Conservative Canada

I often wonder what Canada would be like if it were run by a more Bush Administration-like government. How different would Canada's place be in the world?

It wouldn't be known as a bastion for civil liberties, that's for sure. It would probably have a lot more polluting factories, too.

How would it be different you say? I probably wouldn't live here anymore for starters.

If that were the case, I doubt Canada would be an independent country at all.

They wouldn't disagree with the US Government so much :)

And that would be a bad thing.

Because everyone knows that Canadian dissent affects American politics.

Also, liberal Democrats would be suicidal!

There would be 32,000,000 odd people screaming for free healthcare.
A conservative government like the US us highly unlikely.
A conservative government like the US Democratic party, is more likely.

Well, I do think we should clarify: you could still have a conservative government and be nothing like Bush--its not exactly difficult to run a country better than he does.

I'm really adverse to the misconception that the Tories would simply hand Canada over to the States on a silver platter--just because someone is Blue doesn't mean that they're not fiercely patriotic. A strong, fiscally responsible government would have the leverage to be fiercely independant, and work to improve Canada's world image in several ways: strengthening our economy, increasing our credibility/accountability amoung our allies in the UN and NATO, and having a defined, cooperative yet firm foreign policy.

Now, a conservative prime minister and cabinet would probably get along well with a republican president, that much is true--but several other things will also be true: Bush will still be a moron, and more importantly, good relations with the United States is a GOOD thing. Canada's an open economy--we need our trade markets open. not having good relations with partners likethe States is bad news. We can disagree on things--but being rude is no way to conduct foreign policy. To go to the extremes that our previous Prime Minister and his cabinet were, for example, is just going way, way too far.

I'd move to europe.

Honestly though, if the conservatives had won... I don't know what would have happened. We'd probably end up with severe cuts to healthcare, severe tax cuts, I'm sure we'd be pitching in in Iraq and have signed the missile defense shield thing. They'd probably try to make gay marriage illegal altogether or make it so the provinces that don't preform gay marriages don't have to recognize marriages preformed in other provinces...

Really, though, Stephen Harper would have been a shitty PM, he didn't appear to have too much pride in his country for one thing, he went off to Fox News to badmouth Canada for fuck's sake.

Edit in response to the above post. You are aware that Paul Martin is a fiscal conservative, right? He'll probably do better keeping the budget balanced than the conservatives would have while still providing us with good social services.

I don't like either Paul Martin or Stephen Harper but Harper has a cooler name. Paul Martin is too boring. Damn geezer.

What about Jack Layton. La-la-la-Layton. It just rolls of the tongue, doesn't it?

Your government would suck. Don't ponder on it.
