Manchester Uni, which has a very good academic reputation. Manchester has a huge student popultation, and is a very friendly city with loads of stuff to do. It's also cheaper than other good options such as Oxford, and it's at the centre of the motorway network with good public transport connections, so visits to and from family should be easy. Good luck :)

I am in first year university and am now living away from home for the first time, and I have never regreted the experience. I have been forced to grow up a little
faster though it doesn't mean in my case that I am any more responsible. Plus moving away from home has given me a greater appreciation of my home city, the feeling you only get by being away. So I reccomend leaving your city not just your house for university.
Anywhere but the University of Hertfordshire.

Fool! You could live in Preston and spend all your free time at the Dog & Partridge and The Warehouse! Though you'd be better doing your degree at Manchester or Salford as Central Lancs is hardly a fountain of academic excellence!

If you want to get out of the north, then go for Nottingham. It's a top-rate uni and i used to go there lots over the last 4 years when I had a friend at uni there. It's nearly as good as Manchester for bars/clubs/gigs/shops etc, but is small enough that you can get round it easily. Just don't live in St.Anns though. That's the guncrime hotspot!

I,ve commented on those that I know something about and that are not in the North. I am assuming that you are asking about the places rather than the accademic qualitiy (Not being involved with Nursing, I have no clue except that Kings in London is one of the best medical schools in the world)
BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY
Dead town, full of grannies and foreigners trying to learn english
BRIGHTON, UNVERSITY OF
Touristy and expensive
BRISTOL, UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND
Great night life, good transport. Definite possibility
CAMBRIDGE, HOMERTON SCHOOL OF HEALTH STUDIES
Forget oxford or cambridge, unless you want to be sneered at
CANTERBURY, CHRISTCHURCH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
Sleepy but slightly bohemian. Difficult to get anywhere, but difficult for your parents to pull surprise visits too.
CHELMSFORD, ANGLIA POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
Chav ville
GUILDFORD, UNIVERSITY OF SURREY
Upper middle class dormitory town. Full of stockbrokers and wanna be stockbrokers. The Uni is a campus uni, out of the town itself in the middle of nowhere. Academically good though.
LEICESTER, DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY
Do you like sports? Leicester is a little provincial, but a good town.
LONDON, CITY UNIVERSITY (ST. BARTHOLOMEW)
LONDON, KINGS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF
LONDON, KINGSTON UNIVERSITY AND ST GEORGES HOSPITAL MEDICAL SCHOOL
LONDON, SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY
LONDON, THAMES VALLEY UNIVERSITY
LONDON, UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH
London is expensive. But Kings is probably one of the best in the world for what you want to do.
Kingston is the incarnation of surburbia (I went to school next door in Surbiton). Thames Valley I don't know by that name (I'm getting old)
If you want London, then I would recommend Kings or City for location (central)
OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY
See cambridge
PLYMOUTH, UNIVERSITY OF
Great if you really want to be away from it all. Good beer, good town, but isolated.
SOUTHAMPTON, UNIVERSITY OF
May be one of the best choices if you can cope with squaddies. Lots to do, not too expensive, easy to get around the South from, even easy to get to the continent. Worth looking into.
Sorry it is so few, but you implied that you did not want to stay in the North and there are some places in the Midlands that I can not comment on.
Because that's where I'm going.
Woo! I was right! Well, issue of tenses aside, anyway.

The further south the more expensive it gets...as a general rule anyways...
Leeds is good, just make sure you steer clear of a few estates...
Same goes for manchester...personally i would choose manchester MET, good decent uni with a good teaching reputation.
Southampton's good. Good Uni, ok night life, but is a little expensive (from what I remember).
Luton...not actually as bad as people like to make out. The town's not that great, but good transport links mean you can get out of there easily and quickly. Near London, but not London prices. Uni itself isn't to bad, but put it down as a reserve rather than a first choice.
Plymouth. Hmm...Expensive for where it is. Night life is...ok. Difficult to get out of (awful transport, bloody awful). Not bad for nursing though, and if you get one of the new swanky flats is quite good. The Union's not bad either, and I recommend going to Cafe Sol, have a Terminator. Two of them, and (unless you can really handle your booze) a good night is had by all! :D

Ah, Devonport Dockyard. (Did my work experience in there!).
But when you go to uni you'll be 18...won't you? But, believe it or not, mums are good. They tend to get on their high-horses a bit (wow, I said high-horse!) but they generally calm down.
Otherwise, I'd try for York (its close to home, but is far enough away that should mum want to visit she has to ring first...I say far away, d'you still live in Blackpool?)

It's definitely good to get away from home. But I only moved to Manchester, which was far enough away from Kirkham that I didn't have to worry about my parents dropping round all the time, while at the sametime meaning I could be home in 90 minutes if I wanted to be. It worked well for me anyway.

no I only have to be 17 1/2 to do a nursing diploma, hopefully I should get in to start in autumn this year, although I may have to wait until spring next year when I will be 18, I'll just point out that it won't be long before my friends are starting uni and they're mainly looking down south so I'll be closer to them

It's definitely good to get away from home. But I only moved to Manchester, which was far enough away from Kirkham that I didn't have to worry about my parents dropping round all the time, while at the sametime meaning I could be home in 90 minutes if I wanted to be. It worked well for me anyway.
I don't wanna be near home, I'll be too tempted to take my washing round and stuff and I know my mum would come up with every excuse under the sun to come and visit me most weekends, I wanna get far away where I can learn to be properly independant, some time in the future I wanna go live abroad for a bit so I need to learn to live without my mummy at some point

Is it significant that Miskatonic University has a pentagram in its logo, and features links from its home page to sites interested in H.P. Lovecraft, the Cthulhu Mythos, and a guy who's invented an "Immortality Device"?
I never knew there were semi-overtly satanic institutes of education. :(

A friend of mine is going through the application system for some kind of nursing qualification right now. Her choices include Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, all of which I gather are quite good.
I'm currently at Leicester uni so I have to warn you not to go to Leicester de Montfort, it's a scummy place and all the good people go to Uni of Leicester ;)

Wrong uni. Tink put De Montfort.
Other than saying don't go to De Montfort, also don't go to APU in Chelmsford - a decision you *will* regret for the rest of your life. It's a shite uni, a shite town (I live there, I know), a shite county. Never go to Essex if it can be avoided.
Try Nottingham or Newcastle - both great student cities. Let's be fair, it's not as if you're going to uni to study. Is it?

If you do that, you only do that once. Major hassle, anyway, washing your own clothes is easy.

Ahem...well...speaking from my own experience, I didn't come for the degree.
And Bristol's a nice place as well. Unless you want to drive. Actually, one good point about APU is that they recently renovated the student halls, so they're actually quite nice. And a 3 minute walk from the train station, so you can get out quick, and police station, so very little crime. Other than that, there's nothing to recommend it.

Trust me, the great thing about London is how diverse it is. You got the fast and busy bits in the middle, the cool, leafy relaxing bits on the outside and you can shift between them as you decide.
And if you want to avoid Myrth, you've got roughly a 1 in 9,000,000 chance. Which is nice.
And if you can get used to the busyness, you'll be set for life anywhere else in the world.
Oh, but whatever the hell you do, don't go to Thames Valley University. It's area is beautiful (I live around there) but it was the first uni in the country to be forbidden from issuing degrees. It's that bad. Apart from the cookery department.

I live near Brighton, it's ok. You have the sea, and mild weather, some clubs etc. But the campus is out of the city, on the main road. It's opposite Sussex University, so you share stuff. One thing to note, is that it's a split campus uni. Some of it's in my town, 30min drive away, quieter and cleaner...Brighton has more drugs and is a little shabby...check where you're going to be.
KCL....I fell in love with the place :D so I'm a little biased...but you'll be at Guy's hospital, so a bit East of central London..which is actually in my opinion good, it's a quieter area. However, you'll be spending more on uderground tickets as it's more zones.
KCL is a city uni, whereas Brighton is both city and campus.
Cambridge...one of the country's dampest cities...but pretty. And it has a name of course. Everyone gets an interview so no harm trying.
My friend's going to UCL for Medicine..I'd put you in touch with her but she doesn't use her email...in fact she's stopped communicating with all my friends...but I could give you the msn of some who visited...though not for medical things.
St.Georges is pretty good I've heard...though maybe a little shabby. I think it's in Tooting right? Well if you have any racial perjudices it's a very Asian area.
Norwich...a club or pub for every day of the year. Campus uni with a good safety record. Was raining when I went but dried up...nice big flats. New buildings soon. *cough*drugs*cough* but I think you can find that anywhere. Got two friends here if you want emails. Boys always have ground floor flats.
Nottingham, very big campus. Near the edge of the old city, very green, big dorms, each building with its own style. The ones closest to the classrooms go first of course. I remember a big medical section. Several friends with emails here.
Oxford Brookes...I've heard its the party uni for people who are rich but have bad grades and want the Oxford facilities...Keira Knightly goes there.
York...my dad's best friend's children both went to York to do maths. Good uni I've heard. As much as I can say.
Basically things to consider:
City or campus uni?
Safety record.
Facilities.
Price of accommodation and number of years.
Course content.
Reputation.
Would you be happy here?
Visit as many as poss.
Choose some good unis, some that you'd like to get in to just below, and some nice safeties. After all you have 6 spaces.
Nottingham's a GREAT uni, lovely campus, etc. York is also really good. They're my second and third choices, but you need to visit and look at grades and stuff, it's all individual and you need to do that's right for you. Order prospectuses, visit, nobody else can make the decision for you :)
Been to a lot of the places, but only know about some of the unis, but hope this is helpful.

a diploma in nursing
That being the case only those of you out there who studied nursing are qualified to advise cos the most important thing about the diploma is the hospitals which you do your practice in.
My wife if a Nurse in Leicester and lectures at De Montford. The mentoring here is, apparently excelent. (But then she does a lot of it so she would say that) also concider the cost of accomadation and whether the uni can supply it. Also how dispersed the hospitals that you'll visit are. If the trust covers a hugh area you could do a lot of travelling not all of which you get paid for.
The great thing about being a nurse is that you acn work almost anywhere in the world with very little effort. Some of my wifes colleagues regularly go round the world and pay for it by nursing in the countries they visit.

BRADFORD, UNIVERSITY OF

HUDDERSFIELD, UNIVERSITY OF
Noooooooooo :/ Perhaps it's because i lived there, but if Hudds had been the only Uni option available i'd have gone to work instead...
LEEDS, UNIVERSITY OF
A very 'good' uni, nto a bad city for a night out. Personally i don't like the campus. Crap football team
LEICESTER, DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY
Only been around Leicester once or twice, but i like it.
LIVERPOOL, EDGE HILL COLLEGE OF HIGHER EDUCATION
LIVERPOOL, JOHN MOORES UNIVERSITY
I think my sister's giong to John Moores, not really sure. think it's a better uni than Edge Hill, tho again i'm not 100%. Liverpool's a fun city, bit dingy but there's some fun places if you can find them.
LONDON, CITY UNIVERSITY (ST. BARTHOLOMEW)
LONDON, KINGS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF
LONDON, KINGSTON UNIVERSITY AND ST GEORGES HOSPITAL MEDICAL SCHOOL
LONDON, SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY
LONDON, THAMES VALLEY UNIVERSITY
LONDON, UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH
Personally i wouldn't want to study in Nodnol, the city's too big and always busy, it's more expensive than anywhere else, too many tourists.
MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
MANCHESTER, UNIVERSITY OF
Good night out in Manchester
NEWCASTLE, UNIVERSITY OF NORTHUMBRIA AT
Northumbria is 'the' place to be atm, with Newcastle a close second. Not sure if that will have changed by the time you get there but i doubt it. Cheap, student-oriantated, and a pretty good night out.
NOTTINGHAM, UNIVERSITY OF
Beautiful campus, great city, good night out, cheap beer. Very popular tho, you'll need AAA for most subjects (i'm possibly the only person on my degree who did a levels and got in without three As ;)).
SHEFFIELD, UNIVERSITY OF
My favourite city in the world. If it hadn't been so close to home i'd have definately been there. Very 'good' uni aswell.
YORK, UNIVERSITY OF
Never been on a night out in York and i've heard differing opinions from different people, but i think the majority opinion is: very nice city, nice uni, not great nightlife.
Personally i think the most important thing is making sure a) you like the course and b) you're likely to get accepted before thinking of where it is, what the city/accom is like.
You can use the league tables to find out which Unis perform best but remember that the 'good' universities tend to be poor on a one-to-one level: the focus is more on learning than being taught, and that doesn't suit everyone.

Most definatelty not. Most 'good' universities are elitist institutions, but Oxbridge is by far the worst. They make you jump thru hoops to get there and relish having the most awkward and complicated admission process, just because they can. Christ, they think they're so good they insist you hand in your application 3 months before any other Uni does, and for what? The lowest teaching hours in the country as far as i'm aware.
True, most of the people who attend are incredibly clever, and you benefit from that. You get to rub shoulders with some obscenely rich people who went to public schools, and you get to think you're better than other people who didn't go (ok, not most people do this, but definately a few).
Don't get me wrong, i have some good mates who are at Oxford and Cambridge, but personally i hate almost everything the institutions stand for.

that's my list of options, I was just wondering if there are people out there who have been to any of the cities and found them particularly nice/horrible, I dunno if I will definately move away from home but I'm seriously considering it
No, no, no, no, and NO!
What you need to do is immigrate to the U.S., and attend the University of Pittsburgh. This place is great. Not just the University, but the entire city, especially the borough of Oakland, where Pitt is located. Great people, great food, and great atmosphere. And, if it's your thing, you can watch a game of American Football at Heinz Field, which is a few miles up-river. Pittsburgh will not disappoint.
(joking, of course, but Pittsburgh really is that cool. You should see it, damnit)

What parts of nursing interest you?
Figure that out and then apply and consider the places that have what interest you... there are lots of different things you can do with a nursing degree....
-what kind of patients do you want to work with? (age, medical issues,)
-do you want to be mainly clinical or very much with the patients or more of an administrative head in nursing?
-What kind of doctors do you want to work with?
etc, etc... Does that help?

I would look at the programs and see what kind of doctors/research work is going on and what kind of connections you could make at (or through) the different nursing schools.
Because I'm sure all of them will give you a good technical background the question is what kinds of medicine do you want to be steaped in - have connections too. (Assuming you want to make a career out of this.)Adults or geriatrics?
Personally I don't know much about the nursing schools across the pond there. (yes, another U.S. person here)...
Do you want to work with doctor who are doing cutting edge procedures or doctors whose practices have been established and are routine?

That's a good plan of action... Is there a part of medicine that you are drawn to or just totally facinates you? That may be a good place to start.
:)
Good luck! Figuring out where you want to be and what you want to do is not always easy!!

Another good thing to do since one career counselor (or no one individually for that matter) knows everything about a particular industry... You should also consider talking to a alumni from a few of the colleges
(because it their training was free they will probably have less of a tendancy to "sell" the school to you... -as alumni do in the states a lot- so that could be a really good way of figuring out where you want to fit.)

Soton is good apparently, know a few people there. Also know people at Kings. They're loving it, but its not cheap to live in London in your later years.
At the end of the day, you should base your decision on the course. Don't pick a university based on the surroundings if the course is shit, and vice versa.

I'm at the other university in Sheffield, Hallam University, and on the subject of sheffield, it's a nice enough city, but it's a total mess at the moment. There's major building work going on all over the city, which is going to be going on until 2008, or something like that.

Don't know if I said this last time I posted. Sorry if I repeat.
Don't worry too much about the uni cos nursing (diplomas at least) tends to be carried out in a slightly separate way I suppose cos it's under control of the local trust.
The most important thing to consider is that trust, where you will almost cetainly get your first job and will definately do all your practical placements. Placements are a hugh part of the diploma.
Find out about local trusts and remember that although you are studying adult nursing you'll still have to do phyciatric and kids and oldies etc etc.
Most of the practical lecturers will come from the trusts.
Check out the trust that appear to perform best and remember a country trust may cover a large amount of ground and you may ahve to travel a lot.
Whereas it may cost you more to live in a city areaif you cant get in residences.
