instead of spending all your money, go out for a walk, or stay home alone. See if she's willing to play Halo 2 with you. Or any other two player game (my fav is soul caliber). If you don't like my ideas, just call her up and ask if you can go dutch.

I like Silence and Nothing's idea which sometimes works surprisingly well. My own suggestion for a low-budget date would be to simply have a picnic at the beach. It's always pretty nice and most girls love the idea.
*EDIT* I don't know if the idea would work with you, because I'm used to living in California so close to the beaches and usually having the sun shining.
i hope you were joking about halo 2.
just go for a drive, or watch movies. chicks love pirates of the carribean and troy cuz they get to ogle johnny depp orlando bloom and brad pitt. she'll be like putty in your hands ;)
No, no, oh GOD no! Don't you even think about watching Troy!

Things I have actually done on first dates:
Gone skydiving(not cheap)
Gone clowning. I brought my current wife on our first date to a hospital and got her dressed in clown get-up and we entertained sick children. She got a chance to see how silly and sweet I am at the same time. :)
Gone naked. I took a first date to a nude beach. :)
Gone chessing. I met one of my girlfriends at a college chess club. Our first date was to a world chess championship game between Kasparov and Karpov.
Gone crazy. I took my date to one of my informal rugby games. She actually played for a while. SHe got a chance to see just how stupid things can get when I am with my buddies. I believe that was the day Ape powerbombed me into four feet of mud. SHe got it on tape. I still have the video on a tape in the house somewhere. (edit: She was a psycho. Her whole family were psychos. Her brother put me in the hospital. But we had quite an interesting relationship for about six months.)

This is a wonderful idea, actually. If your girlfriend enjoys playing, any kind of two player game is always fun. Soul Caliber is a great one, because its fairly easy to learn, if she's never played it before. Or, at least, it was for me. But in any case, if she's not into video games, have a bad movie date. Watch the worse movies you've ever seen, and spend time mocking them. That'll show off your sense of humor, which is always a good thing. Or treat her, and pick up some kind of really sappy romance, and watch with her.
but in all honesty, NS is probably the worst place to get dating advice. i think it's pretty telling that the first response you got was 'ask her to play halo 2"

Don't take her to the movies. You want a place where she won't be scared to talk to you. The "movies" can also be an innuendo. Take her someone where you can be alone. Where do you live?

The picnic does sound like a good idea...
Here are some other things I thought of, just off the top of my head:
Get out some markers and other art supplies and make cards or coupon books for each other. The coupons could have things like "one backrub"; "one kiss"; "one hug", or think of little things you could do for each other that don't cost anything, like running an errand or whatever.
How about a scavenger hunt? Make up a list of totally random things you might find on campus, or ask someone else to do a list for you. As you go down the list, designate spots to reward yourselves. Like, when you find item #9,you will share a soda; when you have found half the items on your list you will kiss each other - that sort of thing. You don't have to actually obtain the item - it can be things like finding a certain type of car, or a license plate with the letter "X" in it.

The other thing I was going to suggest was to get some books on interesting things to see in your city - landmarks or whatever and take a walking tour.
If you have an art gallery, see if they have days you can get in for free. You can discuss the art as you tour, or both jot down notes about the works and compare them later. Sometimes it's interesting when two people see the same piece of art, but don't talk about it until later. You can get to know a lot about a person by how they interpret art.
And the best suggestion is just to ask her what she would like to do...

It depends on the girl really, i've met girls whose ideal first dates would be something along the lines of a few hours on Halo 2 (and be almost as good as me if not better, not that i'm as good as most online players), soe heavy metal music, then going out into town late a night, get drunk on rum, mug some townies / chavs and finish off with some sex in public.
Of course, these girls are seldom my close friends, and i personally don't intend to date them. The girls i date are somewhere between the other extreme and the halfway point, tho closer to halfway.

Could someone explain to me when the hell this thread went from someone asking for dating ideas to having people insult his spelling? I miss the connection between these two. Anyways, another date idea that can always be fun would just to go to something stupid that you both like. For my ex and I, it was Ikea. Basically, we spent hours making fun of weird furniture. Sounds strange I know, but it's a lot of fun, and more original than most dates.

Also, you have to base all actions on what your strenghts and weakneses are, this is not for dating but in general, if your upper body is not execly something that has been shaped by sports avoid beeing without a t-shirt, if you can play an instrument to that and so on, if you have upper ody shaped by sports then find any excuse to take off shirt and so on... Hopefully my advice will get you and your girl doing this :fluffle:
doing this :fluffle: isn't a problem we do that a lot. i too am in the lack of funds because of education department. we are in a little college town sorrounded by many natural wonders but im not sure if she likes that kind of stuff.
I don't think you should go mountain climbing. It would be too cold. You wouldn't be adequate for :fluffle: anyway.

it depends... i could use the cold as an excuse to stay close to her so we can :fluffle:
But, hon, you still won't be "adequate".
I think you should go with the scavenger hunt. What could you say or give her as the treasures that she will like?

true enough. i am leaning more towards the picnic idea because i can think of a few places that are good spots for this.
and because of funds it is a little more posible
I think that would be great! Have you been art pad? You could send her movie of things you want to say to her. Then she'll definitely be psyched for the picnic.

i like using the element of surprise more than telling people of my plans. it fits my personality better.

Smash her over the head with a rock, and drag her into a closet and leave her there. You know, troll romance. [/discworld nonsense]
unless she wants to play Halo2
