When will milk become obsolete?

Andaluciae

It seems obvious to me that with increasing technology, our dependence upon milk for calcium and the like is dwindling. We no longer need milk for butter or baking, as soy products are capable of filling the space. I mean, really, do we need milk, and how long will this need remain?

I don't like soy milk or rice milk or any of the other substances that are supposed to be adequate substitues for the real thing. I don't drink a lot of milk, but it's a must for cereal and to eat with cookies. Mmmmm....

It will never become obsolete.

Why would you want milk to become obsolete? Most people aren't getting enough calcium as it is. Besides baking with milk substitutes just isn't the same as it is with real milk. Cows still need to be milked! :)

Actually cows milk doesn't really provide the human body with very much calcium. Calcium fortified juices, soy-milk/rice milk are healthier beverages for you. Studies are being conducted on the links between prostate cancer and cows milk consumption (because of IGF-I).

There are a lot more foods (basil, lettuce, collard greens, fortified cereal/ juices, and seaweed) that offer more calcium per calorie then milk.

I'm not saying you shouldn't drink milk, or trying to scare people into not drinking it. I'm just saying that the whole "Drink milk for healthy stromg bones" argument isn't all its cracked up to be.

For one thing, the calcium in milk isn't as easy for our bodies to absorb as calcium from say, broccoli. So really, you're better off eating your veggies for calcium.

I recently switched to soy milk (got tired of sharing milk with my roommates) and I think it's delicious! It's the perfect compliment to cereal and on its own it tastes kinda like tofu. I'm not sure if it quite fills in the role of a cookie dunking/follow up to some nice chocolate kind of beverage though, I've yet to try it.

Indeed, its been said that humans need cows milk as much as say....giraffes milk....

I enjoy soy milk as well, it took me awhile to get used to it, but now even the smell of cows milk makes me sick, blah.

I agree with you. Mountain water also has more calcium and so does vitamins that contain ingredients from coral reef. I've never liked milk either.

You're a medical student. I'm wondering if I need to see a doctor. I have acid reflux and it has gotten really bad even though I'm on medication. I feel like I have aerosol caught in my throat. I can't breathe. I'm also shaking which doesn't really have anything to do with it.

Well, cow's milk is for baby cows...

Like how people milk is for baby people.

I just bought my first carton of soy milk earlier this week so I haven't really got sick of cow's milk, I just enjoy the new stuff. I still eat cheese and will eat ice cream and the like. I'm just cutting back a little on the dairy is all.

Uh, that doesn't sound healthy. I'm not a med student, but I'd say you should see a doctor.

But then I'm canadian so I can go anytime and have gone to the doctor's for less.

What medication are you on? Depending on the severity of your AR, you might have whats known as GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Your doctor can give you medication to surpress the production of acid by the stomach (if thats not what your medication is for already). You also want to make sure they run tests for duodenal or gastric (stomach) ulcers, so that they don't diagnose it as GERD by mistake (since an ulcer would react the same way GERD would to certain treatments). Talk to your doctor and tell him/her that your still having AR problems, and that the medication is only surpressing the pepsin/acid production a bit, but not taking care of the problem as a whole. And you might be experiencing the tremors and shortness of breath because of the fact that your body is regurgitating a very strong mixture of fluids into your esophagus, this is not only uncomfortable for you, but its throwing your body for a loop, thus the tremors.

Just talk to your doctor though, they should be able to treat it. :)

The tremors could also be from your medication. AR/heartburn medications like Nexium can sometimes cause tremors.

While Milk isn't exactly the healthiest drink for ye(I drink Whle Milk m'self), I still find it tasty and refreshing. Now, I'm not the kind of guy who will just go to the fridge to get a glass of milk(I'm more of a water and tea guy), I still use milk alot. I use it in my tea, my cereal, my cheese, my cookies, my coffee, etc. Although I think that skim milk and fat free milk aren't as tasty, they still get the job done. However, Soy Milk tastes nasty! I swear, when I had a glass of soy milk I dropped it on the ground and thought someone was trying to poison me. I don't care how healthy it is for ye, if it tastes like shit im not gonna eat it!

Milk already has become somewhat obselete in my diet. Not because I don't like it, or don't appreciate its value, but because I am a college student. If I buy a quart of milk, its $3.00. I only use milk to drink when I eat dinner or in my cereal. However, I eat dinner at the dining hall (and I normally just get water there instead because they don't have skim milk), and a quart of milk is too much to use in my coffee in a week or two (I don't drink coffee every morning). I haven't had milk in ages. Instead, I take a calcium supplement every morning and take a multivitamin.

That Parmalat stuff, milk in a box? It's hard to find in the US, but it's damn good. When I go on vacation I put it in my bag because it doesn't need to be refrigerated(sp?)until you open it, and in the morning, I can have cereal without spending 4 hours trying to find a store on my first day.

Actually, it's pretty commonly available in NYC. I always keep a box in my pantry (just check the date -- it's LONG, but not INDEFINITE) in case of snowstorms or hurricanes or milk strikes. For some reason, it tastes creamier than milk -- even though I only ever buy 1% milk fat Parmalat.

Here in CT, it's hard to get. In the 5-6 towns nearest me, about two stores (health food ones) sell it.
Skim is what it's all about, though.

I live in Georgia and you can find it there easily by the hot cocoa and canned and evaporated milk. And, Parmalat USA is based in Atlanta (I think) so I can get it pretty easily.

Milk is a necissary ingredient in many foods, plus it contains many vitamins and minerals that help to body function, plus milk substitutes are just wrong and normal milk is so :) :) :).

Now as for human milk, I think that eventually women will get hormone treatments to make their breasts grow big naturally instead of getting implants, which would have the added affect of creating more human milk.

Milk is for baby mammals. It becomes obsolete when one grows up.

Cereal goes real good with water, but if you need creamy, try it with slices of avocado.

Cheese is a mold and as such, contains harmful mycotoxins. Mushrooms too. And grains are often contaminated with the mold toxins as well, particularly wheat and corn.

Most everyone would do better to eat the diet upon which we evolved - fruits, nuts, vegetables and legumes... and meat if you're into that, but not at every meal, or you're asking for an early death!

And there's never reason to abuse animals - steer clear of factory farms, or you're just asking for blowback like mad cow, hormones, antibiotics, genetically modified non-foods. Similar to the USA just asking for 9/11 after decades of supporting corrupt dictatorships and Islamist fanatics in oil exporting countries, which of course continues to this day. :headbang:

You cause pain to other people, or other animals, you don't think you can feel pain too???

I think this is an interesting topic because I have heard that the requirements for students to drink milk in schools are just because the dairy farmers have an extremely strong lobby. If you look at a breakdown according to race you find that the rates of lactose intolerence vary, with some studies saying that as many as 70% of hispanic-americans and 90% of african-americans are lactose intolerant. Yet milk is still the only acceptable drink for school-age children, seems like de facto racism.

Yeah, I dunno about the water. Of course, I only find milk useful with cereal. I simply cannot drink it under normal circumstances, and even then, I use as little milk as possible. I just don't like the stuff, so it's no loss to me if it became obsolete for others as well.
