Not in Michigan, where if you can't get a job, you have to work the hours that the privatised Welfare to Work program (owned by weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin) says you have to work. If you're an employer that can get tax breaks to hire W2W employees at minimum wage, why would you hire employees yourself?

In the UK your employer cannot force you to work longer than 40 hours a week, but you can choose to do so if you want.

Actually, it's very possible, just not on this forum.

See sites like somethingawful.com where there's a good mix between serious threads and parody. Of course, the demographic is a bit more varied over there than it is here, this forum tends to be very Euro-centric where as SA is more heterogenous.

Someone here starts "WOW THE USA IS AWESOMEST" and people pull out their government issued (I don't know if they're government issued, but it sure seems like it at this time, arguments here seem to be very formulaic) anti-USA argument book and copy down page 36. Then someone here gets out their Republican Party Manual (Again, I'm no Republican, so I don't actually know if they have a Party Manual) and copy down page 64 'Dealing with hot-headed Europeans.'

Someone there starts the same thread, someone else will see what is going on immediately, make a fast comment, and everyone who may not have known better reads the other guys "Oh, you go get em' tiger 9/11 never forget" and anyone who had their argument book out will put it away and join in the party. This usually continues until someone else makes a funnier thread that's actually about comedy.

There have been some good parody threads on this forum, people just really don't appreciate them, and you can tell in the Mods forum. The threads with the different titles poking fun at another thread? Yes, those are good for a chuckle from people with a little sense of humor. Other people get mad because they see that, come in guns-a-blazing and then realize that they showed up at a silly hats party and they weren't wearing a silly hat.

Edit: it should go to note that most of the US population on that forum tends to the Libertarian and Liberal spectrums as well. There's also a higher standard of posting intelligence.

You have a lot of maybes and perhaps in there. Are you sure it's not serious? Even if it wasn't intended to be serious, do you really think that there are not a great many of people on NS who hold this opinion? I have seen this sort of sentiment echoed again and again on NS. I have also seen people blindly bashing the US and stooping to personal attacks. I have seen people making valid critiques of US policies, and getting attacked personally as well. There are all types on NS, so no, I don't think I'm out of line to take this post seriously. If the poster himself didn't mean it, I can guarantee you that there are those here on NS that do.

It seems over the past week, everything on NS has been reduced to the pro-US folk versus the anti-US folk...and not the rational ones who actually discuss and critique and analyse...but the ones who call each other names and seem incapable of keeping their cool. I hope this is a dying trend.

However, if you want to go wave your flag, go for it...but be prepared for the inevitable questions of, "But what about...." Don't make statements claiming to be the best nation on earth (and this goes for everyone, not just people of the US) without being prepared to be questioned on that.

I've, uh, never experienced the vast majority of the crummy things you charge here. The only true part being you can travel by car, bus, bike or own feet. And that's only half true. You can also travel by train and plane. So...um...cheers.

I AM proud to be an American and I am proud to be of Polish descent. I guess I am just happy being who I am. But I don't think the US is perfect, and while you can name other countries who have it worse off than we do here, we have a lot of improvements to make.

It's hard to have a country people respect when your leader is an idiot. All people are entitled to make mistakes and I, for one, would not want to have to make the decisions he does. But, when the leader of "the most powerful nation on earth" (said with tongue in cheek) looks, sounds and acts like a moron, it's hard to hold your head up and be proud of your country.

A friend of mine posted this on another forum. I don't know the source, but it makes me chuckle. Some Americans may agree with me, some may not. As for those of you from other parts of the world, you can either laugh along with us or roll your eyes. :rolleyes:

My husband has a long record of money problems. He runs up huge credit card bills and at the end of the month, if I suggest trying to pay them off, he shouts at me, saying I am stealing his money. He says pay the minimum and let our kids worry about the rest, but we can hardly keep up with the interest. He has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us.

The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lot of expensive gifts, running up our bills even more. Also, he has gotten religious in a big way, although I don't quite understand it. One week he hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ. And now he has been going to the gym an awful lot and is into wearing uniforms and cowboy outfits, and I hate to think what that means.

The last straw...... He's demanding that before anyone can be in the same room with him, they must sign a loyalty oath. It's so horribly creepy!

Not in Michigan, where if you can't get a job, you have to work the hours that the privatised Welfare to Work program (owned by weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin) says you have to work. If you're an employer that can get tax breaks to hire W2W employees at minimum wage, why would you hire employees yourself?

In the UK your employer cannot force you to work longer than 40 hours a week, but you can choose to do so if you want.

There is also a country called United States of America, that people most often abbreviate America, leading sometimes to confusion. It's as if Spain decided to change it's name from Kingdom of Spain to Kingdom of Europe. I bet most people in Germany would find it confusing and a bit offensive.

On the same token, if Venezuela wanted to change it's name to United States of America it could also do that. Why? Because it's a collection of states that are in the American continent.

To non-Americans: Please, please, please, please do not take everything Michael Moore says seriously. I have studied his films extensively and I'm almost positive that this notion about the Welfare to Work program comes from his quasi-documentary, Bowling for Columbine. He is a gifted filmmaker who has the ability to reach people very well, but he is nortorious for scewing facts and using isolated incidents such as the one described here to prove his (often incorrect) point. Under the Welfare to Work program started under President Clinton, many welfare reciepients who were otherwise economically dependent on the government moved towards greater economic independence; it is actually a fairly popular social program here in the states. Let's take away the billions, upon billions, upon endless billions of dollars of aid the US has as a nation and as a charitable people given to the world. It might surprise you to learn that the US populace donates twice as much to charities as Europe does.

Let's take away all the scientific and manufacturing innovations to have come from America.

Let's take away all the American contributions to culture. (TV, theatre, music, literature, all of it.)

Unfortunately, this wasn't a "traditional" rap album, in the sense that he had a hard rock band behind him. Which is why it was probably banned, because white kids might like it too.

I would recommend going back to school and actually learn one or two things about other countries, or actually learning anything at all, apart from this ridiculous pledge of allegiance. I will accept the European nations (as free states, don't care about the flag colors), plus add New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the rest of Western Europe to that list. Include Poland, Hungary and the three Baltic Republics plus all of the Scandinavians.

However, the jury is out on Thailand (good NPR piece not too long ago talked about a high incidence of sweatshops that REALLY close to slavery on the Thai border employing large numbers of Burmese).

But Cuba is stretching to the funny.... I personally think the US policy on Cuba is rather silly, as I bet if we buried them in tourist dollars when old Fidal drops dead Cuba will change REALLY quick to a democrat state, but that hasnt been tried yet and probably won't until he drops dead.

The only thing you are really free to do in Cuba is leave.... sort of, and only because its a useful safety valve for Fidal.

I would also add in (on the free and democratic side) Taiwan and Japan, and to an extent, South Korea and the Philippines.

A lot of South America as well, although the rest of Latin America is still working on that and finally, add South Africa (more or less)

the opening comment in the thread is pretty jingoistic and a bit naive, but I have to admit that that is a pretty typical feeling of most Americans and pretty traditional as well.

Its pretty useful at times though... I don't recall many European compliants about our blood and treasure being spent during the Second World War though (well, aside from the Germans and Italians maybe) and we were even more naive and jingoistic back then.

White kids like rap regardless of the beat (or the lyrics), I've found. It's kind of a head-scratcher, since no suburban white kid really has to endure the pains of the ghetto or any such hardship. Some kinds of rap are just impossible for suburbanites (or even rural folk, as was the case in my original hometown) to relate to. But if it sells, it really doesn't matter. Unless, of course, it gets censored, which I will agree with you on.

However, I'm not so totally if sure if it's the government causing the censorship directly, or government friendly retailers (I'm looking at you, Wal-mart) imposing their moral guidelines because they think they know best for their customers (bahahaha).
