Firefox baby!
No spyware for me and tabbed browsing is the shit.

You should probably list Netscape for all the Maccers out there.

Firefox, by far. Tabbed browsing, popup blocker, all those rad extensions, and no Buy Opera Now!!! ads.

If you use IE, I'm sorry.

I use Safari and Firefox. Actually, I use Firefox 80% of the time, and Safari 19% of the time. I use IE 1%, and only when I'm coding something just to make sure it doesn't totally look like ass in IE. God I hate IE.

firefox, easily. only problem is that soon it will be the top thing, and everyone and their mothers will use it, then it will have tons of pop-ups and exploits. that would suck.

I use firefox and love it, I only have one problem with it

when one tab/site freezes up, all others do so too!

while in IE, I can still surf in the other pages :(

Anyone know how to fix that :) ?

Safari is Apple's web browser, as such it only works on OSX, but it is very nice (I'm using it right now).

Prolly won't help, but have you upgraded to 1.0.1? And yeah, it probably has a few bugs, but only because they just came out with a new version, and DEFINITELY not as bad as the security concerns of IE. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer#Security)

Cleaned out? Do they hose them down? I'm curious as to what exactly that means.

(And, by the way, I'm sure that any bureaucracy-loving public school system wouldn't switch internet browsers unless they went through miles of paperwork. I'm not dissing your school for IE, just stating the general... suckiness... of it.)

I use all three, partly for formatting issues and partly for testing. For example, some special characters won't show correctly in my version of Firefox, so I use Opera for that.

I hugely prefer Firefox over IE. I like my browser to be a program that doesn't make me a slave for the webdesigner of any page I go to. No rightclick madness, pop-up windows, self-installing software or changing mouse cursors for me, no sir. :D

Opera is underrated though. I used it for at least the past five years before switching to Firefox, and its tabbed browsing is still a little better in my opinion.

I've been having reliability issues with firefox. I love the tabbed browsing and all that but frequently when playing videos and such it freezes completely whereas I don't get this problem with IE. Also frequently it tells me that it needs to install plugins to play something and yet when I try to it iturns out the plugins aren't available. No problem with IE. Finally I recently installed a patch for it and it gave up the ghost completely and now I'm going to have to reinstall. It could be due to the extensions I'm running but if there was a real google toolbar for firefox I wouldn't have to bother downloading an unofficial one thatr still isn't as good as the real thing.
Dragon Cows
05-03-2005, 11:20
hmmm.... i've had trouble with installing plugins as well, but it hasn't really become a major issue for me.

As for the google bar, there is one built in to firefox that'll run a whole bunch of different search engines (including google) (if you're not seeing it, you may have to change your view options)

Google Search is built right into the toolbar.

Have you got 1.0.1 (as asked earlier)? A lot of problems are fixed if you go to the site and download the latest stuff.

I use Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com). It's tabbed like firefox, has a search bar, and advanced popup/ad filtering. It's cool because it still supports ActiveX. Only issue I have with it is that it's built off the IE framework, thus having limited PNG support. Don't get me wrong, Maxthon blocks pretty much all of the adware and spyware that IE alone is prone to.

I use Opera! It's way better than IE and I even prefer it to Firefox, I think.

I think the alternatives are better than IE because Microsoft are so smug in their monopoly that they don't even make an effort to be that good.

I'm torn between Firefox and Opera. On the one hand, Opera is outstanding at controlling tabs etc. Nice interface, fully customisable control bars...but then there's Firefox with it's uber extensions etc.

I think, however, that if I were to chose one of t'other I would go for Opera. Mainly because it integrates IRC, Email, Newsgroups, tabbed-browsing ( + much more ) into one. I know, I know, Firefox can do this too, but you have to find the extensions for some of those features which can sometimes be a hassle :-(

The ad-supported version is free. You have to pay if you want to get rid of the adverts.
I use FireFox and have never had any problems with it besides the odd shitty webdesigner who wouldn't know W3C compliancy if it smaked them in the face. Going back to IE from FireFox is like cutting off a limb.

Bizarre, but it looks like the FireFox programmers didn't "multi-thread" the individual sessions/tabs so if one locks up, the whole Firefox does. IE runs many copies of itself.

Tbh, I hope less people use firefox, so that it remains spyware free.

Too lazy to log off of my UN nation. At any rate. . .

I've been using Firefox since it was Firebird. I don't understand why anybody uses Internet Explorer, and Netscape has been corrupted by AOL.

I should probably use Mozilla though. Now that Firefox is popular it may ruin perceptions of my nerdiness.

Firefox. It's open source, so you know exactly what you're getting..

It's far more secure than IE.

It's a small program, so it fits very well on older computers with limited hard drive space.

And the extensions like ChatZilla, built in Google search, and pop up blockers are just sweet.

I have to say that ActiveX is one of the main security risks of IE so thats not a good thing. And what is with the Grey background when it should be clear in IE, very irratating.

Yes but the same problem persists in IE. If one copy freezes, the rest do too.
on my computer if IE freezes the whole computer crashes  , it manages that even when I am just checking my hotmail addy (for some reason hotmail still opens in IE from msn messanger even though firefox is my preffered browser)

I use firefox and cannot now live without tabbed browsing. I have to say I got my first ever virus through firefox a few weeks ago which doesn't bode well for the future. I also find firefox takes ages to start for me and it completly stops working while loading Java. And last time I tried an extension refused to install but it doesn't bother me much.
Another slightly strage bug is with my site's flash menu, if you scrool down the page and try to click a link it will take you to a totally different page, so I am now going back to simple html menus on my site (if anyone knows how to fix this it would be appreciated).

I would also be intrested if anyone knows of any good text only browsers.

And I would like to know how anyone can use the aol browser for more than 3 mins without killing themselves, my friend uses AoL as their internet connection and it has got to be the most irratating thing ever.

lol. he drives with seatbelts. if he didn't i'd kick him. safety first yo. he drives like an old lady really.
