What about the future?

Some people believe that before the next turn of the century, the world will be far, far, better. Perhaps. But I still fear what the future will bring. Just think of what we have to look forward to:

1. People use internet slang and look intelligent.
Imagine this! Someday you'll go into a classroom and hear something along these lines: "And then George Dewey pwned teh Spanish at Manila Bay. And Spain is all, 'Lamers! Joo cheated!' And America is all, 'STFU, we pwned joo!"

Keep in mind, though, this will be coming from the teacher.

2. Giant Mechs become reality.
This in itself is not too bad. But you know how these giant robots are going to be decorated, right? Suddenly, CNN coverage of military operations is like watching anime...and what do you think the embedded reporter will be wearing?

3. Keanu Reeves wins a Lifetime Achievment Award.
I used to think that this was impossible. But after Son of the Mask got made, I knew that Hollywood is insane, and capable of doing anything. Just imagine his acceptance speech!

4. Reality shows become more extreme.
Corporate mergers are all but inevitable. Thus, one day Survivor, Amazing Race, Fear Factor, and American Idol will all be combined into one show. Recoil in horror as people are dropped in the middle of nowhere will nothing, forced to do dangerous and disgusting things to obtain money from the natives. While singing. All while a man berates them constantly for sucking so much.

What else does the future hold?

First off, there' a difference between internet language and standard conversation language. Second of all, I'm not too worried about who gets a lifetime achievement award. I'm more worried about the repitition of a Civil war or Holocaust here in the States, the effects of US imperialism, and WWIII.

Those things are bothering the hell out of me, too. And what the *fuck* is up with our President and his "righteous crusade for Democracy"? Poking around in the business of other nations which we have no quarrel with is both disgusting and dispicable.

I'm so happy you think so, too. Many people seem to think that a civil war or Holocaust is behind us. That's just not true. Currently, there are huge forces of hatred being created. Classes are clashing, and there's a huge movement in political parties. My generation tends more Liberal than anything else, and they're still living among the Conservatives. Sometimes I wish I could move out of the US, I no longer feel safe here.

I am happy that someone is trying to promote democracy, and get rid of Tyranny. I applaud GWB for what he has done so far.

As for the future, I see Peace in the middle east.. where Jew's and Muslim's actually live together..

I see the technology to get rid of all the diseases that plague us today.

I see little to no birth rates, for we will have the technology of Immortality...

But i still see Religious Vs. Atheists, Gay Rights and Abortion's will still be hot topics.

Evolution will play a nasty trick on the human race. The stupid will outbreed the smart and end up swamping population with people who's intelligence level is equal to Jerry Springer show guests. Following that, technology will stagnate as the stupid masses stop funding research and persecute those smarter than they. The world will descend into superstition and religious violence. Some idiot will launch a nuclear attack, and humanity will be reduced to primitive tribes living in a nuclear ice age.

I hear that Hong Kong is a great place. I'd like to go there after I finish College.

That is, unless this country can clean up its foul demeanor.

How do you see birth rates going down with death rates going down? The US does not have the ability to keep its population down without the use of government controls. I don't see government controls as a good thing. Then, everyone will be on birth control and people will be having abortions left and right.

The future will feature the enslavement of the human species to apes.

The future will also feature a style that consists of one hairy armpit and one shaved armpit. With a cat as a hat.

I admire Hong Kong as one of the most ecnomically free and socially free nations in the world - not sure if I'd like to live there, though....

Eh, ya gotta make due w/what ya got. . . . I would like to see the federal government stop speding so much though...

I see a utopia. A planet where everyone lives in peace.

Then whoever is in charge of America at the time blowing the shit out of it for being in their galaxy.

I created this thread with tongue planted firmly in cheek, but it is interesting to wonder about the future. What I think, though, is that it is ultimately pointless to try to predict what the world will be like 95 years from now. Why? The same reason that Babbage could have never predicted the computers we use today. Technology rushes forward too quickly, and it really does build upon itself. It also proves difficult to predict--who could have imagined a modern computer without first knowing of a television? Who could have imagined a television without first knowing about a cinema? Who could have imagined a cinema without first knowing about a camera? Who could have imagined...
