Ban cell phones in cars?

Banning cell phones in cars is very popular nowadays. My state legislature just passed a bill banning hands-held cell phones, but not hands-free cell phones.

I'm sort of pissed about this (I'm not buying a fecking hands-free set), but I dunno, maybe I'm in the minority.

I say we take it a step further and not only ban cell phones in cars, but ban all cars, cell phones, and hands!

I say that we shouldn't ban cell phones. We should just ban people from using them after a certain amount of cell phone-related traffic offenses.

Don't ban cell phonres from cars, ban jackasses who can't drive from getting driver's licences

Once you ban something, you need to enforce the ban.

Police roadblocks aren't just for catching drunks, now they're for seat belt and cell phone watch. :D

And maybe they ought to just ban distractions already. No music, no kids in the back, no dogs, no adjusting the AC, none of that...

Or, we could have an officer in every single registered vehicle!

Nah, we could save manpower by just installing video cameras, radio transmitters, and electronic speed monitors in every car sold.

Of course, the government could not just force this on every state, that would be breaking all sorts of constitutional protections!

So the feds just withhold federal highway funds until every state complies. :)

You don't have to worry about anything unless you're breaking the law...

My solution is better!
No cars, no worries about installing surveillance in the cars!

And don't forget about the hidden cameras in every house, office, and general building, plus fully-wired walls and "special" cameras for bathrooms. Because, you know, that's where people would do their drugs. Yeah.

Okay. Here's your monkey wrench from me, Neo. All phones, cars, hands, and spoons should be banned. :p

Well now that will just solve our economic problems, social problems, and political problems, now won't it?

That's brilliant...

I have to say, my first reaction to this idea was "that is so STUPID."
And it was also my second, third, and fourth reactions...

Ideally, they'd standardise mobile phones so that they're all compatible with hands free sets that come standard in every car. Then there would be no excuse to use them without the set. But nope, that would be too logical.

Cell phones are a distraction no matter what, so I voted for banning ALL from cars.

They should just ban stupid people from driving. Especially the stupid drivers who think they can drive and chat on the phone at the same time and they can't.

Almost every week, there's another person who drives into a house or a similar type of building here in Houston.

They're either old, very young (too young to be driving), or cell phone users who can't multitask.

IMHO, ban hands held cell phones only, i've seen too many accidents that have been caused by people talking on cell phones while driving

I say let people drive on their cell phones, but the rest of us are allowed to run those people off the road if it causes them to drive 30 miles per hour in the fast lane. That way they don't have to put up with the inconvenience and the rest of us get to vent our frustration with those idiots.

So I am in the minority. But the largest group here favors banning hands-held, but still allowing hands-free cell phones.

This is consistent with national polling, one of which showed 69% wanting to ban hands-held phones, but only 28% wishing to ban hands-free phones.

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/poll_cellphone010522.html

But isn't the distraction the same, hands-held or hands-free? The issue isn't whether you have one hand or two hands on the wheel, heck I often drive one-handed, it's no big deal. The real point is the distraction, right?

Studies are showing the distraction is essentially the same, hands-held or hands-free: http://www.news.uiuc.edu/news/04/1112cellphones.html.

The number one cause of accidents is distractions. If the hand issue is so important, why don't we just pass a law mandating two hands on the wheel at all times?

My state, New York, was one of the first states (and legal entities in the world) to ban handsets. I find it an assault on personal liberty. If it makes the driver a bit more callous, so what? Punish the driver if he can't multitask. But don't take that option away.

Um, how do you change gear? Or use the handbrake? Or the indicators, wipers or lights? All of them require your hands leaving the steering wheel.

Unless of course you plan to get rid of all those too.

Some people can use cell phones responsibly. If you ban all cell phones, ban all drinking, since there is a minority that screws it up.

Leave them the heck alone. You can punish people more severely for having an accident while using one if you want, but don't restrict their freedoms. Some of us can actually talk and drive at the same time. Just because some people can't doesn't give anyone the right to take that freedom from those who can.
