Do you 'liberate' things?

Now, this is a sensible question - do you take things from pubs, gigs, etc, (eg. posters etc) without actually paying for them? Tonight I 'liberated' a Staropramen poster and a beer mat from a pub, and the poster looks damn good on my wall. In the past, I have 'liberated' glasses (so much in fact, I've had to move them to a bigger cupboard), poster, beer mats, and so on. So...do you?

do it all the time, small things that people dont notice - glasses, posters etc

One time on a treasure hunt, me and a mate liberated an American Express display stand. It had the slogan, "Take it for all the right reasons". So we did, our reasons being that we were drunk and on a treasure hunt, which seemed right enough at the time.

Hell yes, I take as much as I can from every pub I can. I think its part of the experiance--the drunken experiance :)

I have 'liberated' many things :D
from pubs: ashtrades, glasses
School: Pens, papers, anything useful (and not so useful)
'cause school is over for me right now I just take stuff from pubs...
Glasses never on purpose, but ashtrades yes.

When I get rich i will pay for everything ;)

Yes, I have a horrible habit.

Usually limited to buying some coffee at the Student Union and taking loads of those little sugar sachet things. (I haven't bought sugar in time.)

While that is usually the limit of liberated thing. I have taken ash trays, Beer towels, pint classes and beer mats (although nothing compares to a friends collection of beer mats that cover the wall in his room).

I "liberated" a Pinewood Derby car from a Boy Scout Den. That's the only time I've stolen anything, and I only did it because I thought I could have one.

I've usually found that I have glasses when I haven't finished my drink but decide to leave. So I take it with me and just stick it in my pocket.

It isn't petty theft. It is taking an over abundance of things that you are entitled to for free.

Stealing glasses from a Bar is NOT an entitlement. That's theft, and any bar owner will say it just the same. Every time your drunk ass (or someone else's drunk ass) takes one, the price of your pint stands to go up because he/she (the tavern owner) needs to buy more glasses to replace the one you just HAD to have at home because you're too damn cheap to go buy them yourself.

American Express display stands are NOT an entitlement. They are a company display, and if people start stealing them en masse, EVERYONE gets to pay for them with higher fees.

Grabbing a stack of notebooks from a supply closet is NOT an entitlement. Those notebooks were paid with tax dollars and fees under the assumption that they would be distributed EQUALLY to the students and PUT TO GOOD USE for school purposes. Taking a stack of them to draw your doodles or wipe your ass or whatever you do with them is not fair to the other students who had to pay just as much for those notebooks as you had to.

It's theft. Look it up in the dictionary.

I do it by accident. I'm a bit of a klepto.
That, combined with my inability to give away or throw out things that I don't really need, means my house is filled with other people's stuff.

no they werent, they were paid for out of my parents pockets, pupils were entitled to a few notebooks, and you always got another couple if you asked

i just bypassed the whole "asking" thing. my dad said i could have them - and he paid for them

EDIT: maybe the laws are different in the US, but here you can even steal £26.5 million and nobody comes looking for you *nods*

Sadly, I know a place that's closer than the pub I stole the poster from where I can buy glasses that I liberated (stole) from other pubs. It just got voted the top offie on Britain, and it's called The Offie.

Alright, did you ask all of your classmates' parents to see if you could have them? They paid just as much tuition as your dad did, and in that sense, they have an equal share in those notebooks.

I pay 30 grand a year to go to college here, and I can have as many apples in the cafeteria as I want, but as soon as I go into the back room and grab a crate of apples and go toting them back to my seat, the other students are going to do more than raise an eyebrow.

I recently recieved a reprimand for being in someone else's dorm after visitation hours. I pay 30,000 to go to college though, I should be able to stay out whenever I want. That's not the way it works, though.

What is so hard about asking? It makes it a lot easier on the administration when they go and do inventory on their office supplies and they know where those 10 notebooks went. Are you in a secondary school at this time? If so, I guess you're in your "rage against the machine" phase, and being nice to people isn't any good.

The "I paid for this" argument really doesn't work. We try it all the time in college, and we get our asses handed to us.

Edit: I'm pretty sure in the USA, anything over $20 in theft can get you trial by jury. It's possible to take someone to small claims court for any amount of theft, but usually petty stuff will be settled out of court.

Criminally, however, petty theft is defined as a misdemeanor but can be 'enhanced' in the case of multiple counts or extenuating circumstances.

I think the defining line between Petty and Grand theft is $500 in goods or services.

I have pro-actively reallocated many small objects throughout my time at and post univeristy. Small things like glasses and ashtrays (got caught once and had to give the glass back, but after a light hearted chat with the owner he gave me a new clean one so we were both happy!), to books from school which came in very helpful at uni.
Do remember coming home one night with a mate who decided it would be fun to pro-actively reallocate a men at work sign (it had been taken down already) so not to be outdone I allocated myself a flashing beacon light from the roadworks. Still works!

I normally do, sometimes I feel rowdy on a certain day, and what is better than throwing insults at complete strangers :)

And there's levels, but it's just different levels of the same BS. Thank Zeus I'm getting a flat next year.

I would always take excessive salt packages when I'd go to a fast food estabilisment.

Then my roommate bought a box of salt.

I stole one pint glass, but it was a molson's canadian one and i got it for my boyfriend.
I've got a couple posters that were for shows that I attended at my school, they were just going to get taken down and thrown out anyways, so i figured i might as well grab them (note, I took them near the end of the shows so it's not like the advertising is being lost either... everyone who's coming is already there...) I think that's about it. I'm not much of a clepto.

For one thing, $30,000 in tution is rediculous, I pay like $5,000 cdn for tuition and about the same for my rent for the year.
For another, you have visitation hours in your dorms? That's stupid. We had sign in things on the weekends to prevent too much rowdiness and we had limits for exam time, but that was it. Though really, if you came in past 3 you were in the clear as the door monitors weren't there.

Liberation of glasses, jugs, etc from pubs is a duty. I once found myself taking home an empty keg. I walked half way home with it before they caught up with me. After a brief (mostly amiable) discussion, I handed it back & everything was sweet.

Well, all things considered, $13,000 of that is Room and Board.
Then the $17,000 is split up pretty well by a few choice scholarships, so I'm only paying about $16,000 a year out of pocket in total.
