The latest issue of 2600 magazine has an excellent article on spyware removal. You should go to a book store and pick up a copy.

Keep away! UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN! Here is a bell. I'd like you to ring it.

Don't you have any pop-up blockers running? Or did you, but now they've gone for some unknown reason?

well obviouly clear out cookies and history and change homepage to something nice and run everything you have. Its often worth googling any names that come up and deleting any files that a reliable site suggests (be carefull with this) If that still doesn't help hyjack this (http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/) is probably worth a try (read what the site says first though)

Run Adaware and Microsoft's AntiSpyware.

When you think all the spyware is gone, run Windows Update and install every update it lists. You may have to reboot and run Windows Update again several times to get them all.

After that, get a better browser. I recommend Firefox. Only use Internet Explorer if you absolutely have to, and only for websites you trust.

It's believe it has attached itself to internet explorer. None of the ad aware symantac spy bot hijack adware removers have been able to remedy it. I quarantine/remove these bad files and it does nothing.

Right now, not many pop ups are flying up in my face, only 2 in the past..nvm spoke too soon.

My pop up blockers are on, and scam blocker and Anti-Spyware. I deleted all my cookies uninstalled and reinstalled Windows. It's still here. I didn't do a complete wipe like I did before. That's what I will end up having to do. Had a virus on this pc few months ago, and it never really got back working perfectly. Ever since that virus my recycle bin has been dead (nothing I delete shows up in it) and anything I delete or uninstall still shows up in file search. But other than that it was fine til I hit that bad site this morning.

BTW Thanks for the advice all :)

Get Firefox (or Opera), disable access to IE and move on with your life.

As a last ditch solution, format your hard drive and reinstall your OS. It is a pain, but so long as you regularly back up files, you really won't lose anything.

How does one disable acces to IE?
Delete it. You know IE works best when it isn't on your hard drive anymore. Stick to Firefox/Mozilla.

Mozilla Firefox.

Also, Microsoft Anti-spyware (do a google search). It's free, and it works!

Ditch Ad-aware, it clashes with spybot sometimes anyways, get Spyware blaster and spywaregaurd, both run harmoniously with spybot.

Free downloads at majorgeeks. You can also get an MRU blaster there if you really want to keep anything from efffecting your computer.

I won't be doing too much anything else 'til I do a complete wipe. I'm wanting to remove everything off here and start over. Worked last time.
Couple of hours ago I disabled IE. But..

" Internet Explorer is, unfortunately, built into Windows in all versions after 98 and can't be fully removed. No matter what you do, IE will still be available in a limited capacity for the purpose of running Windows Update, which requires Internet Explorer to run. It will not be generally available to users, however, and since you set your default browser to whatever you installed earlier, IE will never open on its own when you click a link offline. "

In my case I have a trojan or something, so it is still opening to slam me with pop ups.

What a pain. When I (hopefully) get it back right, I will Not be using IE for everyday browsing. Wish I had read that browser thread on here before this happened. I wasn't aware that Internet Explorer was as vulnerable as it is.
Thought I just had bad luck in the past by gettign trojans worms etc., still think it might have something to do with it. Seems like almost everytime I venture outside my regularly surfed sites into unknown territory this crap happens.

This happened when I saw a link about the band member leaving Korn. The link didn't say what site it was from. I figured it was safe because it was on my yahoo home page. It isn't their fault, and probably not the site I got it froms fault.
I saw mtv written on the page once I got there , but didn't have anytime to read anything.. I got bombarded immediatly.. got scared and started closing everything out.

Had this problem, as well. Usually means that your browser has been khacked by some sort of virus. If you use IE, just do a system restore to a date before the problems began to occur (this is what worked for me.) If you have some other browser, completely uninstall it(this means manually deleting all references in the registry to it, as well as using add/remove.) Hope this helps.

This (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm) site does a good job of covering most anti-spyware stuff.

I'd recommend Opera over Mozilla or Firefox for more than just security reasons, but here are two security reasons.

The latest non-beta version of Opera has 2 unpatched "Secunia Advisories", but Firefox has 3 unpatched and 5 that are partially fixed, and Mozilla has 2 unpatched and 7 that are partially fixed.
According to Opera.com, "Though the actual strength of encryption at a site is determined by the site itself, and not by the browser, Opera offers automatic 128-bit encryption -- the highest available security of any Web browser."

Also, based on the tests at Virus Bulletin (http://www.virusbulletin.com/), I think NOD32 is the best antivirus program.

Ok … directions

Download

Spybot search and destroy from www.download.com
Download adaware from same place

Install both
Update definitions on both

Restart
As your machine starts up hit the f8 key (early during splash screen or post screen) this should bring you to a screen … choose start windows in safe mode with networking

When it is started up run scan of both programs

If this does not work get hijackthis and run scan in safe mode just like the other ones

If this does not work get back to me and we will go through a manual removal/shutoff in msconfig

I was having a nightmare with some nasty thing that kept opening popups every 10-15 minutes (The ones that pretend to be a fake warning message about your system having too much spyware on it), and more annoyingly, kept installing a CoolWebSearch variant browser hijacker.

Then, I got a new AdAware update this morning, and it killed them all, and they haven't come back. Ain't life grand?
