The "I Could Care Less About the United States of America" thread. Really.

That's right. I COULD CARE LESS. And so could most of you. So, let's try to not ONCE mention the name we can not mention for fear of breaking the pact of not mentioning the unmentionable name. It'll really annoy the people out there who are both for and against the unmentionable name, because both those people seem to think it is the most mentionable name in the world, or at least the most mentionable topic EVER. Let us then deflate some egos by NOT mentioning that we are not mentioning the unmentionable name.

Are you with me?

Well, I suppose that's a common misuse of the term...let us compare:

I could care less.

I could not care less.

I think I'm leaving it open. Because I truly could care less about something other than the unmentionable...I care less about flatulence in China than I care about the unmentionable. I'm sure also that at some point, I could care less about the unmentioned than I currently do. I don't like locking myself in with statements that don't allow me to care even less than I do right now.

I just had an english teacher back in middle school who absolutely hated "I could care less". She ranted about it so many times it's permanently stuck in my head.
I always say "couldn't" to say I'm at the bottom of the barrel. I could care no less about whatever than I do right now. I guess I ran the risk of contradicting myself by one day actually caring less.
Well, there's my pointless rambling for the day without once mentioning the UNMENTIONABLE TOPIC

I think this is a great post on your part. I suppose it really is important what you are trying to say with your statement. I, for one, freely admit that there are things I actually care LESS about than the unmentionable. So I think my use of the term "I could care less..." works. If, however, I wanted to say there is absolutely nothing of less importance to me in this world, then I would use, "I couldn't care less...". That isn't true, no matter how much I would wish it to be. I don't claim to speak for everyone here, however.

I would accept either in a student's written work, as long as the meaning was clear.

Then again, maybe I wouldn't.

I'm not sure. I could care less:)

Perhaps it would be better on my part to say, "I could care more about the unmentionable, but I choose not to give it any more importance than it has already given itself, so I choose to care less and in doing so, deflate the importance of the unmentionable by focussing on subjects that could mean more, or less to me, depending on my mood."

No problem. I think I'd be fooling myself if I thought I could go through life not caring at ALL about the unmentionable.

Do you have some unmentionable burning need for a liberal conspiracy everywhere you go? And does constantly signing your name at the end of each post serve some unmentionable purpose? If not, perhaps you should unmention yourself unless you wish to mention something besides the unmentionable, or mention something that has some mentionable merit within the context of this thread.

A frog goes into a bank, and hops up on the desk of the loan officer. ''Hi,'' he croaks.''What's your name?''

The loan officer says, ''My name is John Paddywack. May I help you?''

''Yeah,'' says the frog. ''I'd like to borrow some money.''

The loan officer finds this a little odd, but gets out a form. ''Okay, what's your name?''

The frog replies, ''Kermit Jagger.''

''Really?'' says the loan officer. ''Any relation to Mick Jagger?''

''Yeah, he's my dad.''

''Hmmm,'' says the loan officer. ''Do you have any collateral?''

The frog hands over a pink ceramic elephant and asks, ''Will this do?''

The loan officer says, ''Um, I'm not sure. Let me go check with the bank manager.''

''Oh, tell him I said hi,'' adds the frog. ''He knows me.''

The loan officer goes back to the manager and says, ''Excuse me, sir, but there's a frog out there named Kermit Jagger who wants to borrow some money. All he has for collateral is this pink elephant thing; I'm not even sure what it is.''

The manager says: ''It's a knick-knack, Paddywack, give the frog a loan; his old man's a Rolling Stone.''
