There should be a rule against making me hungry with references to money/food.
Wheat pennies do rule, though.

Cool. ^^ If you want to spiff it up a bit, use an eraser on the penny, and then swirl it around in vinegar. :D

I remember as a kid we used to find those pretty regularly, but these days. it's pretty uncommon.
Nice find.

Wheat is some kind of hay.

Penny is a relatively small unit of money.

But what on earth is a wheat penny? A penny made of wheat? A wheat worth a penny? Or maybe it's pennywheat, a new race of wheat?

A U.S. penny that was discontinued at some point (1950s?). It looks like the one we have now, with Abe Lincoln on the front, but there is Wheat on the back and it says "One cent" or some junk like that. Now there is a picture of the Lincoln Memorial on the back.

Yeah, mate. What year is it?

I'm a coin collector, and I've got a 1917 and a 1934. They're a good find nowadays!

Before 1959/60, the penny had "One Cent" written on it with two wheat sheaths on the reverse (Lincoln was still "heads").

More info:

BTW, if you can find it, a 1943 penny looks silver. Due to the war, that's the only year when pennies were made from STEEL.

I've heard of a certain wheat penny thats worth quite a bit of money. That might be it.

Eh, nvm.. the penny I'm thinking about had a misprint of some sort on it.

Okay, that answers my question about what a "wheat penny" is. I still have two more questions:

Why was this topic posted?
Why should it not be moved to the Jolt Spam forum?

Someone wanted to talk about wheat pennies. Could also be a thread for other coin discussions.

If I may:

1. To discuss coinage
2. It's less inflamatory than http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=403111 ...

Very well, I'll let the topic remain open.

Everyone be advised: If it's not clear at all what your topic is about, you do risk getting the topic locked or moved to the Jolt Spam forum. Do not make vague topics. Thank you.

Great. When we switch over to a steel-wheat-penny-based currency, you will be king. In the meantime, you've got a small piece of metal.

Yeah, but at least it's worth 30-75 cents instead of 1. :)

I too have a steel penny. If you can find a copper one from the same year you're rich. That year, 1946 I think, copper was in short supply because manufacture of copper wire for the war used up almost all the available copper.

I thought the copper was needed for brass shells. I could be wrong tho.

Anyway, I don't go in for the penny thing, but I used to clean and collect ancient coins. You can buy them from a number of oufits. Then it's just a matter of delicately scraping the dirt off and figuring out what you're looking at. You never get any gold because they pre-sort by weight, but there's a lot of fun in the identification. I landed a nice Constantinian follis with sol invictus on the back and another with the chi-rho.

Would not multiple hodgepodges, if combined, create an uberpodge??
