Well, next week Im leaving for my grandparents 50th anniversary, and a trip to Washington DC, so dont expect me to continue any debates.
Anyway, anything you think I should go see? We already have the 'standard' whitehousecapitolbuildingmonuments tour down, plus the smithsonian and the National Arms Museum.
Please, nothing along the lines of 'OMG KILL T3H BUSH!', its a rather poor 'joke', and the Secret Service would tackle me, Im told that hurts.

Make sure that you not only see the National Air and Space Museum downtown, but take the free shuttle bus to see the huge Air and Space facility out near Dulles Airport.

Well worth the trip.

You can go see the vice presidents house, from pictures it looks pretty tacky.

Be sure to see The Wall. The sight of all those names and the thought of the people lost....you have to experience it to understand. I haven't seen it yet, but I am anxious to visit the new WWII memorial. Also, go see the Holocaust Museum. You'll need several days to see all of the Smithsonian...might as well book another visit when you can stay a month or more.

The National Zoo is always worth a look...

;) And if you've an extra day, the Inner Harbor in neighboring Baltimore.

Pay a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and say hi to my bros. I would deeply appreciate that if you would. I think you will like them. Tell them I'll be along directly.

I've never been to D.C. myself, but I hear its a beautiful city. I want to go when the Cherry Blossoms are out.

Skip the National Aquarium, the only reason to go there is if it's 99 degrees out and one needs a "time out". :(

If you're keen on beer, hit The Brickskeller, a block or two from the Dupont Circle Metro stop (Red line).

The food isn't great, but the beer list is pretty impressive. I stop in a few times a year. **If you can sit upstairs**.

Or, better, Buffalo Billiards. http://www.buffalobilliards.com/dc/
Great place to hang out.

I'd also suggest the National Archives. It's right across The Mall from the Air & Space, and you can see the Constitution and other things.

Note: All museums in DC now have security checkpoints with metal detectors. Leave your leatherman at home!

The Mall is beautiful. South East is a pit, North East is a bit better.

(I lived there for 3 years and still visit a few times a year.)

Oh yes. And have dinner at the Capital Grille (6th & Pennsylvania). Best steak in the world. They also make great martinis.

If you want something more exotic, there's always dinner at the Marrakech (fantastic Moroccan decor).

Welli would suggest the War ones and the Law Enforcement one.

Oh and watchout for me i might be in DC next week sometime....

The FBI tour is kind of a let down. It's mostly a museum of what the FBI did in it's heyday.

Air & Space museum is the best.

If you like pagentry, try to see the Marine Corps Evening Parade at the old barracks. That's at Eighth and Eye streets.

Reading a book at the Library of Congress is kind of a neat thing to have done.

Oh, yeah. Visit you Congressman or Senator and get a pass to view Congress. It's another thing that's nice to have done.

You can visit the war memorials too. Not sure if it was posted yet or not. Also, if you're into plays there might be something of interest at the Shakespere Theatre.

I live in the D.C. metro area and actually work in D.C. at the Ronald Reagan building.

Congrats to your grandparents for 50 happy years!

i recently moved to DC, and i've liked it a lot since i've been here. such a groovy city. however, being new around town, i also would love some tips on things to see and do. my boyfriend is coming to visit next week and i would like to have some non-bed-related fun planned for him :P.

keeping in mind, of course, that we are of legal drinking age, will not have a car, and do not like "romantic" activities.

Go to a Metro stop on Thursday and grab a City Paper. Not only free, but has just about everything going on.

They're online, too: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/index.html

Best place to see a band (IMHO) is 9:30 Club: http://www.930.com

The Birchmere is okay, too: http://www.birchmere.com/index.cfm
(though they seem to get less "big names" than 9:30)

I like to hit the MD Ren Faire once a year: http://www.rennfest.com/mrf/

(I worked in L'Efant Plaza & lived in Virginia from 1996-1999.)

Thanks for all your advice guys :)
We already had the Vietnam memorial down, since everybody says to go see it, and I mean EVERYBODY. I had a ten year old tell me to go see it a few days ago. It was kinda scary O_O
It was one of those 'I see dead people' moments.

I just wish tourist crap wasnt so expensive, having lived in a tourist town for six years once, I know exactly how much most of that stuff is worth, IE: A copy of the Constitution which sells for $15 is printed on paper worth $1 and .50C worth of ink. I imagine they pay the Govornment a few bucks for copyright wossnames or something.
At least pictures are free :)

No, it's not. It's a fairly sucky zoo.

However, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is pretty good. They even have some Atta cephalotes, a species of leaf-cutter ant, in the insect zoo there. The National Gallery of Art and the International Spy Museum are also worth a look.
