I know I ( and others) may be getting annoying by asking all these opinionative questions about what you think about America and Americans, but im going to try anyway.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

This is for school and my personal use, any responses would be very helpful.

It would be great for my research if you also included:

Gender
Country
Age
Religion
Job

Im sorry if i offended anyone by being nosy or out of line in this post.
Thanks a bunch in advance!

1 The US government is currently controlled by people who I seriously disagree with on many issues. I'm hoping the nation will vote them out in the comming elections.

2 The average American is about as smart as the average human anywhere else. That's about as dumb as a bag of hammers.

3 The first thing? Gee there are so many things. I guess I'd start with the easiest. Pick better candidates to be judges on the federal courts.

4 England, Israel, Italy, maybe Poland and definately Japan

5 N. Korea, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Venezuela, Hell, the list goes on for a while

3) I'd make myself dictator for life....no, seriously I'd bring your church under contol, improve your schools, improve international relations and nationalise healthcare. And ban American Football (Rugby wannabees....)

4) Politially Britan and Isral, and the dictaor states the US sponsors. But as an actual nation, I'd say Isral. But in links (Micky D's ect.) Britian.

1: An almost Fascist government. You say anything negative about it, and you better watch yourself.

2: It depends. People in the Northeast tend to be the most educated, while people in the Midwest usually aren't far behind. People in the "Deep South" are by far the least educated (stupid hicks), while people on the West Coast are a mixed bag of all three.

3: I'd throw out religion from government COMPLETELY, I'd nationalize healthcare, I'd cut military funding in key areas, I'd get schools under control, and I'd take out bans for drugs and gay marriage.

4: Britain, Japan, Isreal, Italy, and South Korea.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?
:upyours:, Dubya.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?
Depends. Some of the world's smartest geniuses are Americans, and some of the world's most incurably idiotic ignoramuses are from here, too.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?
Sponsor coups to bring Ian Smith to power in Zimbabwe, Chief Butheluzi in South Africa, Alfredo Stroessner in Paraguay, Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero in Nicaragua, Reza Pahlavi II in Iran, Nguyen Cao Ky in Vietnam, Vang Pao in Laos, Augusto Pinochet in Chile, and John Chang (son of Chiang Ching-kuo) in Taiwan. I would then break off diplomatic relations and trade with Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, all the 'former' Soviet republics, and all other communist and pro-communist countries. I would eliminate the 17th Amendment, the income tax, the IRS, the Federal Reserve, etc. I would pull us out of every international organization and entangling alliance. All social welfare programs, education, healthcare, etc., would be turned over to the states. I would drastically increase defense spending. I would eliminate all corporate welfare, minimum wage, as well as tariffs. I would surround our borders with electrified fences and landmines and antiaircraft artillery. All illegals would be peacefully deported, but legals would be allowed to stay. All subversives, leftists, and NWO supporters would be weeded out of the government. All drug laws, marriage laws, law enforcement, etc. would be turned over to state and local governments. The House Un-American Activities Committee, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, etc. would all be revived. All 'departments' except State, Treasury, Justice, and Defense (which would be broken up into the Departments of War, Navy, and Air Force) would be eliminated. Except for the military, all spending would be slashed dramatically. Roe v Wade would be repealed, and abortion laws would be turned over to the states. I would immediately pull all our troops out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, S. Korea, Japan, etc. and prepare for an invasion of North Korea.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?
South Korea
Japan
Thailand
Grenada
Philippines

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

1. The current administration has not been a positive force in the world. The US government, as in how it is set up, is primitive, undemocratic and vests too much power in one person.

2. Probably not more or less intelligent than people of other nationalities. They do seem ignorant of the world and what their country is doing and has done to it, though.

3. Bring in legislation to augment the power of the parliament/congress, eventually leading to the abolishment of the bicameral system, replacing it with a unicameral one, which would have parlamentarian control over the government through a prime minister, whose duties would be domestic, with a lesser prominent president elected to oversee representation abroad and who would oversee the changes of governments (with no power to revoke the mandate of the prime minister, whose mandate would come from parliament, but with a judicial veto, subject to overrule by >66% of parliament/congress, and ability to call for a vote of no confidence). I would also start work on updating the constitution, which is dated and in dire need of overhaul (mostly clarifications that would end the apparent arguing of what things written in it actually mean, such as the separation of church and state and the second amendment).

4. The Western developed countries and Japan.

5. North Korea, Iran, China and Cuba.

1. An ideal, rational, sometimes conservative government. Some of you people have messed up views of the U.S. "Say anything bad about them, watch out". MY ASS. I'll go out and say anything I want about the government, and they won't do anything. First Amendment, bub. Sure, the government can be a little out of wack, and do things unorthodox at times, but I believe we have one of the greatest governments in the world.

2. Just as smart as people from other countries.

3. Bring *some* of the troops home, as we could be needing them in the near future. I'd attempt to tweak social security a bit, but not the way Bush wants to do it. I'd fire Condi and BEG Powell to come back. I'd tweak with welfare a bit, and make it so that one could not rely entirely on the Government for support. I'd also revamp if not completely remove the patriot act, as we have no use for it right now.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?I am probably the least represented American right now, considering that all of my votes were for the opponents of everyone who won. I guess that means that I rather don't like how the country is currently being run. I do not like that we invaded a country without legal precedence nor approval from the UN security council. I do not like that Pres. G. W. Bush has made a mockery of our country's ideals and founding principles. So basically, I don't like the current administration.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?I don't believe that we are any smarter or dumber than anyone from any other country. I do believe that our education system needs a serious revamp, and that the way things are taught to us is extremely Americentric (or at least Eurocentric). There's a whole lot more world out there than America and Europe.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?First things first, I would admit that this country has wronged several other countries, and would apologize for the actions of the previous presidents. I would see to it that policies were made that prohibit this from happening again, then attempt to carefully fix what had been done wrong. I would make sure any actions I took were -not- drastic measures. Even if it is wrong to have troops in another country, now that they are there, it's also wrong to suddenly remove them creating a power vaccuum. As to internal issues, I would push for an end to religion and government mixing together. This country was founded on secular ideologies, not religious. The moment that it began to follow any one religion strongly was the moment it began to fall apart at the seams. I would also attempt to revamp the education and healthcare systems to something a bit closer to the rest of the world, and not so Euro/Americentric. I would happily remind everyone that our country is only as great as the rest of the world perceives it to be. If they all think poorly of us, we are -not- the greatest country in the world. Lastly, I would undo many of the recent laws that have effectively turned the US into more of a fascism than a democracy.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?Likely to be England and Israel. For some strange reason, no matter how much we step on England, they continue to support us. If I were England, I would have sided with the rest of Europe not us lately. Israel also appears to be strongly linked, since the US seems to have so much interest in continuing it's support of the theocracy of Israel. I am not sure whether this is out of some sense of guilt that the US did not enter WWII in a timely fashion, and thus resulted in the deaths of more Jews at the hands of the Nazis, or if there is some other reason behind this support.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States? There are some obvious choices of Iran, North Korea, and Syria. However, I do believe that the US's star is descending rapidly to the horizon. That there are many more countries right now, that are severing ties with the US, trying to make a statement that they condemn what has happened. I believe that the reaction of the Australian parliament was particularly noteworthy in this regard. It is not common to see people booing and heckling a US President, especially when standing in a parliament building.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

I hate the US government and their extreme right wing fascist imperialistic policies which are only aimed at increasing the profits of their corporations to the detriment of humanity.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

I don't think many Americans seem to be as well educated about the world as the average person in Europe and they tend to believe the USA is the only country that is important and that the world should be run in their interests.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

There are hundreds of things I would like to change and this includes an end to imperialistic foreign policies, greater respect for human rights, making sure the rich pay their fair share of taxes, putting the needs of the people above private profit and establishing free healthcare and high quality education for everyone.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

Other far right governments seem very close to the USA like those in Australia, Israel and Colombia as are some European leaders like Blair and Berlusconi although I wouldn't say the same about the majority of the people of Europe.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

I believe the policies of the Cuban and Venezualan governments probably differ the most with those of the US government. I also believe there is a massive difference between the political situation in the USA and Europe and even though some corrupt governments may appear fairly close the people of Europe couldn't be further from the USA on most issues.

1) Economics/Finance: Basis in free enterprise but moving toward socialism in some respects

3) If I were president of the US, I would scrap social security. It's just another tax. We needed it 70 years ago when we thought we were helpless with personal finance, but it should be paid off and done away with as soon as possible.

A close second is that I would initiate a law which would prohibit withholding. This way, people would understand how much they're paying in taxes and would notice the effects of tax relief. (on your paycheck taxes are withheld... and all you notice is the amount you're getting paid. Now imagine if you got your gross pay every week and at the end of the year received a bill for the amount of tax dollars you owe the government. THEN you'd realize how much your tax amount is and you could save these from year to year to see which presidents/congresses taxed you more or less.)

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?
Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, Israel

First of all good luck with your school report (or similar)

I'm male, British, 16, Atheist, school student

1) My opinion of the current administration horrendous, a travesty of a democratic system, full of right wing nuts and bullies. Bush strikes me as an ape, in fact most of the political comics in this country depict him as a monkey in a suit. They have utilised the 9/11 tragedy to install themselves as a Big Brother government, using fear of a shadowy enemy to restrict citizen rights and the idea that democracy can be spread through force to attack other countries, noticably muslim countries rather then the more obvious threats (N. Korea). As a whole I think it is good that you are not burdened with a group of parasitic royals but your poltical scene seems to me to be a one party system, with the democrats and republicans being more or less the same. I would advise every american to try and watch a British documentry called 'The power of nightmares', although much of the right may dismiss it as properganda (I haven't got the resources to argue its case myself) I do believe that it is essential viewing, espically after your electional results.
2) As smart as any other country, though I do believe that your media tends to lead you to be slightly more paranoid then the rest of the world and your education system needs a major overhaul, especially geography.
3) Seperate the state from religion once and for all, especially in schools, I have no problem with people worshipping as they see fit, but forcing it on impresionable kids I believe is wrong. Dramatically change foreign policy, as a superpower your actions effect the world and at present it not in a good way. Stop outsourcing prisioner torture to places like Syria (I am aware my government is doing the same, and I am attempting to do something about that) and stop the present actions in Guantanimo (sorry for any spelling mistakes).
4) The British Government (but not its people), Saudi Arabia and Isreal.

Flamewar??? where did that come from? Where are the flames?

EDIT: OH!!! I get it, you are one of those people who believe that any speech/thought that disagrees with your thoughts/beliefs is "hate" speech.

Sorry, I didnt know I was dealing with one of those people who thinks that freedom of thought only applies to those who think like them.

How am I preventing people from answering how they choose?

Are you saying that I have less right to condemn people based on their beliefs than they have to condemn me based on my beliefs?

It certainly seems like that is what you are implying, btw.. check my edit of the previous post.

Isanyonethere,

Granted that it stings when foreigners insult your (our) country, probably without any real merit as they don't know how good it is to live here, but the polls don't really require a direct response... it's just a Q & A. Someone asked a question, and people are posting their answers. Hijacking the thread with a defense of the U.S. will just make it harder for the original poster to get the information they wanted. 1. I'm a Conservative, and I find the American form of government to historically be the most stable and effective; thus I like it. I do not agree with everything the Bush Administration does, but in general I think the Republicans have a better idea on how to run the country at the moment.

2. As intelligent as other developed Western societies, roughly on par with Canada and Britain in regards to the "average middle class" intellectual ability.

3. Cut off trade with China, they are a looming threat on the horizon. Oh and sign into some agreements with Europe, perhaps even Kyoto if for no other reason then to ensure their favorable opinion and cooperation in our other endeavors.

4. The UK, Israel, Japan, Western Europe in general on a number of issues, Poland and much of Eastern Europe as well.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?
Too big and full of corrupting, wasteful beurocracies.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?
No more or less smart than the rest of the world. Because we have the loudest media voice people of the world get to see our stupidity more and so smuggly believe they are superior to us.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?
I would withdrawl all US troops from S. Korea and Europe with the exception of Poland. These places neither want nor deserve our help.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?
Japan, Australia (although this will change quickly) and Poland.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

Trigger Happy

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

Most humans I deem to be smart in a reactive type of way as opposed to being proactive. Americans I would lump in with them. That said, those who talk about Missile Defense and War in Iraq without knowing what they are talking about do bother me a bit.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

Focus on developing alternative sources of energy. It was the reason for the war in Iraq and for the US still being there. The US uses 20 million barrels of oil per day, it imports 12 million of those PER DAY. If you wonder why your trade deficit is so messed I would suggest looking at that. Develop alternative fuels like Hydrogen and alternative sources of transportation (such as Maglev rail lines between cities and satellite cities) ASAP!

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

Depends who is in power in the US. Countries are led by individuals. JFK did not want to go to war in Vietnam, Johnson did. Bush went to war in Iraq while I doubt Gore would have. Currently right now I would say the Brits though that is only because of Blair. The people disagree with his stance on the war in Iraq, it will be interesting to see if he wins the upcoming election.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

That is too broad a question. Do you mean weakest in terms of trade, overall relations? What period of time are you looking at? Are you talking about just in relation to George W Bush or before because the US has gone in an entirely different direction since he came to power (partly due to 9/11 as well - anyone stating this is the only reason, remember that had 9/11 not happened then 2001 would have been remembered for the US spy plane clipping wings with the Chinese F8 fighter and crash landing on a Chinese island in April).

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

Inefficient, well-meaning in places, over-confident, and a bit of a mess. From what I can see of the US gov't it's not entirely sure of what it's doing, and will as a result go with what it knows - in foreign policy, belligerence, in domestic policy, rampant capitalism. How long such a pairing can hold up (the rich screwing the poor both at home and abroad) remains to be seen.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

Sounds cliched, but not particularly. I get the impression that the majority of Americans are well-meaning enough, but too full of pride and too clumsy to achieve what they could and should do. They're not much different in many ways from the majpority of Britons, who are in essence mind-bendingly thick. However, with Americans it's compunded by a perverse national (though not on many occasions individual) arrogance. The idiocy of some Americans (the Far Right wing NWO conspiracy theorists, fundamentalist Christians, white supremacists and ultra-Liberals, among others) should of c0ourse NTO be allowed to detract from American brilliance elsewhere.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

Foreign Policy. American Foreign policy is without doubt a disaster. I have yet to see American foreign policy result in anything but antipathy towards their nation and constant ridicule elsewhere. Bluntly, American foreign policy is little more than a gung-ho, Boys' Own-style attempt to impose American methods on other nations. While that's all well and good in some cases (Iraq, for instance, needed Saddam disposed of) America then consistently foils its own plans, because Americans seem always to elect the most clumsy, overt, noisy method they can find for achieving their aims. The US military is a prime example. Cliched as it is, American soldiers seem to have huge problems hitting anything.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

Right at the moment, the UK is probably enjoying its best relations with the USA for years. However, this remains deeply unpopular among the British population. Certainly my peers and I are to say the least scornful of our involvement with the USA.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

Most of them. America does NOT do itself any favours regarding making allies by its constant belligerence and arrogance. However, I'd probably rate Iran as lowest at this moment.

1) Well, I think it has its problems, but overall its structure is designed well.

2) I think it depends what region they are from; for example, I'm not too excited about the Midwests intelligence, but I'm from the East Coast and there are many intelligent people that I know. I think that the more metropolitan areas have people that are better acquainted with the issues of the world, and therefore are more intelligent (in my opinion).

3) Honestly, I can't say exactly. I would have to be in that position with all of his knowledge to really know what I'd do. However, I think the thing that angers me the most about our President is his new plan for social security, while Medicare and Medicaid are estimated to be 8 times worse off than SS.

4) I guess from my perspective, Great Britain and Israel seem to have the closest alliance.

5) Political link, as in an alliance with us? I would say that North Korea and Russia have weak links right now.

1) The government can be invasive at times. It is being run by someone I do not like. Probably hiding alien technologies (I can't decide if I am joking or serious on that one).

2) Well, not to sound cocky or anything, but I am pretty smart (probably at least a 8 or 9/10), but I look around my classroom, and at least in my school.. there is a lot of apathy now... and I live in a conservative state, and some conservatives can be iffy. Average, 5/10

3) If I was the President I would get rid of that damn No Child LEft Behind. It puts teachers under a lot of pressure, and now instead of trying to let kids really absorb material and have long, awesome discussions-- they are fretting on cramming everything into your brain so you can do well on state tests so that they don't get money taken away from the school district. That and the fact that people don't learn at the same pace, and some people may not learn at all or do not put in any effort (See above: Apathy).

Funny how everyone whines about America but I don't hear a peep about Russia or China. Man, paradise must have landed in every country but the U.S. for everyone to have something to say and nothing to do. But I'll bite.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment? The government itself is too large and complicated, and the democratic process is being stymied by corporate interests and corrupt politicians. Needs to be revamped. Of course, the only people who can do the revamping are the ones currently in power, so we're down one paddle.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?Above average, for humanity as a whole. Keep in mind that there are many areas of the world in which education isn't even available. In the Western, industrialized world, I'd say they're average, perhaps a bit below average, according to recent studies.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why? From Bush, you mean? Asking "what would you do differently?" instead of "what would you do?" is a big difference. I would cut back federal spending. But there's so much else I'd want to do too... I don't think I'd be President long enough to get it all done. I sympathize with the Roosevelts...

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?Great Britain [the government, not the people], Japan, Afghanistan, Iraq [come on, think about it].

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?Iran, North Korea. Pretty standard response.

I think that the more metropolitan areas have people that are better acquainted with the issues of the world, and therefore are more intelligent (in my opinion)."

Maybe the apathy I see and your comment about the Midwest population being a bit less intelligent have something in common. I want to go to the east coast.. I had a really intelligent friend that lives there-- go figure. (Being so sheltered from the rest of the world in the middle of America sucks)

1) Considering that they are working under a system that is inherently flawed(not because of who is in it) they are doing better then most of the world

2) I think that most people don't give us enough credit. We are smarter then we look. Overall in my area, I find that especially in my school, i see a lot of people with me who are really smart people, who could easily compete on a national level. The big problem is when you get to the extremes. Especially the far out spoken liberals(not that I hate liberals, just the ones who believe that the government should just hand us everything we need, instead of letting us work for ourselves). Average 7/10

3) Let's see, knowing that the power of the president is not all it's cracked up to be, I can't kill off democrats, i can't make any random law i choose, I can't just arbitraraly do just about anything. Probbly increase Federal spending on the military, and cut it from stupid things like Welfare.

1) The government is good, but we picked a real idiot to run it this time around. He's basically made the world look at us as a country of warmongers, and he's pissed off a lot of people invading Afghanistan, Iraq, and now (I think) Iran looking for "terrorists" and making the world "safe for democracy." Way to go, moron. We're not even a democracy, we're a republic. Anyone wo can't correctly speak his own language should NOT be the representative for an entire country. My thoughts on Bush are basically:  :sniper:

2) On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give the average American somewhere around 3.7, 10 being the highest. I've seen some smart people, but a lot of the people I meet are... well... not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Hell, a lot of people who live here don't speak any English, or they speak broken English. If you want to move here, you should at least make an effort to be able to communicate with the people who were here first.

3) First: Get out of the war as soon as I can. Bring our troops back. I'm not anti-war, but this one is just plain stupid.
Second: Drop the BS policy that we should be the only country allowed nukes and propose that ALL countries disarm, including us. Nuclear weapons are far too dangerous to be allowed to exist. As Einstein put it, if there is a WW3, we'll be fighting WW4 with sticks and stones, because that's all that will be left. Our country alone has enough firepower to obliterate the entire surface of the Earth EIGHT TIMES. We do NOT need that. If it were up to me there would be no more bombs that use nuclear power.
Third: Do my very best to improve foreign relations across the globe. Then we don't have to worry about terrorist attacks, because everyone will like us.

4) Pfft. I don't think anyone is particularly fond of America right now.

5) Obviously all the countries we invaded. Other than that, I think the whole world is a bit pissed at us right now.

1) Negative
2) Slightly below average for the first world
3) Right at the moment, the big damage has already been done. I suppose a major focus would be regaining some of the industrialized world's respect. I'd also put an end to this talk about privatizing social security, and push for Gay marriage or civil unions. Probably do what I could to get rid of the death penalty.

I can take the hating of America, and I can take the hating of Americans, but I can't take the hating of American Football!!! Ahhhhh! This is a truly American game, and anyone who doesn't know it, should stow it (up their arse). Football (not soccer) is the greatest game on the face of the earth. At the highest levels it is extremely complex and primal at the same time. Just because you don't understand it, don't knock it. Rugby wannabe's? Holy crap, rugby is weak. Some tough guys play rugby, but beyond that, Football id FAR, FAR, FAR better. Don't bring the popularity of soccer into this either. Any idiot can kick a ball and that's why the game is so outrageously popular. And, don't start about toughness either. Put the top 100 football players in the world on the same field as the top 100 rugby players, and the rugby players don't walk off the field... they're carried. You don't REALLY know American football... Oh, this is ridiculous. I can't explain how stupid the rugby vs. football vs. soccer arguments are. The point is, football is the greatest game on all the planet, throughout all human history.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

After 9/11 (or, as we call it here 11/9) most of the world offered condolences to the US, holding out hands of friendship. Many people on my very estate dangled United States' flags out of their windows as a show of respect.
In response, America decided to head off to the Middle East. Afghanistan was one thing. Iraq was a whole other thing. But that isn't what bothered me. When nations disagreed with the decision to invade Iraq, the US government immediately slapped that hand of friendship away and started hurling insults at them. The American people we saw on the news didn't exactly act with a lot of decency either, although I realise that those are the 'loud morons' I mention below.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

I am of the firm belief that at least 75% of the entire world's population are either ignorant, or idiotic. Could be upwards of 90%. The United States is included in that assessment, but not singled out. All countries have their morons. America's morons are just louder, and more nationalistic -- to a fault, almost always. The number of Americans I have encountered across the internet with a significantly superiority complex, who have no problems telling us scummy foreigners just how inferior we are, I'm sorry to say, outnumber the normal, decent Americans I have met so far. Again, 'loud morons', but not wholly excellent ambassadors.
That isn't to say you have any more or less idiots living there than anywhere else. I know a fair few morons right here. The only difference is that as they weren't forced to recite any 'Britain is great!' passages every day at school they don't really have that same superiority complex. They just have the standard-issue compliment of curse words and largely destructive/offensive/morally suspect hobbies that come free with all morons.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

First off, leave Iran alone. If they want to develop nuclear power, that's fine by me. Good for the atmosphere, good for the oil supplies, good for their economy.
Fix Iraq. That's a top international priority. I don't know how exactly; obviously if I was the President of the United States I would have a little more expertise in that regard, or so I would hope. Certainly don't go looking for more countries to aim guns at until that one is fixed. I would also turn some more attention back on Afghanistan, which appears to be largely neglected.
Whilst doing all that, I would see if there was something that could be done to improve the economy and perhaps bring in a few more jobs.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

Canada is their biggest trading partner, I am told. The UK would be next up in line I would think, if not first in line given the current affairs.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

At the moment, I would say that most of the Middle East has, and probably always will now, have some hostility towards the US. Russia probably doesn't think too highly of America either, given current goings-on and their long history. The French, and possibly a few other mainland Europe counties probably couldn't be considered 'bezzie mates' either.

Do NOT get me started on this; you will most certainly regret it. Suffice it to say that what you have just said is my chief problem with Americans. American arrogance drives me up the bloody wall.

Real Americans aren't arrogant. Sure, the Americans that you see on your "tellie" are, because you see the government and the actors. Then, of course, the tourists, who are rich enough to jaunt all over the world, make a bad name for America. But from what I've seen and heard, Europe is arrogant, and so especially are the "bloody" British. I grew up seeing England as a true ally of our hearts and minds. But I hear all the pissing and moaning and I see the collective English people looking down their noses... Kiss off. Most of America has nothing to do with its government, insofar as we are powerless (beyond voting) to stop the idiocy. Don't get you started or we'll "regret it"? Bite me, hero. One thing Americans don't respond well to is threats.

What's real is that the common people of almost every country of the world, including the lightning rod that is the United States of America, are good people.

Oh, you're baaad. Ta very much for proving my point. For the record: Yes, I know the difference between government (and fictional characters) and people. No, I do not believe that it makes much difference in this case; the American government is merely the logical extension of many American's attitude. No, in fact some of the most pleasant Americans I've known have been tourists. Yes, I am well aware that we have our own fair share of arrogance, and that it's coming through right now. Yes, you will almost certainly regret it when the thread gets closed and warnings are issued all round for various offences. Yes, the majority of common people are if not good at least indifferent.

Point I'm making? Being proud of your nation is all very well and good. Being so proud of your nation that you attempt to take the credit for other peope's work or impose its ways upon the entire planet isn't.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

Very poor. The members of the hoses (representaive and senate) appear to be much more concerned for their own personal interests rather than those of the country. The executive has a lot to learn about how to deal with other countries.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

Average american is about the same as an average person of any other nationality in inteligence. In international awareness they fall behind the Europeans but in local affairs they are probably better informed.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

Apologize for my predecessor (GWB) as he really did not understand that other cultures do not necessarily want to be mini americas. After that try to rebuild the economy. (difficult now)

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

The UK, Canada and Australia. Due to language and culture. Canada is forced to be close dye to physical geography.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

The African states. They really have no link whatsoever to the USA, except through the history of slavery.

My two cents: The disconnect between American politics and the actual sentiment of the people is the greatest it has been in recent history.

And everyone is arrogant when it comes to blatant nationalism. So I believe that there are no winners here.

Good luck on your report!

1) I am no fan of it. I think it will be rated as one of the most corrupt administrations in our history. Time will tell.

2) There are pockets of intelligence just like there are pockets of ignorance. There are people that never leave their state let alone the country. As such knowledge tends to be more internal then worldly. I have visted many countries and they are all the same. You find people that are stupid, rude, pleasant, smart, dumb, ignorant.....

3) I wouldn't want the job. But somethings I would change. The global economy. If you want to setup shop offshore and export jobs then you don't deserve tax as much tax credits. Punish executive fraud and corruption. There is little difference between a store robber and an executive that defrauds millions. Golden parachettes. That would have to change. Many times I have seen exectives plunder and or wreck a company and "retire" with several million dollars. Health care for all. Place "reasonable" limits on lawsuits. Laws to change insurence policies on Doctors. Punish the quacks and reward the good ones. High Premiums should be used to clean out the bad doctors. Finally, the gas combustion engine. Time to find a new energy source for cars. I would like to see gas use significantly reduced.

4) Great Britain, Australia, Italy, Israel, Poland and Japan. I would also say Germany and France when push comes to shove.

5) Arab countries.

1. I do believe agresive military politics and mass-media control ranks the american government lower than most making it a form of oligarchy close to dictatorship
2 It dependes on the zone ofcourse. metropolitan zones probably score higher. An average american gets a 3 on a 10 scale.
3.lock away the old president/spend some money on reabilitating the image of america thru out the world/spending A LOT of money on education

Really? Well, I guess I must just be seeing the bad bits of Americans then. From where I stand, the attitude of the US gov't vis-a-vis foreign affairs ("we are the best, and if you don't like it you can go screw") seems remarkably similar to that of many Americans. Ah well, I suppose I could only get a really accurate impression by living there.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

The present government is incredibly dangerous and out of it's freaking mind. It is war mongering, homophobic and self-righteous

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

Depends which state you're in, but I'd say around 90 ish (IQ that is) all round.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

Well seeing as Iraq is buggered up completely, I'd have to stay there. So I'd guess I'd make a change to the clear skies intiative right away, in favour of actual clear skies.

[B]4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

England and Australia.[B/]

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

[B]Depends what you mean by link. I suppose North Korea would be the obvious choice but if you mean it on a smaller scale, I'd say France.[B/]

How do you figure that? sure the UK and Austrailia are our allies but all of our manufacturing industries are outsourced to China, not to mention their currency is tied to ours, and we buy all of their shit.

And isnt the US in pretty heated political negotiations with NK? Sure it isnt a good link but it is a strong link.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

It is a plutocracy... it sucks. I'm glad I don't have it here, although ours comes close in suckiness.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

Not very smart. Most Americans, from what I can see, are ignorant of the world and have weird ideas of morality (i.e. banning gay marriage). Many Americans seem to be stuck in the middle ages in their thinking. This inevitably makes many of them quite bigotted and hypocritical. Almost all of them have since childhood been brainwashed into believing their country is the best thing that could happen to the planet. A grave mistake, but due to their national pride and ignorance of the rest of the world, quite understandable. It's a dangerous development though, especially considering that the US has a large military and great economic power in the world, which could be abused for the wrong goals.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

I'd withdraw all US soldiers/bases from foreign soil and deal with my own countries' problems instead of messing up the globe. I'd also end support for Israel since these warmongerers don't deserve America's help.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

Israel - unfortunately. Oh and... never forget Poland *smirk* Saudi Arabia too due to the oil. Canada due to being neighboring nation, Italy due to having a similar plutocratic government (Berlusconi is a slimy weasel), some Asian countries too (i.e. South Korea) and all other countries that rely on US financial "aid".

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

China. It'll eventually surpass the US in importance. I hope they never make friends with the US. I'd prefer them to be a counterbalance to US dominance in the world. The EU is slowly moving to independence aswell and is no longer bowing before Washington's throne.

Americans are anti British. All they can do is speak the usual, anti British rubbish that has been spewing forth from yankee mouths since the American War of Independence and it only reinforces my opinion that America, Americans and American culture are fundamentally anti British. Before I do begin I would like to make it clear that I am British and a full member of the Conservative Party. That should stop any attempts to call me a socialist leftie. I have many examples to back this theory up so let us begin:

American Betrayal: Yes I know it happened in 1786 but in my opinion it is still relevant to today. This so-called war against tyranny (ha!) began over a tiny amount of tax on tea. Americans already lived in a virtually tax free zone, far more tax-free than Motherland Britain. And why did we place this tax on tea? So that we could pay for defences around the American colonies! Their so-called "War of Liberty" on us was little more than a scam. The rich Americans, unhappy at this tiny bit of tax eating away at their already massive profits, roused the rabble using their false words. Replace "liberty" with "greed" and "freedom" with "slavery" and I think you have the gist of the American War of Independence. In films like the Patriot, the British are accused of massive war crimes. I can tell you now as a historian that the only war crimes during that entire war were inflicted by American rebels on loyal British citizens. As to an entire nation being united against Britain? Ha. One of third of all Americans were loyalist and they were forced to flee by the vindictive rebels after the war finished. The American War of Independence was not about liberty for all: it was about liberty for the fat, slave owning plantation owners and that is still the way that America runs today. My main point here is from the birth of their nation, the Americans have been fundamentally anti British. They stabbed their own motherland in the back and drove the knife in deep. For that they should NEVER be forgiven. The American nation is a nation of traitors. They murdered British soldiers and are therefore murders. They have British blood on their hands. This war set out the fundamental beliefs of America. Self-interest is their fundamental belief and self-interest has never been high on the British agenda.

World War Two: The American version of this war is like so: Europeans doomed to tyranny and oppression forever, heroic American GIs save the hopeless Europeans, hooray war ends. This can be seen in any number of their history books and their films (like Saving Private Ryan for example). That story is a lie. The reason America came into the war wasn't to preserve liberty and freedom, far from it. They were happy enough to let Europe go to hell so long as THEY weren’t attacked. The only reason they came into World War Two was to protect their own backsides when the Japanese attacked them at Pearl Harbour. Not at all like the British who entered to defend Polish liberties and the peace of Europe. Britain never had to go to war: it is doubtful that Hitler would have attacked us due to his deep respect for Britain and its Empire. Britain could have pulled out of he war at any time: the Germans were constantly offering us favourable terms of peace that would allow us to preserve most of our Empire. But no! Britain kept on fighting for what it believed in. We didn't fight out of self-interest: our self-interest was with peace. That shows the fundamental difference between Americans and British. Britain fight for principles, Americans fight for themselves. When they finally entered the war, a great deal of work was already done. Montgomery had won at Alamein in North Africa. The Battle of Britain was won. The Russians were beginning to push the Nazis back. The Americans did provide a large number of troops for D-Day that’s true but remember that 2 out of 5 beaches were British beaches and 1 of the others was a mixed Canadian/British force. But do they get a mention in any of their Hollywood propaganda? NO. Were we to believe Private Ryan then we would believe that America won World War Two all by itself. Finally, America showed absolutely no interest in helping Europe even once it was in the war. During the last two years, it was of absolute importance to secure as much of Europe from the Communist powers to the east. Churchill (a man with 44 years experience in the European political scene) told the Americans that they had to capture many parts of Europe in order to prevent Communist tyranny. He was ignored by the arrogant Americans and so all of Central Europe was sacrificed just so the Americans could run off back home. Central Europe would spend the next 60 years under the tyrannical rule of Communism thanks to America. Had they listened to Churchill, then most of Germany would have been saved. In their own selfish rush, the Americans created the most dangerous political situation for 40 years, as Soviet Russia had the run of nearly all of Europe. One last final point here: Americans still claim that they won the war all by themselves. To claim this is to spit on every British, French, Canadian, Polish and Russian wargrave.

The British Empire: One point to start my ranting: the American Revolution was not "the funeral toll of the British Empire" as so many Yank historians believe. The British Empire went on for over 150 years after the American Revolution so I would hardly call it a funeral. The British Empire (contrary to Yank propaganda) was actually the most liberal empire ever seen on the face of the earth (and I consider it far more liberal than the American Empire currently in creation). Slavery was non existent within the British Empire by 1850, having first been banned in 1806. Members of the colonies were not surpressed by the British Army as the British Army was too small to enact such a large-scale act of oppression. With British technology and British money and British expertise, once backward nations were turned into industrial powerhouses. In the space of a century, India turned from a squabbling bunch of princedoms into a united, advanced and well-governed country with an intact education system, transport system, industrial infrastructure and civil service, all of which were set up by the British Empire. India today is a super power thanks to the legacy left to them by the British. And all being said done it was better that the British (a liberal democracy) gained control of these places than the Japanese, Germans or Italians. But America saw this Empire as a threat and so took the first opportunity offered to it to destroy it. Using its global power status, it forced Britain out of the Empire, leaving the good work unfinished. The Americans forced the British out in such a rush that the British had to come up with implausible and unworkable plans for their departure. Once again America had acted out of self-interest in the disguise of liberty.

American Cultural Invasion: Let me tell America what we don't want. We don't want you horrible, greasy fat food chains clogging our streets. We don't want your cheap, Hollywood propaganda films. We don't want your immoral television. We don't want a system of self-interest in place of British social capitalism (a balance between socialism and capitalism, essentially a liberal state). In short we want our own cultures, free from American influence. The British Empire never went out to destroy cultures. In India, Christian missionaries were banned by the British and the Indian culture was allowed to remain and flourish. Why have not the Welsh, Scottish or Irish cultures not disappeared? Because Britain is a tolerant nation. America is now using its super power status to invade our shores: not with troops but with their tainted and corrupt culture. To the people of Britain: say arse instead of ass, ensure you use the British pronunciation of words. If you don't then you may as well kiss the stars and stripes and call President Bush your leader. America only seeks to destroy native cultures and replace them with its own, filled with MacDonalds and episodes of Friends.

Well I would advise all to read this before the admin ban it. Free speech, my arse. Just remember that American culture is based on self-interest. I do not like Europe but at least the French and Germans have honour. I would rather ally myself with Europe than with dishonest, selfish, corrupt, unprincipled, hateful, dishonourable, treacherous America.

By the way, I prefer British English, since as a German, I can easier understand it, due to superior pronounciation :D

1. ) It has consistently managed to lose the trust of both the international scene and the moderate part of its own population. That it has, through fraud, smear campaigns or the incompetence of the campaign of their opposition, been able to secure its victory for a second term, is a marvel.

2.) Intelligence can hardly be measured. However, I have observed that a great portion of Americans, especially on the more extreme right, are either ignorant or apathetic concerning any issues outside America. This necessarily causes a skewed perspective of their nation's importance, in turn promoting further ignorance and/or arrogance.

3.) In this situation? Hard to say. I would not wish that office on my worst enemy right now.

I would definitely change the policy on religion and education, cutting the funding for so-called "abstinence only" programs that actually promote teen pregnancy through deliberate misinformation; I would try to do something about the present threat against civil rights caused by the fundamentalist agenda.
Regarding Iraq, it's a quagmire and we all know it. On top of that, now that the elections are through (and according to Scott Ritter, "cooked", by the United States), there is little that can be done about the new theocratic government beginning to rear its head. Heaven help the president who has to deal with that and take responsibility. We need to get out, and get out soon; but we also need to keep a watch on human rights and a secular government in that country.
Iran: Difficult as well. Certainly, any plans of imminent attack, should they exist, would be put on ice indefinitely. Iraq has taught us that a regime change through military intervention is like repairing a wristwatch with a sledgehammer. Regarding their nuclear plans: Repair that issue at the root; rein in Israel and curtail military aid. While Israel is making threatening moves toward Iran, who can blame them for feverishly trying to get nukes?

4.) Britain and Australia. Their practically shoved up Bush's... ah well. Interestingly, both countries' citizens are largely against this stance of their government. So their bond with America might only last until the next election in each of their nations.
Edit: Oh yes, I forgot Israel. Mainly because here it's Bush that has his head up Sharon's, not the other way around. The current imbalance of power caused by the US pumping as much money into Israel's military as would suffice to feed the entire Middle East for many years is causing atrocities and human rights violations to no end.

5.) Many to choose from. Neither France, Germany nor Canada much appreciate the constant condescension and hostility toward them, both diplomatically phrased by the US government, and openly expressed in by the extremist Right. I can't judge which of them are most openly hostile to America at this point.
Edit: Forgot all the countries they have invaded or genuinely threatened, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Palestine... can't list them all.

Against the will of the population. And it seems to me, "alliance" means to the US "servitude". There is a deep misconception in US politics, what allies are supposed to do when the US embarks on one of their illegal adventures in the world.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

The current one? Nationalistic. Outrageously religious (I am not an atheist myself, but I believe religion has nothing to do in the public sphere). Imperialistic. Interventionist. Far on the right. Could possibly evolve to a fascist dictatorship, if for example another terrorist attack survened (which is statistically very possible).

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

It depends on what you call smart. They probably have a normal average IQ(though I sometimes wonder) but they are dramatically ignorant of what is happening worldwide and they lack curiosity for it too. They lack open-mindedness (firmly convinced their way of life is good to be inforced on everyone). That I wouldn't call smart.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

The very first? Abolish death penalty (argh - can the president do that?... not sure at all; anyway I'd take steps for it)

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

Israel first. UK (without acrimony: I love UK, it's a great country, I just think they'd be better off as 51st state than as EU member)

3. That would depend when I started my Presidency and what was going on at the time... if it was today or tomorrow... 5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

Why has nearly everyone taken weakest to mean strong and negative. I see NK, Iraq, France etc coming up all the time. These countries have very strong political links with the USA, just very negative ones.

Weak links are where one country does not affect the other. I saw one post (swimmingpool I think) that said Moldova and Mauritus or something like that. These have weak links. Iraq and NK do not.

I do not know how the OP intended this question to be interpreted, but what he asked is something different to what most people appear to have answered.

In the times of the best administrations, the best in the world. In the times of vile "administrations" like the one we have now, pretty horrible for a western country.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

For humanity on average, considerably intelligent. For the developed world, and considering the potential, not nearly as intelligent as they should be.

3) Give the Iraqi government enough money to stabilize, then pull out. Stop egging on Iran and North Korea. Completely redo the education system. Provide limited basic universal health care. Make the country more isolationist.

Glad to help.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

Currently the Congress is enslaved by special interests and the "politically expediant" way of doing things. Bush is simply pitiful.

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

Most Americans are very ignorant of the issues. They may know the most recent gossip about a politicians private life, but cannot explain, even in vague terms, Democratic or Republican plans for the economy, healthcare, international affairs, etc. What's worse is an attitude of "ignorance is cool" among teens. Granted this is attitude is waning somewhat since the invasion of Iraq, but the info being taught in schools are not producing citizens who care. Civics isn't required in many schools. I'm a senior at a rural high school. My school doesn't offer civics, government, or economics. The lack of knowledge among the public in the traditional "pocket-book" issues mean that Repubicans can use socially conservative issues and religion to gain votes. In short, people understand religion; they don't understand other issues well in the least.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

If I were President, I would have two "pet projects": advancement of technology and the budget deficit.

We've seen through history that technology will make or break a nation. It is, in many cases, the element that improves the standard of living the most in a culture. Technology obviously is a tremendous economic engine, and should be advancement should be promoted by any method possible by the government (tax breaks, funding, NASA, military research, establishing common standards).

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

The United States is considerably different from most other countries. I think Great Britian is the most similar, and, as a result, has the strongest bond with the America in a cultural sense. In an economic sense, our bond with China is unrivaled.

We also have a considerably bond with many South American countries in that we greatly influence their economies.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

Among the average people in America, France is currently despised for petty reasons, so their political link is, perhaps, diminished by this. Between governments, I think the link between the American government and Russian government is increasingly becoming strained.

This is for school and my personal use, any responses would be very helpful.

It would be great for my research if you also included:

Gender = male
Country = U.S.
Age = 18
Religion = non-religious, atheist
Job = no job just a student, but will be majoring in political science next year.

1) What is your general impression of the United States Goverment?

It's a "one-and-half party" clique, controlled by the oil industry and the military-industrial complex. Is good at making people believe it's a democracy. (I will elaborate in another thread)

2) How smart do you perceive the average American to be?

It's not that Americans would be stupid, but they are taught to shut up and do what you're supposed to do. The extent to which they believe things like what's said on the FOX channel is unparallelled. In some countries, the government owns all TV channels and thus forces you to believe what they say. In America, they don't have to force. The average American could be smarter, and fortunately there are plenty of those above-average Americans who are.

3) If you were President of the United States, what would be the first thing you would do differently and why?

Drop that anti-science rhetoric. Bush cannot ban cloning and stem cell research, and he should know it. Why he keeps whining about it, can't know.

4) What countries do you think have the closest alliance or bond with the US?

In Europe: Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, and Berlusconi's Italy. I can't count Iceland, because that's an American protectorate, not an independent state. Elsewhere: Japan, at least.

5) What countries do you believe have the weakest political link with the United States?

Those governments which the Americans do not view as legitimate governments, of course, like the North Korean Communist tyranny, the theocracy of Iran and the tribal rule of Somalia.

1) Abusive, capatalist, pigs.
2) Smart, but there are countries with better schools.
3) Stop supporting religious groups, reaffirm the seperation of church and state, because we've become dogmatic and small minded.
4) England and Australia in terms of visibility, but China and Russia in economic terms.

1) Very short-term thinking. A different foreign policy wouldn't bring immediate results, but long-term improvement. And less profit for defense contractors and oil and car industry. So basically they think first about themselves and re-election and less about the future of the country.

2) They need to be told not to put pets into a microwave for drying or that freshly brewed coffee is hot.

3) Pull back all armed forces from foreign countries. Why? See under 1)
Instead bring in engineers to build housing, streets, schools, etc.

4) Dictatorships.

5) Free countries.

Americans are anti British. *SNIP*

Wow. Out of all the usual complaints; you have the most hateful and rather misguided view of history.

Americans are anglophiles at heart. Hell this country probably loved Princess Di more then GB.

I kind of really doubt you know this country and it's people at all.

I like the people of GB. Love going there every chance I get. My Granddad was one of the Poles that fought for you guys. He would have a few words for you after reading your "opinions"

Ahhh well have a pint and unclinch.....

1. Hate it, of course. Who doesn't? Well, aside from neo-cons who get stiffies just thinking the words 'Manifest Destiny'. However, the biggest problem with the US government right now is not the fact Bush is an idiot. On the contrary; Bush is very, very clever, and while his public speaking skills are those of a drunken eight year old with tourettes, his grasp on how to obtain global clout (or should I say MORE global clout) is tight indeed.

2. The average American is not dumb; the average American is ignorent. There are many smart Americans, but with popular media the way it is (Fox News and CNN, I'm talking about you) it's understandable why many Americans think the way they do. Lets face it; life as the average American can be described in one word: Busy. Most Americans don't have time to pick up and read a respectable newspaper, or watch (heaven forbid!) public television, so they rely on the medium that is fastest and easiest to understand. Unfortunately, that means Fox News and CNN are in the forefront.

3. First off; can you say dictatorship? Second; cut millitary funding by 4/5. Third; with the money saved from millitary cuts, invest in the development of clean, alternative forms of transportation, sell results to other countries, and then make the burning of fossil fuels illegal. Forth; pump money BACK into the millitary but force the development of non-leathal weapons that are MORE effective than their leathal bretherin. Fifth....all right, that's enough for now, you get the picture.

4. Isreal, Britain, South Korea, Canada (for those who scoff at my mentioning of Canada can check themselves, we share a boarder, share a multitude of international agreements with each other, and trade with each other more than any other two countries in the world).

5. Iran, Syria, pretty much every middle eastern country (I hesitate to mention N. Korea because they have been ignored by the US even as they told the world "Hey, we've got nukes! Nah, nah!")

And for the rest of the information...

Let people provide whatever answers to the poll they want. Don't start a flamewar here, please.

Wow? I never thought I would EVER hear you say don't start a flamewar?

Then again it's about judging the americans so I see why you say that.

Rusiennne: A couple questions, you might have considered is asking if they ever visited the US and or lived there. They would have more weight in views of Americans then the more "educated" types that have not.
