Been posting on a number of heavy topics all evening, so let's all have a friendly debate on the merits of "grey" versus "gray" as spelling choices. Enjoy!

I like gray. It's one letter off from being gravy or gay. Gay gray gravy?

In retrospect, perhaps I like 'grey' better.

a pro for GREY is the wonderfully easy typing aspect with "rey" being easily accessable when used in conjunction.

Grey is a colour. "Gray" is a "color".

I didn't learn her Majesty's English to see it corrupted by analphabets, so grey it is.

Never mind what I voted for in the poll, I didn't mean to click what I clicked.

YourDictionary.com (http://www.yourdictionary.com) seems to regard "grey" and "gray" as interchangeable variations.

The Online Etymology Dictionary (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=gray) is more helpful, telling us that it's another of those annoying trans-Atlantic variations - gray is American, grey is British/Commonwealth.

Neo-Anarchist's combination "greay" isn't too far off; the Old English form was "græg".

As a citizen of a Commonwealth country, I prefer grey.

On a side note, COLOUR is "Her Majesty's English". They added the U in a spark of nose-thumbing to the French, whom they were at war with at the time. THe French and English had previously both gone fine without the U.

If you want to use "grey," try changing the settings in [Format]-->[Language]-->[Set Language]-->[English (U.K.)]
And I live in California, but I prefer "grey," in addition to "colour," "manoeuvre," "aluminium," and all those other British spellings. The English civilization invented the English language; that's why it's called "English." Therefore, they are the only ones who can logically claim to have the correct version of it. Long Life to the Queen. Though it does sometimes confuse my teachers to hear "aluminium" and other altered pronunciations coming out of a Norwegian accent, and to have to grade work with so many more U's than they're used to. One actually refused to grade my paper until I corrected all the "typos," as he called them. Sick bastard.

Earl Grey is the best tea, as well as being the man responsible for the Great Reform Act of 1832.

No other reasons are really necessary, though 'gray' is, to my eyes, rather ugly. 'Grey' seems to glide better.

I don't think anyone actually wants Tone's head on a pike (definitely not my pike! Took me ages to get the bloody thing clean after last time)

However Maggie could be dug up after mortem, quartered and her pieces displayed above the gates of major towns of the realm. :D
Let's see - I believe it is London for the head (King William's tower), York for the torso and the limbs distributed to places like Manchester, Lancaster etc.

It's a dream

To get serious, a lot of the linguistic difference is down to people like Dr. Johnson and the bloody Victorians.

Back in the good old days, spelling was optional. Up until the late 18th century you could use what you liked. Gray, grey, graye, grae and greye have all been found in mediaeval literature.

There is a school of thought that says that the Americans still have spelling closer to the "original" (whatever that is) and the laying down of spelling laws in Britain by the Victorians resulted in a lot of our spellings.

Another one says that a multi-cultural nation (like America) with people speaking all sorts of languages and learning English as they went would lead to a simpler set of spelling rules.

And colour rose above its vanquished foe, color, lifting a sword as the audience tilted their thumbs downward- the American word's fate had been decided. Giving a bloodied gasp, color died. These two, now veterans, left the field- one on his feet, one in a bag. And fresh into the linguistics arena came two fresh combatants, eager, ambitious, not caring for the weariness and broken souls of those who came before them. On one side of the bloody sands, Complete drew a blade. On the other, Compleat raised a shield. And so the war began.

Yeah....6*9 is definitely 54. 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Gosh, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out....

Gray is a lot cooler than grey. Grey shouldn't even be the same as gray. Grey, according to Hooked on Phonics, should be prounounced "Gree."
