I myself have been around since June 10, 2003. That was the last day of seventh grade. Now, I'm 2/3 done with my freshman year of high school. But that's not the point.

What do you all remember from the good old days? And whom?

I remember Marathon's deletion.
I remember Satan, that annoying guy who kept popping into my Wicca thread to insult us. He eventually got deleted.
I remember the phpBB forums, before the 65-page cap because of server trouble.
Damn, that server trouble. Sometimes it took five refreshes to get to the page.
I remember the first Volcano club. How many differently-named clubs have there been since then?
I remember the "last person to post here wins" thread. Before threads had a last person to post.
I remember when everybody made worship threads for other posters. I made one for Lunatic Goofballs.
I remember these forums before anybody debated abortion, gay marriage, politics, or anything else of real-world consequence.
That thread about the funniest stupid things your classmates have said? There were plenty of threads like that before.
Lunatic Goofballs, Bottle, and Spoffin used to create threads a lot more often too.
I wonder if 1 Infinite Loop is still delegate of the West Pacific?
I remember how everyone used to debate whether [violet] was Max Barry. Heck, I don't think I've even seen [violet] post in the last year.
And what happened to [mantle] and [dredd]? Nobody ever knew who they were either.

Ahhh... the good old days.

He's delegate of the East Pacific. I have a puppet there.
(1 Infinite Loop is a he, right?)
I remember how everyone used to debate whether [violet] was Max Barry. Heck, I don't think I've even seen [violet] post in the last year.
[violet] posted The Game Mod Olympics thread in early February, and was in threads about a technical problem with NS and a supposed virus being spread through NS that didn't really exist.

If I remember correctly, [violet] also said something in some thread about releasing old nation names. I don't remember ever seeing [violet] post outside of Moderation, though.

07-03-2005, 07:20
My first night on NS there was a big invasion of The Pacific in an attempt to overthrow Francos Spain, and while I never got involved in those politics it was the reason I stayed initially.

That particular invasion was brought about by a temporary glich in the old system that allowed someone to take advantage, but she (I think) was beat back. It seemed very dramatic.

I don't really know the those particular people who are leaving since I'm a newbie. I shouldn't be posting this either because I'm going to become a scapegoat. However, I am extremely upset just with the fact people are leaving. I talk a lot with some of the old NSers, and I don't want to see any of them go.

I would like to point out to people a few things before they consider leaving. First, a lot of controversial political actions have occurred since 2003 when I believe NS started. I personally, came to NS because I was frustrated with the world and I thought it would be a constructive way of getting it out. People have not become more shallow or ridiculous. People are just cynical and upset. Some don't want to del with most politics, like me, because it has no purpose. Others feel like spam and entertainment are not conducive to this forum. So before you leave please realize the world has dramatically changed since NS started. At least consider taking a break instead of leaving for good.

I think part of the problem is the mods - on the one hand they are better at keeping out trolls now, which is a good thing, but they also ban so much fun stuff now. I could never start a worship thread now without it being locked as spam.

I agree with you Zincite. I think spam can be "good". I tend to post "spammy" threads, but manage my opinions in the debates I care about most. I think there should be a political thread and an entertainment/spam thread that way people can talk about what they want without be bombardded with what they don't want.

Yeah I think in Technical I once suggested splitting General into Debate and Chat, or adding a Politics forum. People told me they didn't want TWO general forums hogging their RP server, but now that we're on Jolt we don't have server problems anymore, so maybe someone should bring it up again?

I remember....

1. When there were no Mods, and believe me, they add a lot to this game.
2. When regions had no Founders and regional controls that can ban or close borders (actually, these were instituted in large measure because of a particularly ugly invasion of my region, The Heartland, back in March-April 2003)
3. When Marathon was still a respected power in the game, before his deletion
4. When no one had ever heard of region-crashing (at least in The Heartland)
5. When the NS Forums were so unreliable and slow that many regions, including ours, created offsite regional forums to keep the game going
6. When Cokekila had not yet discovered the population bug and become a super-populated nation
7. The Amerigo Slave-Trade War, one of the first RPs I was involved with on the NS Forums (and still one of the best, to my mind)
8. When SeOCC first proposed an international banking system for NS

In some ways nowdays is better, and some ways the good ol' days were better. The problem with now is that a lot of people with character have been forced out because of the strictness that is now prevalent. The average age of General regulars has dropped a significant amount. I do remember you though, and you seemed to be quieter back then. Thus the good ol' days were better.

i must admit i am a little sad seeing a bunch of older players quitting all at once. i've left for long stretches a few times, but i never felt the need to quit flat out because i knew i would dip back in at some point. the forum definitely has a different feel now, and i can't help but look back fondly on the Good Ol Days, but i'm still hanging around because there are new faces with enough to hold my interest. things seem to be in a bit of a slump right now, but i've seen these forums slump before...i'm gonna wait out the slump and see what comes next :).

Its funny but when I think back to the posters I miss its the Nazis that seem to rise to the head of the list - if nothing else they gave something to engage with, and it was quite entertaining reading and disassembling some of the more naive cut and paste articles from Stormfront. Wasn't Schorgenland the one that posted one of those race articles which used as its primary source the 11th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica? - an edition which still presented the existence of the luminiferous aether as a scientific fact...

I remember the very beginning, or at least sometime near then. I remember having 700 million citizens about the time when all the earliest people were hitting the billion mark, so I guess I was around near the start.

I stuck around 5 or 6 months until my friend who found the site got deleted for some reason. I remember the slow forum loading and people complaining about their swastika flags getting deleted. Other than that, though, the forum isn't a whole lot different. Bush conspiracy threads were around since Day One, I remember. I remember passing 500 posts with my first nation, and thinking that was pretty neat.

More recently, I remember the pre-Election 2004 craziness, wild predicitons and thread after thread dedicated to the latest bump in the polls. I remember arguing with Incertonia, a lot. Those were wild times though.

I remember when there were no moderators, no regional controls, and Max's forums. I remember when 100 Nations of Conquest was a region to be "feared." I remember Parrotoga, Sheol, Satan, Marathon, Distributed Thought and The Most Glorious Hack, Ackbar, Reploid Productions, Neutered Sputnik, Menelmacarr, Cogitation, and Unfree People as players who regularly made thoughtful and interesting posts on the forums. Goobergunchia, Qaaolchoura and Danya posted a lot more than they do now.

Loop was an invader, Myrth, who represented Europe, was busy plotting with the ACC to invade various regions, Santa Barbara was always at war with some nation or another and Francos Spain was as yet unheard of. At that time there was some other dictator in the Pacifc who ended up being ejected from the game and I always wondered if he came back as Francos Spain. Rats, can't remember his name.

Actually, being an anarchist, I prefer the olden days. The game is more controlled now but I liked it better when it was edgier and more glitchy. Nowadays, the tech forum is mostly used by people whining about how this or that doesn't work but back then, it was a great place to go to get information about how the game worked and how to exploit various glitches.

Har! You're the one who brought up the standard "you're just bitter cuz you weren't one of us" ploy, not I. I'm "acting all big?" WTF. You need to look at your own words when you tell me to grow up.

And you're glorifying the old days, saying that now there are less people "with character" and the good old boys have been "forced" away, as if the Present just came and evilly kicked the good Past's ass and now you're missing it. You miss the old days? Why? I see that as sad, not something I am envious of. I don't miss the old days, at least no more than I miss the future days not yet arrived.

I remember when we would flame, troll, and spam, and not get a warning from anybody except Marathon (not that I'm proud of it now, but now a lot of new players don't even have a chance to get past that).
I remember when Sirocco was a spammer.
I remember quote pyramids and the 1,ooo,ooo,ooo posts thread.
I recall when I had to spam in the last post on the first "You know you're playing NS too much" thread.
I remember when Enodia was an active mod.
I remember when I had three stickies at once.
I remember the great Mars land rush.
I remember the spam-addicts of General: Norm, Ny, NEE, some others who I talked with and now can't remember.
I recall the first deletion of Marathon, and that Marathon was certain he would soon be a mod, right up until the day of his deletion.
I remember The Palestinian Empire, Corinthe, The Basenji, and many others who weren't even well known in their day.
I remember fighting with Marathon, Ithuania, and Christofi.
I remember when The Global Market was active in the UN forum.
I remember everything that came after moderation.
I remember the Bastard NS Moderator and Bastard NS Player from Hell threads.
I remember the modification of Cog, Steph, and all of the subsequent mods, but I don't recall the orders.
I also recall constantly fighting with TG in Tech when he was a player, and being surprised at what a good mod he actually made.
I remember when SalusaSecondus went region hopping.
I remember when we all thought that Francos Spain would be out of the Pacific in no time.
I remember nagging [violet] until they gave us a gameplay forum, then finding it invaded by RP elitists intent on gaining a third forum for roleplaying.
I recall the NS first anniversary issue. Still have that on a number of my puppets.

As I recall, he even got his own addition to the lexicon: Normacking replaced spamming as the word of choice. Although oddly enough, Parra and one other guy (can't recall the name. . .blast! He was a fairly decent guy, too.) eventually took the top posting spot away from him.

As for the overall quality of the forums, there is some good and some bad. On the bad side, there used to be some really good debaters like Menelmecar and Invendentia who provided some really thoughtful posts who aren't around anymore. On the other hand, we don't have to listen to Danya bitch about how nobody loves her and how ugly she is. So all in all, a fair trade.

I've been here for less than a year, but does having read (and enjoyed) a million of these threads count for anything?
I even know all the events you veterans remember best as the stuff of NS legend. There are some events that seem to figure storngly in the NS collective memory: Marathon, Francos Spain, the old forum collapsing, [violet] ambiguity, etc.

I recall when Lazarus never had more than a couple dozen nations at a time, and there was never any activity in there.

I recall a lot, but I suppose that's all for now.
Ahh, sweet nostalgia indeed.

Hey bud. Havent seen ya around in a while...

I remember all that...I remember the first time I "met" Reppy, it was in the quote pyramid thread. I remember that the server was sooo slow it was a race to see who could post the next pyramid first and it was always server lag that made the difference...

And, Parra, it's good to see you're still around. Tell Germ I said 'Hi' (if he even remembers me).

WOW...I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read that...

It's all about the small victories in life, isnt it?

i remember Paratoga's theatrics, Marathons charm, Philandrea's wroth, The Inquisitor's obsession with Parra, and Nazi influx, and so much more...

Whatever happened to all those nazis? It was like a swarm of locusts descended on the forums and then disappeared as mysteriously as it had arrived. lol

Damn. Those were some good times...

I remember that huge slave war in, what was it, Amerigo?
I remember the Melkor Wars (vaugely, I never fought in them).
I remember when I started the first thread using only smiles (at least, I think I was first). That craze died pretty fast when the mods killed all the threads... ;)
I remember the contriversy over whether or not the Underwater Bubble could fire nukes (I defended their actions, rather poorly, in retrospect).
I remeber when I discovered that Sirocco had a map named after him in StarCraft (check it out, its there!)
And of course, I remember the change in forums, which makes everything I've said impossible to confirm. :)

That looks about right. :) What was the text on it again, something like "The enemy has flamed you on the forums, there is no recourse."

Classic. It's good to know that NS has friends in high places.

Edit: Quoting reminds me: I remember reading war threads with around 20-30 layers of quotes-in-quotes-in-quotes-etc.

I remember a time when people like demoness were common nation-known names...
And I of course remember the amerigo slave-trade war(Ineptia, didnt I bomb your civi ships?)

One last one from me (at least for now): I remember that there was one guy, long ago, whose name I have forgotten, who managed to set a banning record (I think). It seemed like everyday, I'd find that he'd come back with a nation which obviously belonged to the same person, and start flaming up a storm in General. I think he got banned in less than two minutes of creation, one time. I'm a little fuzzy on all the facts, and the orignal posts are now long gone, but I know that this happened.

Really wish I could remember the name...

I remember that...there was even a thread started about how quickly his nations were deleted from when he posted. I was the Mod responsible for the DEAT action, in fact. I think I managed to delete the nation in under 2mins or something ridiculously fast for how lagged the forums were...

Satan
Parra

Beeks (and the "create a Beeker protest)
Roan (I still love her :fluffle: )
So many other things.

WOW this is an old thread. I've never had a thread of mine turn up so much later on! In fact, the only thread of mine that ever stayed on the front page for more than an hour without my surreptitious bumping was when I finally succumbed and made an abortion thread.

Hey bud. Havent seen ya around in a while...

Haven't seen you around in a while either.
Actually, haven't really been around since Jolt, though every so often I try coming back to the forums.
Wasn't even quite sure if you were still here, but I didn't want to post that I remembered you in case you were. (Same with Slaggy).

It's amazing how many people are still around that I didn't expect to find.
And looks like some people like Parra are back again, eh? (Heh, I dunnit myself twice).

Is it just me, or have we been hit with a wave of nostaligia in the past week or so? There've been a few threads of a similar nature. It's definitely not a bad thing, mind, just interesting.

I remember The Red Arrow...

...He amused me in a disturbing way...

The Blue Viper...running around...flashing everyone...damn if only I had a camera...:(

And me, young, and still not giving a flying fuck about the world outside America. Damn that was just around January of 2004. I was 13 at the time...in the 8th grade I believe.
