoned, yet you get to go on living.

Well, it asks questions and you answer them. I don't know that you can really debunk a question-you can answer a question by pointing out that it is formed on a faulty premise, but that doesn't debunk the question-it's still an inquiry and not a claim. Claims can be debunked, questions can only be answered.

2. True, but i have seen people use it as a way to show that religion is a hoax and they're all violent and such. That's why i did this.
Never seen that, I've only seen it to ask why the homosexual law was being selectively applied, which in order to debunk the overall argument you'd have to point out why that is still valid to the gentile and jewish world while the other laws aren't. Using the letter the other way is kinda silly*-but there are still violent parts in there, so I don't know that it debunks that so much. Much more I think you would have to point out how the laws have changed and /or no longer apply through the history of the orthodox Jewish church, but as is probably evident by that sentence I know bupkiss about it.

*I can see how that can get irratating. I'm an athiest and will discuss it if engaged, but if we go bugging people about thier religion then I think we become just as irratating which for me would defeat the purpose. For others I guess the story is different.

3. Re-enforce? What do you mean?, i was bored by the time i got to the last question but my point still stands. If you do not understand something do not go and interpert it yourself. Talk to the people who passed this knowledge gneration after generation.
But as a satire, that was the point of the letter. She was selectively interprating an old ass law and so they took that practice out to it's furthest end to parody what she was doing. Though, as you point out, people have used it for other purposes, the original intent was to point out the ridiculousness of Dr. Laura's conclusion by making similar ones based on other laws in the book. By pointing out the flaw in the logic it underlines the flaw in Dr. Laura's initial logic and thus re-enforces the argument the letter was making.

anyways i g2g now, if there are any more comments/questions, i'll reply to them when i'm back.
I gotta go too. If nothing else, though, it's cool to hear about this stuff (Jewish tradition and such) because I'm not going to run across it myself.
