Ordinarily I use jail, but if I'm writing I might use gaol at some point or another.

Searched for Jail. Gaol is not listed as it is an alternative spelling not a synonym or something like that.
I tend to use gaol, but I am old school British

Jail, gaol is similar to goal which I use a lot in soccer RPs.
