Worst. Week. Ever. on NS Thread

Eichen
07-03-2005, 06:23
This has definitely been the worst week I've ever seen here on NS.
Everyone is quibbling. Nobody is debating. And too many people are dropping out of General altogether.

So what's the problem(s)?

Let's try to get to the bottom of this now, nip some probs in the bud, and move on towards more happy posting.

Let's also avoid words like left, right, gay, straight, Christian, Atheist, Rep. Dem., liberal, conservative, etc. Personal attacks of any kind not framed in a constructive manner will get a swift report to the mods!
I'm not a tattletale, but this is an emergency situation.

I'm just afraid General will be a wasteland of rabid n00bs and whackjobs soon, if everyone with a touch of character opts out.

Any suggestions?

A lack of interesting threads, and when there finally is one almost no one reads it all the way through and they just post some stuff replying to the first post and ignoring the fact that everything they said has already been posted.

All I know is that whenever anyone tries to discuss something, half a dozen bozos apear and start throwing insults around. These come from all points in the political/religious/economic spectrum. No position is any worse or better than any other for this.

I propose that those who wish to discuss, in a civilised manner, the issues of the day should simply disregard the bozos. It is a policy that I adopted as of last night, as I do not wish to be driven away by those few that have nothing to contribute. I had been being sarcastic, but this was counter productive, so I changed strategy.

Yeah! Let us limit free speech. I don't want anyone offended. I don't want to hear the following words: red, blue, chicken, steak, singing, rain, beer, yellow, horse, job, taxes, ideas, freedom, culture, rainbow, jazz, and any personal pronoun.

Maybe, we can just eliminate all words. That way nobody can be offended ever. :headbang:

Sometimes it's hard to have a decent conversation with people that are thirteen years old (or act like it).

Personally I don't post that often anyways (in two years I have posted 253 times, or around .36 posts per day).

But there have been times where I've said "screw it" and left a thread because it was going nowhere.

I agree with Spaam. This has been a long time coming.

I've gotten so tired of the same regurgitated topics I can remember debating two years ago. There comes a point where all that can be said has been said. Despite my post count, I've more or less checked out of the vast majority of what goes on in this forum. I really only post in unique topics; stuff that you don't see around too often. The general religious/political thread is just repeated over and over and over again. I've found that to be my main source of disdain for the forum.

All forums experience ebbs and flows. Right now just might be a low time for NS. Soon fresh blood will come in and this forum will surge again. It is up to you if you want to stick it out.

Also, it is always up the individual to allow any words to offend him or her.

Nationstates has become democratic and postmodern.

It has degenerated into "all opinions have equal weight, there is no such thing as correct or incorrect because there are a hundred equally valid angles on every conceivable thing."

It's not even that. This kind of exodus has happened here in the past, and the forum has managed to get along just fine anyway. Remember when we moved to Jolt. Everyone was leaving because the forums "weren't the same" and everyone was saying that General would be no more. Yet here it is, 6-8 months later, and General is just fine. All these doomsday scenarios about General are just ludicrous. The forum will be fine.

On request of Eichen.... repost.

Everyone seems to be taking off. Mostly do the lack of anything worth doing on here. I still have fun, but that's because I like doing the pointless borderline spam threads. Maybe this is a sign to all of us that it is time to be more rational in our debates, with more facts and articulate opinions, and less personal attacks, fewer trolls, and less flaming. I've quit posting on the political threads because that is all they are these days. Maybe, just maybe, we can all get along despite our differing views, and once again have intelligent debates. Maybe we would lose less of our e-friends would move on. Maybe more of us spammers would quite spamming and debate.

and this

On leaving.... well, some stay gone, others don't. But I for one feel kind of attatched to some of these people, even though I've never met them. but really, i think sometimes people that post on here are really antisocial, and become inwardly agitated when confronted with this issue. most people would be far happier knowing people like this in RL, to debate with , and joke with all day....but they dont. so it becomes a tug of war within ones mind, whether to go out and attempt to create the online haven in daily life, or to remain frustrated with the fact that this is basically typed friendship that certain people depend far too much on....

i hope that made sense. i am feeling dense right now.
