Name one successful economy that developed through free-trade. Just one. I dare you.

(Hint: it's sort of a trick question.)

Well, during the Opium Wars, Britain wanted to trade with China, but most Chinese didn't want what they were selling, so Britain invaded China. So Britain didn't actually engage in free trade (obviously), rather mostly through protectionist policies and the like.

So that's kinda the trick.

It didn't develop to where it is through that system.

None, and all of them. So both.

All macro-economic questions could be considered trick questions, because there is no answer LARGE enough to cover all factors involved...

European Union

By all meanings of the word successful the EU has had nothing but benifits from the Free Trade zone which was created across their boarders... that coupled with the Euro ofcourse

Ummm. I don't know much about the Opium Wars, but based purely on what you say....

Were the British forcing individual consumers to buy their opium? If not, it sounds as though they were forcing free trade in opium on China (assuming no subsidies &c). Thoroughly reprehensible, but free trade. Or did you mean to make the point that the British forced an exclusive contract on the Chinese and prevented other suppliers coming to market?

My general answer would be much the same as NM's, though. The British Empire was a special case, and the Opium Wars particularly so.

Well, the point that I was trying to make was that all the free-trade economies have gone hand-in-hand with either war or failure. But that kinda got superseded by NM's point... which is why I lose. Ah well.

i would say that the free trade zone (relatively compared to the rest of world trade at least) inside of the EU has been pretty successful.
