Pennsylvania, the Keystone State. Second to enter the Union. Historically, a key defender of civil and political rights; played a huge role in the Revolutionary War, and is currently one of the states providing the majority of troops in Iraq.

I live in Lancaster county, which is where a large concentration of Amish and Mennonites live - for those of you not in the know, the Amish and Mennonites are Protestant Christian sects that have forsaken modern convenience in order to live a simple life, in harmony with God and nature; they do not use electricity and generally don't go to school beyond the 6th grade, although there are exceptions, and the Mennonites have really begun to liberalize in the last few decades. The poor Amish - good folk, I would add - have to deal with being treated as a tourist attraction. It's a damn shame.

I go to school near Pittsburgh. It's kind of a shitty city, if you ask me. Philadelphia is better.

I've driven by one. It's a small one near the Houston Ship Channel. It night, the smoke coming from its stacks is greenish, smells like vomit and pine sol, and makes me light-headed. Armco Steel, that's it.

It's actually much like a Paper Mill. But, it's worse. It smells like a Paper Mill (the vomit factor) plus the metallic, Pine-Sol-ish smell that comes from iron and coke.

It is indeed nasty, but the pollution actually isn't as bad as what comes from the many dozens of Petrochemical Plants and Oil Refineries in the area.

Houston has more industrial complexes than any other city in the world --- and it's made clear the instant you get in the Pasadena area. You can see smokestacks and holding tanks for miles, all the way to Texas City.

Drive on the Independence Freeway in Pasadena. That expression will gain an entirely new definition. And who's suddenly decided to burn plastic in a crude fire that he made in the floorboard.

Okay, to decode the SoCal version and try and make this clearer...

To hike through the redwoods all I need do is go out my door and turn right. There is a trail through the woods right outside my door. The more north you get, the truer that becomes. We are covered in beautiful woods and nature areas and at least in Northern Califiornia our development is controled to protect these green areas.

Most of us live in median weather areas and have 'visitable' seasons. People often criticize us for not having seasons, but we just don't have to live with them. If I want snow, it's a short drive to the snow. I want beach weather it's another short drive. The weather has never adversly(sp) affected my life, I don't have to change my plans based on the weather.

The power outages really just outlined that we where too reliant on Texas and corrupt business men for our power. Not making headlines is the rise of power co-ops that will rid us of the stain of Enrons.

Disasters have an exagerated effect because people forget how big we are. If a fire or earthquake hits LA it no more effects me than if it hit Boston, and the other way around. And really nasty earthquakes are few and far between. I'll take an earthquake every 80 years over hurricane and tornado season...

I appoligize for our governer. I also appologize for the potential that Rob Riener might run against him next time around. No one is perfect. (and between you and me, it's SoCals fault).

I'm not saying that every other state sucks in comparison, just that I love my state, it's a great place to be.
