"World War Two was associated with an increase in radiation-induced cancer from atomic bombs"

Does this just refer to those who were actually on the receiving end of the bombs? If so I'd find it a stretch to say that post WW2 cancer cases were significant enough to be somehow considered emblematic or 'signature wounds' for the war as a whole.
