Martha Stewart has been released from prison. She still has to do a few months of house arrest.

Insider trading. It was a bullshit charge. If somebody comes to you with information that your stock will be worthless tomorrow, wouldn't you sell it off today? Anybody would.

I agree in general, but the Martha Stewart case was bullshit. She did what anybody else in her position would do.

Actually, her real crime was lying to the FBI about why she sold her stock. Information that she got before anyone else did which makes it insider trading. Insider trading is part of the reason why the market crashed in 1929.

If I'm not mistaken, the FBI never proved that she asked for the insider information. If your broker calls you with a tip that your stock is about to become worthless, what do you do? Take a big financial loss? No. You sell the stock.

She lied to them about where she got the information. She got from her broker who had insider information. Information not known to the public. If she had not lied to the FBI she probably would not have been charged.

that was a very very minute reason why the mrket crashed. the market crashed because of all the god faith pledges that the stockbrokers ahd made (deals with no collateral). When the market had a tiny hiccup, everyone pulled out. these people on good faith pledges just let the govt absorb te cost.

What the crash and the insider trading did was destroy trust that common people had a fair chance at making money in the market. Insider trading was common pratice with the "Traders" like Joe Kennedy, and that is why he was asked to oversee the Commision and help formulate the regulations that govern the market today. And that is why insider trading is a real problem that should not be taken lightly by anyone who has some or all of their retirement in the stock market, which is almost all of us.
